The universe is whispering to you. Are you listening?
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I am open to the signs and synchronicities that guide me on my path."
The 'Signs' card is an invitation to pay attention. It is a reminder that the universe is in constant communication with us, offering guidance, reassurance, and course correction. These signs are not always dramatic or obvious; they can be as subtle as a recurring number, a song on the radio, or a chance encounter. To recognize these signs is to engage in a conversation with the cosmos, to know that you are not alone, and that you are being guided every step of the way.
The psychologist Carl Jung coined the term 'synchronicity' to describe meaningful coincidences that have no apparent causal relationship, yet seem to be meaningfully related. Jung believed that these events were not random, but were manifestations of an underlying order, a 'unitive reality' that connects all things. From this perspective, signs are not just random occurrences; they are glimpses into the interconnectedness of all things. They are moments when the veil between the seen and the unseen becomes thin, and we are able to perceive the hidden threads that weave our lives together.
Jung's concept of synchronicity suggests that meaningful coincidences are not accidents, but are expressions of a deeper, unifying principle at work in the universe.
In many spiritual traditions, signs are seen as messages from the divine. In the Tao Te Ching, we are encouraged to observe the patterns of nature, to see the Tao in the changing of the seasons, the flowing of water, the emptiness of a vessel. These are all signs, pointers to the underlying reality. In the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna is given a divine vision of Krishna's universal form, a sign of his true nature. This is a dramatic example, but the principle is the same: the universe is constantly revealing itself to us, if only we have the eyes to see.
A friend of mine was at a crossroads in her life. She was unhappy in her job and was considering a major career change, but was terrified of the uncertainty. She asked for a sign, a clear indication of what she should do. The next day, she was walking in a park when she saw a feather on the ground. It was a bright blue jay feather. She picked it up and felt a sense of peace. Later that day, she was in a bookstore and a book fell off a shelf right in front of her. The title was 'The Artist's Way'. She opened it to a random page and her eyes fell on a sentence: 'Leap, and the net will appear.' She took these as her signs. She quit her job, enrolled in an art class, and is now a successful painter. The signs didn't make the decision for her, but they gave her the courage to trust her own inner knowing.
To embody the teaching of 'Signs' is to cultivate a state of open awareness. It is to walk through the world with a sense of curiosity and wonder. Start by setting an intention to be more aware of the signs around you. You can even ask for a sign, as my friend did. But then, you must let go of any attachment to how the sign will appear. Be open to the unexpected. Pay attention to synchronicities, to recurring themes, to the whispers of your intuition. Keep a journal of the signs you receive. Over time, you will begin to see the patterns, to understand the language of the universe. You will begin to trust the guidance that is always available to you.
When the 'Signs' card appears in a reading, it is a message to pay close attention to the world around you. The universe is trying to get your attention. You may be at a turning point in your life, and you are being offered guidance. This card is an encouragement to trust your intuition and to be open to the messages that are coming through. Look for the synchronicities, the meaningful coincidences. They are not random. They are signposts on your path. This card is a reminder that you are not alone. You are being guided, supported, and loved.
