The divine art of not taking yourself so damn seriously.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I am a divine child of the universe, and I am here to play.""
We live in a culture that takes itself very, very seriously. We are serious about our careers, we are serious about our relationships, we are serious about our spiritual paths. We have forgotten how to play. We have forgotten how to be silly. We have forgotten that laughter is a form of prayer, that joy is a form of worship, that silliness is a form of enlightenment.
But here's the thing: this relentless seriousness is actually killing our souls. It's creating a spiritual constipation where we're so focused on doing everything "right" that we've forgotten why we're here in the first place. We're here to experience joy. We're here to laugh until our bellies hurt. We're here to be ridiculously, unapologetically alive.
In many spiritual traditions, the fool is a revered figure. He is the one who is not bound by the rules of society, who is not afraid to be ridiculous, who is not afraid to be wrong. He is the one who reminds us that there is a wisdom that is beyond the grasp of the rational mind. He is the one who reminds us that the path to enlightenment is not a straight line, but a crooked and meandering path, full of laughter and surprises.
Think about it. Who has more access to truth: the person who's desperately trying to appear wise, or the child who points out that the emperor has no clothes? The fool sees what others miss because they're not invested in maintaining an image. They're free to tell the truth, no matter how absurd it sounds.
In Taoism, there is a deep appreciation for the absurd, for the paradoxical, for the nonsensical. The Tao itself is beyond logic, beyond reason. It can only be approached through a kind of holy foolishness, a willingness to let go of our need to understand everything. When we become too serious about our spiritual practice, we actually move further away from the Tao, not closer to it.
Lao Tzu himself said, "The sage is guided by what he feels and not by what he sees." What does your heart feel like when you're being silly? Light. Free. Connected. That's your soul's natural state, before we pile on all the should's and must's and have-to's.
Honestly, I've watched people transform their entire lives just by learning to laugh at themselves again. Know what I mean? There's something about silliness that breaks up the old patterns, the stuck energy, the places where we've become too rigid. It's like shaking a snow globe. Everything settles into a new pattern.
Here's what's interesting: you don't need permission to be silly. You just need to remember that it's okay. Start small. Sing in the shower louder than usual. Make faces at yourself in the mirror. Dance badly to music you love. Be ridiculous on purpose.
Look, I've been doing this work for three decades, and I can tell you that the people who heal the fastest are the ones who can laugh at their own drama. They're not taking their pain less seriously, they're just not taking themselves so seriously. Big difference, right?
Try this: next time you catch yourself being overly serious, ask yourself, "How would a child handle this?" Not in a naive way, but with that natural lightness children have. That curiosity. That willingness to play with possibilities instead of getting locked into one way of seeing things.
When the Silliness card appears in a reading, it is a sign that you are being called to lighten up. It may be a sign that you have become too serious, too rigid, too attached to your own ideas about how things should be. It can also be a sign that you are being called to a path of greater joy, of greater playfulness, of greater freedom.
Truth is, this card often shows up when we're stuck in our heads, overthinking everything to death. It's like the universe is saying, "Hey, remember me? I'm fun. Life is supposed to be an adventure, not a prison sentence." Are you with me?
Sometimes this card appears because you're about to breakthrough something big, and the breakthrough is going to come through joy, not struggle. Maybe you've been trying to solve a problem through sheer force of will, when what's really needed is a completely different approach. Something playful. Something unexpected.
If you're dealing with a difficult situation, Silliness is reminding you that laughter really is medicine. Not because your problems aren't real, but because joy changes your vibration. It shifts your perspective. It opens doors that seriousness keeps locked tight.
What would I do differently if I gave myself permission to be ridiculous?
Where in my life have I become too serious, and how is that serving or limiting me?
What brought me pure joy as a child, and how can I invite that energy back into my life now?
