The raw, untamed truth of your being is the only path home.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I am a direct expression of the universe, and I honor my truth in every moment.""
Authenticity isn’t a destination; it’s a moment-to-moment choice. It’s the fierce, unwavering commitment to showing up as you are, not as you think you should be. The world will constantly try to squeeze you into a mold, to make you palatable, predictable, and polite. But your soul craves the raw, untamed wilderness of your own being. To be authentic is to be a warrior for your own heart, to stand in the fire of your own truth even when it’s uncomfortable.
The Tao Te Ching speaks of the "uncarved block," the state of natural simplicity and potential before the world imposes its labels and expectations. Chapter 28 says, "Know the masculine, but keep to the feminine: and become a watershed to the world. If you become a watershed to the world, the eternal virtue will not desert you, and you will return to the state of an infant." This isn’t about gender; it’s about balancing the active, doing energy with the receptive, being energy. Authenticity is this return to our original nature, a state of being so completely ourselves that we become a source of life for others. It’s about shedding the layers of conditioning and social masks to reveal the pristine, uncarved block of our true self.
Advaita Vedanta cuts to the heart of the matter with its central teaching: you are not the doer. You are not your thoughts, your emotions, or your body. You are Brahman, the one, indivisible consciousness that pervades all of existence. The search for authenticity, from this perspective, is the process of de-identification. It’s about recognizing all the ways you’ve mistaken the mask for the real you. When you know yourself as the unchanging awareness in which all experiences arise and subside, the need to perform, pretend, or please falls away. You are already whole and complete. Authenticity is simply resting in that knowing.
"The truth is not something to be achieved. It is something to be realized." - Nisargadatta Maharaj
I once worked with a client, a successful lawyer, who was miserable. He had the perfect life on paper: the high-powered job, the beautiful family, the big house. But he was dying inside. He had spent his entire life chasing his father’s approval, becoming the man he thought he was supposed to be. The "Authentic" card came up in a reading, and it hit him like a ton of bricks. He realized he had never once asked himself what he truly wanted. He had been living a life that wasn’t his own. The journey back to himself was messy and difficult. He ended up leaving his job, selling his house, and moving to the country to become a carpenter. His family was shocked, his friends thought he was crazy, but for the first time in his life, he felt alive. He had chosen the terrifying, exhilarating path of authenticity.
Embodying authenticity begins with radical self-honesty. Take a fearless inventory of your life. Where are you wearing a mask? Where are you compromising your truth to please others or to fit in? Start with small, daily acts of courage. Speak your mind, even when your voice shakes. Say no when you mean no. Wear what makes you feel alive, not what’s in fashion. Spend time in nature, away from the noise of the world, and listen to the quiet whispers of your own heart. This is not about being reckless or selfish; it’s about honoring the sacred contract you have with your own soul. It’s about choosing, in every moment, to be a living expression of the truth that you are.
When the "Authentic" card appears in a reading, it is a powerful call to arms. The universe is asking you to stop hiding, to stop playing small, and to step into the full, glorious, messy truth of who you are. It may be a sign that you are at a crossroads, a point where you must choose between the well-worn path of conformity and the untrodden path of your own heart. This card is an invitation to shed the skin of the past, to release the need for approval, and to embrace the wild, untamed beauty of your own soul. It is a promise that on the other side of fear lies a freedom you have only dreamed of.
In what areas of my life am I wearing a mask? What would it feel like to take it off?
If I were to live a life that was 100% authentic, what would I change?
What is the wildest, most untamed part of myself that I have been hiding from the world?
