The sacred bow of the soul to the divinity in all things.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I bow in reverence to the sacred mystery expressing itself as my life.""
Here's the thing about reverence... it's not some fancy spiritual concept you put on like Sunday clothes. It's the most natural response when you really see what's happening around you every single moment. I'm talking about that jaw-dropping recognition that absolutely everything is alive with the same consciousness that's reading these words right now.
Albert Schweitzer got it. He called it "reverence for life," and honestly, the guy was onto something massive. He wasn't just talking about being nice to puppies and trees (though that's part of it). He was pointing to this radical recognition that the same life force animating your heartbeat is the same one moving through the spider in your bathroom, the bacteria in your gut, the stars wheeling overhead. Wild, right?
But here's what's interesting... most of us walk around half-asleep to this miracle. We're so caught up in our mental stories about what matters and what doesn't that we miss the sacred showing up as ordinary Tuesday afternoon light streaming through dirty windows. We miss the reverence-worthy moment of our lungs automatically drawing breath while we worry about tomorrow's meeting.
The Advaita tradition points to something even more mind-bending. They say this reverence isn't something you DO... it's something you ARE. When the illusion of separation drops away, even for a moment, reverence becomes as natural as breathing. Because how could you not bow to yourself showing up as ten thousand different forms? How could you not feel awe at your own consciousness dancing as both the observer and the observed?
Truth is, reverence is radical respect taken to its logical conclusion. It's recognizing that every single thing... and I mean EVERY thing... is a sacred expression of the same source. The homeless guy on the corner? Sacred. The politician you can't stand? Sacred. Your annoying coworker? Sacred. Your own messy, imperfect, gloriously human self? Absolutely sacred.
Look, I've been doing this work for thirty years, and I can tell you that reverence isn't some lofty spiritual achievement. It's the ground you're already standing on. It's just that most of us have forgotten how to see it. We've trained ourselves to categorize and judge instead of simply witnessing the mystery that's constantly unfolding.
When you start living from reverence, everything shifts. Your morning coffee becomes a communion. Your difficult relationships become opportunities to practice seeing the sacred in disguise. Your own struggles become doorways to deeper compassion. Because here's the secret... reverence isn't about perfection. It's about presence. It's about showing up with your whole heart to what IS, without needing it to be different.
Think about that moment when you've stood in front of something so beautiful it stopped your thoughts. Maybe it was a sunset, or your child sleeping, or music that moved through you like liquid light. That stopping... that wordless recognition... that's reverence. And it's available every single moment if you're willing to slow down enough to receive it.
The practice isn't complicated. Start with your breath. Right now. Feel the miracle of air flowing in and out without any effort from you. Feel reverence for that. Then expand it... to your body, to the space around you, to the people you love, to the people who challenge you, to the whole wild, sacred mess of existence. Are you with me?
Start your day by placing your hands on your heart and feeling your heartbeat for sixty seconds. Not thinking about it... feeling it. Let yourself be amazed that this incredible muscle has been working tirelessly since before you were born. Say thank you. Out loud if you can.
Throughout your day, practice the "sacred pause." When you notice you're rushing or stressed, stop for three breaths and find one thing around you that deserves reverence. The way light falls across your desk. The fact that your phone connects you instantly to people thousands of miles away. The incredible complexity of the simple pen in your hand.
Before meals, take a moment to acknowledge the journey your food took to reach you. The soil, the rain, the hands that planted and harvested, the web of life that made this nourishment possible. You don't need elaborate rituals... just genuine recognition.
Practice "difficult person reverence." When someone triggers you, try to see past their behavior to the sacred being underneath. They're dealing with their own pain, their own fears, their own journey. Can you find even a tiny spark of reverence for their struggle? This one's advanced level stuff, but it'll transform your relationships.
When Reverence appears, you're being called to slow down and remember what's sacred. You might be caught up in the rush of daily life, treating everything (including yourself) as just another item on your to-do list. This card is a gentle reminder that you're surrounded by miracles masquerading as ordinary moments.
Pay attention to where you've been taking things for granted. Your health, your relationships, your ability to think and feel and choose. These aren't small things... they're amazing gifts worthy of your awe. The card might also be pointing to a specific situation where you need to approach with more respect and wonder rather than judgment or impatience.
If you've been feeling disconnected or spiritually dry, Reverence suggests that the sacred hasn't gone anywhere... you've just forgotten how to see it. The invitation is to come back to beginner's mind, to let yourself be surprised by the mystery that's always been right in front of you. Sometimes the most deep spiritual practice is simply saying "wow" at the right moment. Know what I mean?
What in my life have I been taking for granted that actually deserves my awe?
When did I last feel genuine reverence, and what was that experience like in my body?
How might my relationships change if I truly saw the sacred in everyone I encounter?
