The greatest illusion is that you were ever born.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I trust the sacred intelligence of endings and welcome what wants to be born through me."
Here's the thing about death that nobody wants to talk about: it's happening right now. Not just the big D-word we're all avoiding, but the thousand little deaths that happen every moment. Every breath you take? The previous moment dies. Every thought that passes? Gone forever. Every version of yourself you were yesterday? Dead and buried.
I've been sitting with people for thirty years as they face all kinds of endings, and honestly, the most deep transformations come when we stop fighting the dying and start seeing it for what it really is: the universe's way of making space for something new. Think about that for a second. Nothing new can be born without something old making room.
In Advaita Vedanta, they talk about the ego needing to die before you can realize your true nature. Sounds scary, right? But here's what's wild: the ego isn't real to begin with. It's just a collection of thoughts, memories, and stories you've been telling yourself about who you are. When those stories start crumbling, it feels like you're dying because, well, the false you is dying. But what's left? What was always there underneath all that mental noise.
Chuang Tzu had this beautiful way of talking about death that completely flips the script. He'd say something like, 'How do I know that loving life is not a delusion? How do I know that in hating death I am not like a man who, having left home in his youth, has forgotten the way back?' Wild perspective, right? What if our entire relationship with endings is backwards?
Look, I get it. Loss hurts. Endings are brutal. I've held space for people losing everything they thought mattered, including myself when life stripped away every identity I was clinging to. But here's what I've learned through all those dark nights of the soul: death is the greatest teacher we have. Not because it's morbid or scary, but because it shows us what's actually real.
When you really face an ending, when you let something die completely instead of trying to resurrect it or drag it along, something incredible happens. You discover that what you thought was you... isn't. The real you, the aware presence that's been watching all this drama unfold, that's what remains. That's what was never born and can never die.
Truth is, we're practicing for the big death every single day. Every time you let go of a grudge, that's a death. Every time you release an old dream that's not serving you anymore, that's a death. Every time you stop defending some position or identity you've been carrying around, that's ego death in action. Are you with me?
The Taoists understood this perfectly. They saw death and birth as two sides of the same coin, part of the natural flow that keeps everything moving and changing. They didn't see it as tragedy, but as transformation. Like water flowing around a rock, always finding its way, always becoming something new.
But here's what's interesting: most of us spend our whole lives trying to avoid any kind of death, physical or psychological. We cling to relationships that are over, jobs that drain us, versions of ourselves that expired years ago. We become walking museums of who we used to be, afraid to let anything die because we think that's all we are.
Seriously though, what if instead of fearing death, we started seeing it as the ultimate act of trust? Trust that the universe knows what it's doing. Trust that something beautiful is trying to emerge through the ending. Trust that what's real in you can never be destroyed, only revealed more clearly when all the false stuff falls away.
When you really get this, death stops being the enemy and becomes your ally. It becomes the force that keeps you honest, that strips away everything that isn't essential, that shows you what actually matters. It's not the opposite of life. It's life's most intimate partner, the silence between notes that makes the music possible.
Want to work with death energy without waiting for life to force it on you? Start small and practice daily dying. Every night before sleep, consciously let the day die. Don't carry it into tomorrow. Let every conversation, every success, every failure just... end. Feel what that's like, that complete letting go.
Here's something I do that's changed everything for me: pick one identity or story about yourself that you've been carrying around, something that feels really solid and important. Maybe you're 'the responsible one' or 'the creative type' or 'the person who always struggles with money.' Now spend a day pretending that story isn't true. Just for one day, let that version of you die and see what emerges. Honestly, it's terrifying and liberating at the same time.
Try this meditation: sit quietly and imagine your thoughts as leaves falling from a tree. Don't try to stop them or change them, just watch each thought arise and then let it die naturally. Notice how you're still there, still aware, even as thought after thought passes away. That witnessing presence? That's what doesn't die.
And here's the daily practice that'll change your life: every time you catch yourself clinging to something, anything, just whisper 'let it die.' Clinging to how someone should behave? Let it die. Attached to a particular outcome? Let it die. Defending some old wound? Let it die. You're not giving up or being passive. You're making space for something new to be born through you.
When Death shows up in your reading, something in your life is ready to end, and honestly, it's about time. This isn't a warning, it's a invitation. The universe is saying, 'Hey, that thing you've been dragging along? It's served its purpose. Time to let it go.'
This card often appears when you're at a threshold, standing between who you used to be and who you're becoming. Maybe it's a relationship that's run its course, a job that's killing your spirit, or just an old way of seeing yourself that doesn't fit anymore. The death might be literal or metaphorical, but either way, it's sacred.
Don't fight this ending. Don't try to resuscitate what wants to die. Your job right now is to be present for the transformation, to trust that what's leaving is making space for something better. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is help something die with dignity instead of keeping it on life support.
This card is also about ego death, those moments when your sense of self gets completely reorganized. It might feel like you're losing your mind, but really you're just losing your limited ideas about who you are. What emerges from these deaths is always more authentic, more free, more aligned with your true nature. Trust the process, even when it's uncomfortable as hell.
