The Teaching

Look, I've been doing this work for three decades, and I can tell you this: true freedom isn't about changing your circumstances. It's about recognizing what you actually are underneath all the stories. Know what I mean?

Here's the thing about freedom that most people miss completely. We think we need to fix ourselves, heal every wound, resolve every trauma, clear every block. But that's like trying to clean the mud off water by stirring it more. The water was never actually muddy. The mud was just passing through.

In the Advaita tradition, they have this practice called 'neti neti' which literally means 'not this, not this.' It's the most radical form of self-inquiry you'll ever encounter. You systematically recognize what you are NOT. I am not my thoughts. I am not my emotions. I am not my body. I am not my history. I am not my traumas. I am not my achievements. I am not my relationships. I am not my roles.

But here's what's wild about this practice. Most people think it's depressing or nihilistic. They're like, 'Paul, if I'm not any of these things, then what am I?' And that's exactly the point. You can't think your way to what you are. You can only recognize what you're not, and what remains is what you've always been.

Truth is, every single thing you think defines you is actually just a temporary appearance in consciousness. Your personality? It's like weather patterns. Your emotional wounds? They're like clouds passing through the sky. Your deepest fears? They're like shadows that have no substance of their own.

I remember working with a client who'd been in therapy for twenty years trying to heal from childhood abuse. Twenty years! She knew every detail of her trauma, could analyze it from every angle, had processed it with every modality. But she was still suffering. Then we did some simple self-inquiry together. 'Who is aware of the pain?' I asked her. 'Who is aware of the story?' Within minutes, she started laughing. Not because the experiences weren't real, but because she suddenly saw that she was the awareness in which they appeared, not the experiences themselves.

This is what moksha actually means. It's not liberation FROM your life. It's liberation AS your life. You realize you were never actually bound by anything. All the chains were imaginary. All the prisons were made of thoughts.

Radical forgiveness becomes effortless from this recognition. You're not forgiving because you should, or because it's spiritual, or because someone told you to. You're forgiving because you clearly see that the one who was supposedly hurt never actually existed as a separate entity. There's only this one awareness appearing as all experiences, including the experience of being hurt and the experience of doing the hurting.

But here's what's interesting about freedom. It's not a future achievement. It's not something you attain through practice. It's what you are right now, in this very moment. The seeking itself is what seems to obscure it. It's like looking everywhere for your glasses while they're on your head.

The mind loves to make freedom complicated. It wants steps and stages and levels and attainments. But freedom is the simplest thing in the universe. It's simpler than breathing. You don't learn to be free. You simply stop believing you're bound.

This recognition changes everything and nothing. You still pay your bills, love your family, feel your feelings. But you know yourself as the space in which all of this appears. You're the movie screen, not the movie. You're the sky, not the weather. Are you with me?

The most liberating thing I can tell you is this: you don't need to become free. You already are free. You just need to stop believing the stories that say you're not.

How to Embody This Teaching

Here's how you embody this recognition: Start with the 'neti neti' practice. Right now, wherever you are, begin systematically noticing what you are not. Look at your hands and recognize: 'I am not these hands. I am what's aware of these hands.' Feel your heartbeat and know: 'I am not this heartbeat. I am what's aware of this heartbeat.'

When emotions arise, instead of immediately identifying with them, pause and ask: 'Who is aware of this anger? Who is aware of this sadness?' Don't try to answer with your mind. Just rest in the question and notice what's already here, already aware, already free.

Practice radical forgiveness not as a doing but as a seeing. When someone triggers you, ask yourself: 'Who is aware of feeling triggered? What is this person actually disturbing?' You'll discover that what you truly are can't be disturbed by anything.

Throughout your day, catch yourself believing limiting stories and simply recognize: 'This is not what I am. This is something appearing in what I am.' Don't fight the stories. Don't try to replace them with better stories. Just see them as temporary appearances in the vast space of your being.

The key is gentleness. This isn't about denying your human experience. It's about recognizing the unchanging awareness in which all experiences come and go. You're not trying to get rid of anything. You're simply recognizing what you already are beyond all temporary appearances.

When This Card Appears

When Freedom appears, it's time to stop looking for liberation in all the wrong places. You've been trying to free yourself by fixing your circumstances, healing your past, or changing your future. But true freedom isn't found in the content of your life. It's found in recognizing what you are beyond all content.

This card is calling you to question every assumption you have about who and what you are. You are not your story. You are not your wounds. You are not your achievements or failures. You are the awareness in which all these things appear. This recognition is available right now, not after years of healing or spiritual practice.

Freedom is also pointing toward radical forgiveness. Not the kind where you work really hard to forgive, but the kind where you see that the separate self who could be hurt never actually existed. There's nothing to forgive when you recognize there's only one consciousness appearing as all experiences.

If you've been feeling trapped by circumstances, relationships, or your own patterns, this card is a reminder that your true nature is already free. The prison exists only in thought. The moment you stop believing in your limitations, they lose their power over you. Seriously. Think about that.
