Say Yes!

Open the door with a yes, not a maybe or no.

By Paul Wagner

Affirmation

"Today, I choose to say yes to life’s flow, to my inner truth, and to the opportunities that call me forward."

The Teaching

Say yes. It sounds deceptively simple, but this card is a fierce call to commitment, not blind optimism or spiritual bypassing, but a grounded, real, and radical acceptance of what is calling you forward. Saying yes is the act of embracing life in its fullness, including the raw, gritty, and sometimes uncomfortable parts.

In the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu teaches us about the power of non-resistance and flowing with the Tao: "When there is no desire, all things are at peace." Saying yes is not about craving or forcing outcomes; it’s about aligning with the natural current of existence. It’s the willingness to open your hand, unclench your fist, and receive what the moment offers.

From the standpoint of Advaita Vedanta, saying yes is recognizing the self as the unchanging witness, saying yes to the play of forms and phenomena without attachment or aversion. It’s the courageous act of embracing your life’s circumstances while knowing, at the core, you are the eternal presence beyond them.

Paul often says, "Saying no is easy. It’s safe. Saying yes is where the real work begins."

The Bhagavad Gita encourages us to act without attachment to results, to say yes to our dharma, our sacred duty, even when the path is unclear or daunting. Arjuna’s crisis is a perfect example: the real transformation comes when he says yes to his role as a warrior, not in blind obedience, but as an act of conscious participation in the cosmic dance.

In practical terms, saying yes means showing up for yourself and your life, even when fear, doubt, or resistance arise. It’s saying yes to love when it’s messy; yes to your work when it’s exhausting; yes to your growth even when it hurts.

Here’s a real-life example: Imagine you’ve been offered a new job that scares the hell out of you. The comfortable voice inside whispers, "No, stay where you are." Saying yes here isn’t reckless enthusiasm; it’s a conscious decision to embrace uncertainty, to trust your capacity to adapt and grow. It’s the voice of your deeper self inviting you into expansion.

But beware: saying yes does not mean spiritual bypassing, ignoring pain or pretending everything is fine. The fierce tenderness of this card holds space for your real feelings and challenges. It is not about denial but about embracing reality as it is and committing to move forward anyway.

Saying yes is a practice of surrender, but not passivity. It’s an active engagement with life’s mystery, rooted in presence and courage. It’s the door to transformation and alchemy because it opens you to new possibilities you couldn’t see when you were stuck in resistance.

So say yes to yourself, to the moment, to the call of your heart. Say yes to the unknown, the vulnerable, and the sacred unfolding of your path.

How to Embody This Teaching

Begin today with the simple practice of saying yes. When a choice arises, big or small, pause and ask yourself: Can I say yes to this moment, to this opportunity, to this feeling? Notice where your instinct is to say no out of fear, habit, or comfort. Take a deep breath and explore what it would mean to say yes anyway.

Try this exercise: For one full day, commit to saying yes to all invitations, literal and metaphorical, that align with your values and well-being. This might be saying yes to a conversation you’d normally avoid, yes to a creative impulse, yes to rest when you usually push yourself too hard. Notice how your energy shifts when you practice openness and acceptance.

Remember to differentiate between saying yes from an empowered place versus a place of people-pleasing or denial. Saying yes is always an act of conscious choice, not compulsion.

At night, journal about your experiences. Where did saying yes open doors? Where did it feel risky or uncomfortable? What did you learn about your capacity to embrace life?

When This Card Appears

When the 'Say Yes!' card appears in your reading, it’s a direct invitation to embrace life more fully. It signals that the moment calls for your openness and willingness to engage, even if the path ahead is unclear or intimidating.

This card challenges you to move beyond hesitation, resistance, or self-doubt. It asks you to identify where you have been holding back and to consider the life-changing potential of saying yes, whether that’s to a new opportunity, a relationship, a feeling, or a deeper commitment to your own growth.

It’s a reminder that saying yes is not about ignoring your boundaries or wisdom but about cultivating a courageous, tender heart that can hold life’s contradictions without shutting down or shutting out.

Journaling Prompts

1

Where in my life have I been saying no out of fear or habit rather than true discernment? What might change if I said yes instead?

2

Recall a time when saying yes led to unexpected growth or opportunity. What did that experience teach me about openness and trust?

3

What does saying yes look like for me right now in my relationships, work, and spiritual practice? How can I embody this more fully?
