The art of opening to what life offers, without resistance or agenda.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"Today, I open my hands, my heart, and my being to receive fully and without fear."
To receive is often underestimated in spiritual circles. Everyone talks about giving, surrendering, serving, but receiving? That’s where most of us trip. Receiving is not passive. It’s an active, fierce practice of showing up and saying, “Yes, I am here, ready to welcome what is offered.”
Paul Wagner’s voice cuts through the airy spiritual bypassing that tells you to just "let it go" or "be open" without addressing the real blockages. Receiving demands that you get real with what you're resisting in yourself and the world.
“In the world, nothing is softer or weaker than water, but for attacking the solid and strong, nothing can surpass it.” (Tao Te Ching, Chapter 78)
Water receives everything, fills every crevice, and yet it holds power that breaks down mountains over time. To receive like water means to be yielding yet strong, open yet discerning. It’s not about swallowing everything blindly, but about allowing life’s offerings to enter your space, your body, your consciousness.
“You are the receiver and the received, the giver and the given.” (Advaita teaching)
Advaita Vedanta shows us that the separation between giver and receiver is an illusion. When you truly receive, you recognize the unity of all things. Receiving is not about becoming a victim or a passive sponge; it’s about acknowledging that you are part of the flow of existence, both the source and the sink. The ‘I’ that receives is the same ‘I’ that gives.
“Be steadfast in yoga, O Arjuna. Perform your duty and abandon all attachment to success or failure. Such evenness of mind is called yoga.” (Bhagavad Gita 2.48)
Receiving is not just about passively accepting outcomes, but about engaging fully in action and then opening to the results without clutching or rejecting. It’s the delicate dance of effort and surrender. You do your part and then receive what comes, whether praise, criticism, reward, or failure.
In everyday life, receiving can feel scary. Imagine you offer help or love, but when someone tries to give back, you shut down. This is not spiritual humility; this is a block. Receiving is radical because it demands vulnerability and trust, trust that you are worthy and that the universe is not out to get you.
Take the example of Sarah, a woman who has spent years taking care of everyone but refuses help. When a friend offers to cook for her during a tough time, she declines, thinking, “I need to do this on my own.” But by refusing, she isolates herself, cutting off the flow of support and love. Her resistance to receive keeps her stuck.
Receiving is the doorway to healing. It’s the moment you say, “I am enough to accept this gift.” It’s grounding and real, not some airy fairy concept.
Receiving isn’t about being a doormat. It’s about firm boundaries that say, “I will receive what serves my growth and well-being.” As Amma teaches, love is both tender and fierce. Receiving with fierce compassion means you don’t take everything offered blindly, but you also don’t reject what could nourish your soul because of fear, pride, or past wounds.
So, receive with discernment and courage. Receive your pain, your joy, your failures, your successes. Receive the help, the love, the lessons. Receiving is the other half of the alchemy of life that transforms what comes in into wisdom, strength, and freedom.
Start today by noticing what you resist receiving. It could be as simple as a compliment, an offer of help, or a difficult emotion like sadness or anger. When you catch yourself shutting down or deflecting, pause. Breathe deeply and soften your posture, relax your hands, unclench your jaw.
Practice saying silently or out loud, "I receive this." It might feel awkward or vulnerable, but lean into that discomfort. Receiving is muscle work, it gets stronger the more you practice.
Then, journal about what it feels like to receive. What emotions come up? What stories or beliefs resist receiving? Is it pride, fear, shame, or something else?
In your relationships, try to accept small gifts or acts of kindness without immediately trying to reciprocate or minimize them. Simply receive.
When the 'Receive' card appears, it’s a clear message to open yourself to what life is offering right now. This could be love, support, healing, or even hard lessons disguised as gifts. Your resistance, pride, or fear might be blocking the flow. This card calls you to soften your edges, loosen your grip, and say yes to the present moment with all its imperfections.
It’s a reminder that receiving is not weakness but strength. It’s the courage to be vulnerable and the willingness to be human. The universe meets you halfway, but you have to meet it with open hands.
Don’t wait for perfect conditions or for your ego to approve. Receive now. Receive fully.
What do I find hardest to receive in my life right now, and why?
How would my relationships change if I practiced receiving with openness and no agenda?
