“Wings unfurl where sorrow loosens its grip.”
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"Birds remind me: freedom is my birthright, not a distant dream. Today, I claim my wings, messy feathers and all, and soar through the realness of life. I am fierce, I am free, and I don’t need permission to sing my wild, untamed song. No more spiritual bypass, today I live in honest flight."
Birds. At first glance, they’re just winged creatures flitting about your world. But the moment you tune in more closely, birds become your uncompromising teachers in freedom, surrender, and presence. Let’s get real: birds don’t fake it. Whether they’re soaring 30,000 feet above the earth or nestled quietly on a branch, their entire existence is a live lesson in being exactly what they are, no apologies, no spiritual bypassing, no “ah, I’m just energy” nonsense. Birds matter because they make you face what freedom truly demands and what it means to be grounded even in flightlessness.
In the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu says,
“Be like the bird that, feeling the wind, does not try to control it but simply rides its currents.”That’s a subtle, fierce invitation. Birds don’t push the air around or wrestle the wind; they aren’t trying to escape gravity or claim dominion over the sky. They yield and attune. Every wingbeat is an act of surrender and power coexisting fiercely. For your spiritual life, this means dropping the mental control games and cultivating a trust in the natural currents of your own life’s energies. This isn’t airy-fairy trust, it’s the grounded trust that if you are aligned rightly, your life will carry you where you need to go, like birds migrating unpanic-stricken across continents.
Now, don’t romanticize this. Birds don’t meditate on the Tao, they do it. They are ruthless with inefficiency. Ever watch a gull wait for just the right thermals to catch or a hawk hover delicately to spot prey? Their freedom comes with fierce discipline, not just fluttering. This cuts through the New Age saccharine, spiritual freedom isn’t about “good vibes only” or floating without roots. Birds remind us freedom requires responsibility and presence.
The Bhagavad Gita offers a powerful complement: Krishna tells Arjuna,
“Perform your duty equipoised, abandoning all attachment to success or failure.”Birds don’t hesitate over success or failure, landing or falling. They act with full presence and abandon outcomes to a higher intelligence. They simply do what they were made to do, wings flapping rhythmically without attachment to praise or reproach. This echoes the bird’s teaching: ground yourself in your dharma, your authentic role, and release the need to control what comes from it.
Here’s a real-life glimpse: I once sat with a student, a gifted artist, who was terrified of flying. Her fear wasn’t just aerophobia; it represented her paralysis around risk, change, and freedom. She clung tightly to her routines, neighborhoods, even toxic relationships, all “landings” she thought she could control. One day, I took her birdwatching. We watched a flock of crows zigzag fiercely, fearless in a storm. That visceral encounter cracked something open. She realized freedom isn’t sitting still or running from fear; it’s engaging with life’s winds with full heart, flapping hard even if you’ve got to take a fall now and then. Birds don’t avoid storms; they work through them with raw engagement. Her breakthrough wasn’t about flying the plane, at least not yet, but about allowing herself to unfurl her wings inside.
Birds also teach from a radical Advaitic standpoint, non-dualism in motion. They don’t worry about self and other, subject and object. The sky, the earth, the bird, these are not fractured categories but moments of a seamless whole vibrating alive. In the *Ashtavakra Gita*, Advaita is expressed as freedom from the “I” that separates. Birds live this naturally. They don’t ask, “Where does the wing begin and where does the sky end?” Their flight is a direct experience of that undivided presence. When you watch a bird gliding effortlessly, you glimpse non-duality, life moving without friction or separation.
Let’s be clear: birds don’t “teach” only by example. They have attitudes, habits, and dynamics that should push your buttons and make you uncomfortable. Consider territorial aggression, mating rituals rooted deep in survival rather than romance, relentless calls slicing through silence. Birds are not serene spirits floating timelessly, they are raw life bursting into sacred form. If you think that seeing a bird or two means you’re now “connected” and om, further study is needed. Birds demand you honor life’s brutal edges alongside its grace.
In everyday terms, this means engaging your freedom not as a pie-in-the-sky concept but as a daily practice of waking up fiercely. Maybe you’re a caretaker always sacrificing your needs, clinging to “safety” at the cost of your wings. Birds call you to examine: What is the wind you’ve been ignoring? Are you willing to test your capacity for trust, to spread your wings despite doubts, failures, and messy life storms?
And if flying is impossible now, soul-crushed by loss, illness, or pain, birds still show you what grounded grace looks like. Not all birds migrate or soar. Some walk, some perch, some dive deep underwater. Their freedom is not in denying limits; it’s in becoming intimate with them without surrendering desire for life. Freedom doesn’t mean “no boundaries”, it means mastery within them.
When you draw the Birds card, hear this loud and clear: Your freedom is fierce and presence-demanding. It is not a privilege or a myth but a day-to-day commitment to face the wind, flap your wings, and let go of controlling the flight path. Be ruthless in shedding what anchors hold you back, but tender in honoring the limits you carry now. Look to the birds who have survived storms and still sing sharply at dawn. Their song isn’t always sweet, but it is real, and raw freedom sounds very much like that.
Alright, here’s the deal with Birds: they’re not just pretty winged things flapping around. Birds carry a message, sometimes they’re the freakin’ postal service of the universe, showing up to remind you that freedom isn’t about running away from your mess. Nope. Freedom is the fierce act of how you show up in your chaos, your beauty, your noise.
So here’s your grounded, no-BS practice:
Remember, birds don’t apologize for their songs. Neither do you. Freedom isn’t about perfection or silence; it’s your raw, unpolished voice breaking through the dense forest of your daily grind. So, flap your wings a bit today, even if just in your spirit. See where you can fly without the expectation to land perfectly.
“The sky is not the limit, it’s just the beginning.”
When This Card Appears:
Birds show up in your reading as a wild, no-nonsense wake-up call. They refuse to be pinned down or packaged into some neat spiritual cliché. This is a card of freedom, freedom to speak your truth, to rise above the noise, to see your life from a higher vantage point, even when the ground feels shaky beneath your feet. Birds remind you that your voice matters; whether it’s a whisper, a scream, or a song, it deserves to be heard. They bring a message of movement and flow but also of perspective, don’t get so caught in the minutiae that you lose sight of the bigger picture.
But listen closely, because this is not airy-fairy optimism. Birds fly into your life to challenge your complacency and push you out of comfort zones. They say, “Get off your ass and fly.” It’s time to loosen the grip on fear and old stories that clip your wings. Embrace the mess, the noise, the chaos, it’s all part of your unfolding freedom. So when Birds appear, get ready to soar with fierce tenderness, grounded courage, and an irreverent laugh at all the so-called ‘spiritual rules’ that want to keep you caged.
