Untangling the threads that bind your soul’s story
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I face my past with fierce compassion and unravel the knots that bind my freedom.""
Unwinding karma isn't about avoiding the mess of your life; it's about diving headfirst into the gritty, tangled yarn of past causes and effects you've spun across lifetimes. Every reaction you’ve resisted, every story you’ve held onto, solidifies into knots of karmic energy that no one else can untie but you. As the Tao Te Ching declares, "To let go is to be at peace; to hold fast breeds struggle." Unwinding karma demands the courage to loosen your grip on resentment, guilt, and outdated identity, not with denial or bypass, but with clear-eyed tenderness.
Karma, translated simply, means "action" or "deed," but it's not just what you do; it’s the energetic echo that cycles through the wheel of samsara, the repeated birth and rebirth of reactions and imprints. Advaita Vedanta teaches that your true Self is beyond these ripples of cause and effect, but until you recognize that, you remain bound in the web you yourself wove. Unwinding karma is the arduous process of distinguishing the self from the subtle chains of past habitual patterns, breaking the cycle with awareness instead of repression.
The Bhagavad Gita doesn’t sugarcoat this: Krishna tells Arjuna, "You have the right to work, but never to the fruit of work." Unwinding karma is accepting that you cannot always control the results, only your action. In this deliberate surrender lies freedom: by acting without attachment to outcome, you free the conditioned patterns from defining you. This card asks you to step out of the endless loop of cause and effect held in your unconscious and make conscious choices that uncoil the karmic spiral.
Consider a real-life scenario: someone haunted by a childhood betrayal carries the bitterness into every relationship, unconsciously recreating the original wound’s dynamics. Every time they lash out or withdraw, they reinforce the karmic loop. To unwind this karma means to face the sting without running, recognizing the old story while choosing a new response rooted in awareness, not reactivity. The moment they acknowledge their role in perpetuating the pain, the thread loosens, and the mix can begin to change.
This is not therapy-lite or spiritual platitudes. It’s fierce honesty with yourself, a willingness to feel the discomfort without evasion. As the Buddhist teaching of pratityasamutpada - dependent origination - says, nothing arises without conditions, and everything ceases when conditions change. Karma is exactly this: a self-perpetuating feedback loop. Unwinding it means changing the conditions, your perception, your actions, your presence, here and now.
Amma, with whom I studied for decades, embodied this principle: she didn’t gloss over pain to uplift people; she held suffering with radical acceptance, unconditional love, and relentless presence. Unwinding karma comes from that same place, a tenderness that doesn’t shrink and a courage that refuses to fake progress. It’s not about perfection but about willingness to look at your own shadow without flinching.
When you hold this card, listen to its raw message: the past is not a prison unless you agree to be captive. The energetic debts you owe yourself and others can be repaid with conscious action and self-awareness. This does not mean “fixing” the past; it means disentangling your present from the past’s gravitational pull. Every moment is an opportunity to choose differently, to unwind another knot, to free yourself a bit more.
Unwinding karma is a sacred action, one that requires grounded presence combined with spiritual insight. The Tao advises, "Act without expectation." When you stop fueling the wheel with desire, aversion, and ignorance, the cycle begins to dissipate. Your soul’s story is not a script shackling you but a raw manuscript you can rewrite moment by moment.
Start by holding witness to your habitual reactions, not as good or bad, but as the karmic echoes that they are. When a familiar pattern surfaces, pause. Take five conscious breaths. Ask yourself, "Am I reacting from freedom or the past's chains?" Resist the urge to justify or deny. Simply observe with fierce compassion.
Journal these moments immediately. Write down the emotional charge and the circumstances. Over time, patterns reveal themselves, not to shame you but to inform you where the knots lie. Then, introduce a conscious alternative. If anger repeats, try softening instead of hardening. If withdrawal is automatic, where can you open? These choices are your toolset for loosening karma’s grip.
Daily sit in quiet contemplation, recognizing the self not as your karmic story, but the eternal witness beyond it. Use the Advaita practice of self-inquiry: "Who is it that reacts?" This question, posed sincerely, can unravel identification with your conditioned self. Remember, it’s not a mental game, it’s a lived experience anchored in presence.
Embody humility along with courage. Accept that unwinding karma takes time; it’s the slow severing of unseen cords through consistent resolve. Ground your efforts with service, karma yoga shows us the power of selfless action to purify the mind and release the heart from its debts.
When Unwind Karma shows up in your reading, the universe is throwing down the gauntlet: it’s time to stop hiding from your past and the burdens you’re carrying. This card signals that old patterns are ripe for transformation, but only if you’re willing to face the uncomfortable truths. It’s a call to applied spirituality, not wishful thinking. You may be feeling stuck in cyclic behaviors, emotional patterns, or life circumstances that replay familiar dramas. Unwind Karma invites you to meet these with grounded awareness and intentional action.
This card can also suggest a moment of grace where karmic debts are being cleared, perhaps through forgiveness, confession, or self-acceptance. It highlights the power you have to reclaim your sovereignty by changing how you respond to your history. Beware the allure of spiritual bypass or quick fixes. Real unwinding demands commitment to the process, no matter the discomfort. If you resist, the cycle tightens; if you lean in, freedom beckons.
What recurring patterns or reactions feel like they’re rooted in my past? How have they shaped my present?
Where in my life am I holding onto resentment, guilt, or old stories that no longer serve me? What would it take to loosen that grip?
How can I act today with awareness instead of reactivity to begin unraveling my karmic cycle?
