The Teaching

Look, here's something I've learned after thirty years of working with people: the most powerful healing happens when we get out of our own way. When we stop making it about us and start making it about love itself moving through us. That's what selfless service really is... it's not about being a doormat or sacrificing yourself. It's about becoming so transparent that divine love can work through you without your ego getting in the way.

I remember this session I had years ago with a woman who was absolutely burned out from helping everyone around her. She was exhausted, resentful, and felt like she was giving and giving with nothing left for herself. Sound familiar? Here's the thing though... she wasn't practicing true selfless service. She was practicing ego service. Know what I mean?

The difference is huge. When your ego is running the show, you're serving because you need to be needed. You're helping because it makes you feel important, or worthy, or because you can't stand the discomfort of saying no. That's not seva... that's just another form of attachment. And honestly? It's exhausting because you're constantly measuring whether you're getting the recognition, gratitude, or results you think you deserve.

But true selfless service? That's a whole different energy. It comes from this place of such deep connection to the divine that serving others becomes as natural as breathing. You're not doing it for them, and you're not doing it for you. You're doing it because love itself is moving through you, and how can you resist that? Are you with me?

The Bhagavad Gita talks about this beautifully through karma yoga... acting without attachment to the fruits of your action. Krishna tells Arjuna to do his duty, but surrender the results to the divine. Think about that for a minute. How much lighter would your service feel if you truly released attachment to the outcome?

Truth is, when we serve with attachment, we're actually creating more karma, not less. We're binding ourselves to the results through our expectations and desires. But when we serve selflessly... when we offer our actions as a prayer, as an expression of devotion... that's when magic happens. That's when our service becomes a spiritual practice that transforms us as much as it helps others.

The Buddhist concept of the Bodhisattva takes this even further. A Bodhisattva vows to serve all beings until everyone is free from suffering. But here's what's wild about that vow... it's not made from a place of burden or obligation. It comes from the recognition that there's no separation between self and other. When you serve others, you're serving yourself. When you heal others, you're healing yourself. When you free others, you're finding your own freedom.

Now, I'm not saying you should become a martyr or ignore your own needs. That's spiritual bypassing, and it doesn't serve anyone. Authentic selfless service includes taking care of yourself. How can an empty cup pour anything out? But there's this beautiful balance where you care for yourself not because you're special or separate, but because you're part of the whole that needs tending.

Honestly, some of my most deep spiritual experiences have come through service. When I'm completely present with someone during a reading, when I've set aside my own stuff and just become a clear channel for whatever wants to come through... that's when I feel most connected to the divine. That's when the real healing happens. Not because I'm such an amazing healer, but because I've gotten my personality out of the way long enough for love to do its work.

This is your dharma calling you home. Not to some grand gesture or perfect life of service, but to this moment. Right here. Where can you show up today without needing anything in return? Where can you let love move through you just because that's what love does?

How to Embody This Teaching

Here's how to start living this... and trust me, it's simpler than your mind wants to make it. Begin each day by offering your actions to something greater than yourself. I don't care what you call it... God, the universe, love, consciousness. Just make that offering: "Let my actions today serve the highest good." Feel that? Already you're shifting from ego-driven doing to divine-inspired being.

Practice what I call "invisible service." Do something helpful without anyone knowing it was you. Pick up that piece of trash, pay for someone's coffee anonymously, send an encouraging text to someone having a rough time. No credit, no recognition, no social media post about it. Just pure service for the joy of serving.

When you're helping someone, notice your internal dialogue. Are you keeping score? Expecting gratitude? Feeling resentful if they don't respond the way you hoped? That's your cue to pause and reconnect with your deeper motivation. Take a breath and ask: "How can I serve love here instead of serving my ego?"

Set boundaries with compassion. Real service includes saying no when that's what's needed. If you're exhausted, overwhelmed, or helping from obligation rather than inspiration, it's time to step back and fill your own cup first. Honestly, learning to receive is part of learning to serve authentically.

End each day by reflecting on moments when you felt most connected to something greater than yourself. Usually, these are the moments when you were serving in some way... even if it was just really listening to a friend or being fully present with your kids. That's what we're cultivating. That feeling of being a vessel for love.

When This Card Appears

When this card appears, it's time to examine your relationship with service. Are you giving from overflow or from emptiness? Are you attached to being the helper, the fixer, the one who has it all together? The universe is inviting you to serve from a deeper place... from connection rather than compulsion.

This might mean stepping into a larger role of service in your community or work. But more likely, it's asking you to transform how you're already serving. Same actions, different energy. Instead of helping because you should, help because love is moving through you. Instead of giving because people expect it, give because generosity is your nature.

If you've been feeling burned out or resentful about helping others, this card is definitely speaking to you. It's not asking you to stop serving... it's asking you to serve differently. Release your attachment to the outcome. Stop keeping score. Start seeing every act of service as a prayer, as a way of communing with the divine.

Sometimes this card shows up when you're being called to serve in a new way. Maybe it's time to use your gifts more broadly, to step into leadership, or to offer your skills in service of something meaningful. Trust that calling. When service comes from authentic inspiration rather than obligation, it feeds your soul instead of depleting it. This is your invitation to let love work through you in ways you've never imagined.
