The highest spiritual practice is to be of use.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I serve love by being love, offering my authentic gifts with joy and boundaries.""
Here's the thing about service: it's not about being a martyr or sacrificing yourself on the altar of everyone else's needs. That's not service. That's codependency dressed up in spiritual clothing. Know what I mean?
Real service is something way more beautiful. It's when you've found that sweet spot where your gifts meet the world's needs, and love is the fuel that keeps the engine running. I've seen this in my practice over and over again. People come to me burned out from "helping" everyone, and we have to untangle what true service actually looks like.
The Bhagavad Gita calls it karma yoga. The act of selfless action. But here's what's interesting: it's not selfless because you disappear. It's selfless because your ego isn't driving the bus anymore. Your authentic self is. Think about that.
I remember working with this woman, brilliant therapist, who was exhausted from her work. She thought service meant saying yes to everyone, working overtime, never setting boundaries. But that wasn't serving anyone, really. It was serving her need to be needed. Totally different energy.
True service flows from overflow, not emptiness. When you're connected to your purpose, when you're aligned with love, service doesn't drain you. It fills you up. Seriously. I've experienced this myself when I'm in session with someone and I can feel that I'm not the one doing the healing. I'm just the channel. Love is doing the work through me.
In Sikhism, they call this seva. Selfless service. But look closer at that word. Self-less doesn't mean no-self. It means less of the small, fearful, ego-driven self and more of the big, connected, love-sourced Self. Are you with me?
The beautiful thing about genuine service is that it's not about fixing people or saving the world. It's about being so full of love that it naturally spills over. Like a cup that's been filled to the brim. You're not trying to pour. You're just naturally overflowing.
And honestly? Sometimes the greatest service you can offer is your own healing. Your own growth. Your own alignment with love. Because when you're operating from that place, everything you touch is blessed. Your presence becomes the gift.
I've learned that service isn't always about grand gestures or changing the world. Sometimes it's holding space for someone's pain. Sometimes it's a kind word to the grocery store clerk. Sometimes it's choosing to respond with love instead of reactivity in a difficult conversation.
But here's what trips people up: they think service means being available 24/7, never saying no, always putting others first. That's not service. That's self-abandonment. And ironically, it doesn't serve anyone well because you're operating from depletion instead of fullness.
The key is to ask yourself: is this action coming from love or from fear? From alignment or from obligation? From overflow or from emptiness? Your body knows the difference. Your energy knows the difference. Trust that knowing.
When you're in true service, there's this quality of effortlessness. Not that the work isn't challenging, but that you're not fighting against yourself to do it. You're not sacrificing yourself. You're expressing yourself. You're being who you came here to be.
Truth is, the world needs your authentic gifts, not your martyrdom. It needs you showing up as the fullest, most loving version of yourself, offering what flows naturally from that place. That's when service becomes sacred.
Start each day by asking yourself this simple question: "How can I serve love today?" Not "How can I help everyone?" or "What should I sacrifice today?" But "How can I serve love?"
Notice the difference in how your body responds to each question. When you ask how to serve love, you'll probably feel expansion, possibility, maybe even excitement. When you think about sacrifice or endless helping, you might feel contraction or heaviness.
Here's a practice I use with my clients: Set boundaries as an act of service. Yeah, you heard that right. Saying no to what doesn't align actually serves everyone better because it preserves your energy for what does align. Try saying no to one thing this week that feels like obligation rather than invitation.
Pay attention to your energy levels throughout the day. When you're doing something that feels like true service, you should feel energized, not depleted. If you're consistently drained, that's information. That's your soul telling you something needs to shift.
Practice what I call "micro-service." These are tiny acts of love that don't require you to reorganize your whole life. Smile genuinely at a stranger. Send a loving text to someone who's been on your heart. Listen without trying to fix when someone shares with you.
And here's the big one: serve yourself with the same love you'd offer others. Take that bath. Say no to that draining commitment. Speak your truth with kindness. When you model self-love, you give others permission to do the same. That's service too.
When this card appears, it's time to examine your relationship with giving and serving. Are you operating from overflow or emptiness? From love or from obligation? The universe is asking you to step into authentic service, the kind that feels like coming home to yourself.
This might mean saying no to some things so you can say a bigger yes to what really matters. It might mean recognizing that your healing journey is itself a form of service. Or it could be calling you to offer your gifts more boldly to the world.
Look at where you might be giving from a place of people-pleasing or fear rather than genuine love. The card is asking you to release any martyrdom energy and step into joyful, aligned action instead.
If you've been feeling burned out from helping others, this is your invitation to refill your cup first. True service flows from fullness, not sacrifice. You're being reminded that you can't pour from an empty vessel.
This card often appears when you're ready to align your service with your authentic gifts and passions. It's time to stop trying to be everything to everyone and start being fully yourself for those you're meant to serve. Trust that your unique contribution is needed and valued.
