The Teaching

Here's the thing about true giving. It's not about what you can afford to lose. It's about recognizing that nothing was ever really yours to begin with. Wild, right? This whole idea that we "own" anything is just a story we tell ourselves.

I've been practicing Dāna for decades now, and honestly, it took me years to understand what the Buddha was really pointing toward. Dāna isn't just charity or writing checks to good causes. It's this radical shift in how you see yourself in relation to everything else. You stop being the one who has stuff and starts being the one through whom stuff flows. Are you with me?

Look, the Bhagavad Gita talks about action without attachment to results, and giving is the perfect practice for this. When you donate your time, money, skills, or even just your attention, with no strings attached? No expectation of thanks, recognition, or even results? That's when the magic happens. You're not depleting yourself. You're actually opening yourself up to receive more than you ever imagined possible.

But here's what's interesting about sacred giving. It's not just about the external stuff. Truth is, the most deep donations happen on levels most people never even consider. You can donate your worry. Seriously. Next time you catch yourself spinning in anxiety, try offering it up. "Take this worry, Universe. I don't need to carry it." You can donate your anger, your resentment, your need to be right. Think about that.

I remember this client who came to me completely broke, thinking she had nothing to give. But when we looked deeper, we discovered she had this incredible gift for listening. Like, really listening. Not waiting for her turn to talk, but actually holding space for people. She started volunteering at a crisis hotline, and within six months, opportunities started flowing into her life in ways that amazed both of us. The Universe loves a generous heart, know what I mean?

The ancient traditions understood something we've forgotten: generosity creates abundance, not scarcity. When you operate from a place of "there's not enough," you create more not-enough. But when you give from a place of "there's always enough to share," you align yourself with the infinite creative force that's constantly generating everything we need.

Here's what I've learned in 30 years of practice: the fear of giving is really the fear of not being taken care of. But the moment you start taking care of others, the Universe starts taking care of you in ways you never expected. It's like this cosmic law that most people never test because they're too scared. But when you do test it? When you actually start giving freely? Life becomes this incredible dance of giving and receiving that never stops flowing.

And look, I'm not talking about giving until you're depleted. That's not sacred action, that's codependency. Real Dāna comes from overflow, not emptiness. You fill your own cup first, then let the excess spill over naturally. It's joyful. It's effortless. It feels like the most natural thing in the world because it is.

How to Embody This Teaching

Start small and start now. Right? Today, look for three opportunities to practice sacred giving. Maybe it's letting someone merge in traffic without that little flash of annoyance. Maybe it's really listening when your partner talks instead of planning your response. Maybe it's dropping a five in the tip jar when nobody's watching.

But here's the key: pay attention to what happens inside you when you give. Notice if you're keeping score, expecting something back, or feeling resentful. That's information, not judgment. The practice is to give anyway, but with awareness of those patterns.

Try this experiment for one week. Every morning, set an intention to give something away. Not necessarily money, but something. Your smile to a stranger. Your full presence to your kids. Your expertise to someone who needs it. Five minutes of your time to call someone who's lonely. Watch what happens to your sense of abundance. Watch what starts flowing back to you, often from completely unexpected directions.

And here's something most people miss: donate your resistance too. When life presents you with something you don't want, try offering that resistance up instead of fighting it. "I donate this frustration. I donate this fear. I donate this need to control." See how that shifts your whole relationship to whatever's happening. Seriously.

When This Card Appears

When this card shows up, the Universe is asking you to open your hands and your heart. Something wants to flow through you, and you're being called to be a clear channel for that flow. This isn't about depleting yourself or giving until it hurts. It's about recognizing that you're part of this incredible web of abundance that's always circulating.

Maybe you've been holding too tightly to something you need to release. Maybe you've been focused so much on getting that you've forgotten the joy of giving. Or maybe you've been operating from scarcity when abundance is right there waiting for you to notice it.

This card often appears when it's time to trust the flow. That project you've been hoarding? Share it. That skill you've been keeping to yourself? Offer it. That love you've been rationing? Give it freely. The Universe is ready to surprise you with what comes back, but you have to let go first. Truth is, whatever you're meant to receive is already on its way. Your job is just to keep your hands open so you can catch it when it arrives.

Journaling Prompts

What am I holding too tightly that wants to be shared or released?

2

Where in my life am I operating from scarcity instead of abundance?
