The truth is not hidden, you are.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I stop searching and start seeing. The greatest secret is the one I am already living.""
You want to know what's funny? The biggest spiritual secret isn't hidden at all. It's right here, right now, staring you in the face. But here's the thing... we're so busy looking for it somewhere else that we miss it completely. Know what I mean?
I've spent thirty years in this work, and I can't tell you how many people have come to me searching for the secret. The secret teaching. The secret practice. The secret door. And honestly? They're looking everywhere except the one place it actually exists: in this moment, as this moment, being this moment.
The Tao Te Ching puts it beautifully: "The way that can be spoken is not the eternal Way." But here's what's interesting... it's not because it's hidden. It's because it's so obvious, so immediate, so present that language can't quite capture it. It's like trying to bite your own teeth or see your own eyes without a mirror.
Advaita Vedanta calls this the "open secret." Open because it's never been concealed. Secret because somehow we keep missing it. We keep thinking enlightenment is something we need to achieve, some state we need to reach, some knowledge we need to acquire. But look... what's already here? What's reading these words? What's been aware through every single experience of your life?
That's it. That's the secret. You are it.
But the mind loves complexity, doesn't it? It wants seven steps and ancient techniques and years of preparation. Truth is, the secret is so simple that the mind dismisses it as too basic, too ordinary. "That can't be it," the mind says. "It has to be more complicated than that." Are you with me?
I remember working with a client who'd been seeking for twenty years. Meditation retreats, guru after guru, practice after practice. One day, exhausted from all the searching, she just sat in my office and said, "I give up." And in that moment of complete surrender, she laughed. "Oh my God, I've been looking for what I already am."
Seriously. That's the whole game.
The secret isn't something you find... it's something you stop covering up. It's not something you become... it's what you've always been. It's not somewhere you go... it's where you've never actually left. We've just gotten really good at overlooking it, ignoring it, thinking it's not special enough to be the answer.
But here's what's wild: the very awareness that recognizes "I'm still searching" is the same awareness that will recognize "I was never lost." The seeker and the sought are the same being. The question and the answer arise from the same source. Think about that.
This doesn't mean stop learning or growing or exploring. Hell no. But it means recognizing that you're not broken, not lacking, not missing some crucial piece. You're not behind or ahead or anywhere other than exactly where life has placed you. Right here. Right now. This is it.
The secret is presence itself. Not trying to be present, but recognizing the presence that's already here. Not cultivating awareness, but acknowledging the awareness that's reading these words. Not finding your true self, but stopping the search long enough to notice who's been looking all along.
It's so simple it's almost insulting to the seeking mind. And that's exactly why it remains a secret... hidden in plain sight, overlooked because it's too obvious, dismissed because it's too immediate.
But you know what? The moment you stop looking "out there" for what's right here, the secret reveals itself. Not as information or experience or attainment, but as the simple, undeniable fact of your own being. The awareness you are. The presence you've always been. The life you're actually living.
That's the secret. You're it. You always have been.
Here's how you practice with the open secret: you stop practicing and start noticing. Wild, right? Instead of doing something to find awareness, just notice the awareness that's already here. Right now, as you read this, there's a knowing presence that's taking in these words. That's it. That's what you've been looking for.
Try this: Throughout your day, pause and ask yourself, "Who or what is aware of this moment?" Don't think about the answer... just notice what's already here before the mind jumps in with explanations. Whether you're washing dishes, stuck in traffic, or having a difficult conversation, there's always this same aware presence witnessing it all.
Here's another approach: When you catch yourself searching, seeking, or feeling like something's missing, stop and smile. Seriously. Just smile and say, "Oh, there I go again, looking for what I already am." It's not about stopping the seeking forever... it's about recognizing the pattern and finding humor in it.
And here's the thing... this "practice" works because it's not really a practice at all. It's a recognition. You're not creating awareness or presence... you're simply acknowledging what's been here all along. It's like suddenly noticing you've been breathing your whole life without trying. The breath was always there; you just started paying attention to it.
The secret reveals itself the moment you stop trying so hard to find it. Honestly, that's the most practical spiritual advice I can give you: relax into what's already here. You're not missing anything. You never were.
When this card shows up, it's time to stop the seeking and start the seeing. You've been looking for something that's been right here all along. The universe is basically tapping you on the shoulder saying, "Hey, you already have what you're looking for."
This card often appears when you're caught in spiritual seeking mode... reading book after book, trying technique after technique, feeling like you're always one breakthrough away from getting it. But here's what's interesting: the very awareness that's frustrated with not finding the answer IS the answer. Think about that.
Look, this doesn't mean you're done learning or growing. But it does mean you can relax the frantic search energy. You're not behind. You're not missing some crucial understanding. You're not broken and needing to be fixed. What you've been seeking has been seeking you right back... because you're the same thing.
If you're feeling called to quiet the mind chatter and just be present, that's this card's invitation. If you're exhausted from all the spiritual effort, this is permission to rest in what's already here. If you've been feeling like enlightenment is somewhere "out there," this is a gentle reminder that it's been "right here" all along.
This card is the spiritual equivalent of looking everywhere for your glasses while they're sitting on your head. The search ends not when you find something new, but when you recognize what's been present all along. Are you ready to stop searching and start seeing?
What would change in my life if I truly knew I wasn't missing anything?
When do I feel most present and aware without trying?
What am I looking for that might already be here?
