The dream is not real, but the dreamer is.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I am the awareness in which all experience arises and dissolves, eternally awake and free"
You know that moment when you're deep in a dream and suddenly realize you're dreaming? That instant shift where everything changes but nothing changes? That's what we're talking about here. Spiritual awakening isn't some cosmic event with fireworks and angels singing. It's more like... you've been watching a movie your whole life thinking you're the character on screen, and then you remember you're actually the one sitting in the theater.
Here's the thing: you've always been awake. Always. The 'you' that's reading this right now? That awareness itself? That's already enlightened. That's already free. What we call awakening isn't becoming something new. It's recognizing what's always been true.
I've sat with thousands of people over the years, and here's what I've noticed. The ones who struggle most with awakening are often the ones trying hardest to 'get' it. They're looking for some special experience, some permanent state of bliss, some certificate of enlightenment. But awakening isn't an experience you have. It's what you are.
Look, the mind loves to make awakening complicated. It wants stages and levels and practices and achievements. But honestly? You could spend thirty years meditating on a mountaintop or you could wake up right now while reading this. The universe doesn't care about your spiritual resume.
Think about it like this: imagine you're an actor who's been playing a role so long, you forgot you're acting. You think you really are the character. You worry about the character's problems, celebrate the character's victories, fear the character's death. Then someone reminds you... dude, you're just acting. Suddenly the whole drama becomes play again. The problems are still there on stage, but they're not YOUR problems anymore. You remember you're the actor, not the role.
That's what happens when you wake up to your true nature. The story of your life keeps playing out, but you remember you're not limited to being just the character. You're the awareness watching the whole show. You're the space in which all experiences arise and dissolve.
Truth is, most people are afraid of awakening because they think it means losing their personality, their relationships, their humanity. But here's what's interesting: awakening doesn't destroy the human experience. It liberates it. When you're not desperately trying to protect and defend a false sense of self, you can actually enjoy being human without taking it so seriously.
I remember talking to a guy who'd had what he called his 'big awakening moment.' He was all excited, telling me about this incredible experience of oneness and how everything made sense. Then he got frustrated because the feeling faded. Know what I told him? The experience was beautiful, but it wasn't the awakening. The awakening was the one who witnessed that experience. The one who's still here now that the experience is gone.
See, experiences come and go. Even the most deep spiritual experiences are temporary. But what you truly are... that doesn't come and go. That's what Zen masters point to when they ask, 'Who were you before your parents were born?' They're not asking about reincarnation. They're pointing to the timeless awareness that's reading these words right now.
The beautiful thing about this recognition is that it's already complete. You don't have to earn it or achieve it or maintain it. You can't lose what you are. You can forget it, get distracted from it, cover it up with thoughts and emotions and stories... but you can't actually lose it. It's like forgetting you have eyes while you're busy looking at everything else.
So when this card shows up, it's not telling you to wake up. It's reminding you that you already are awake. The seeking can stop. The searching can end. Not because you've found what you were looking for, but because you've realized you were never lost.
Here's how you start remembering who you really are. Throughout your day, whenever you catch yourself getting lost in the drama of thoughts and emotions, just pause. Ask yourself: 'Who's aware of this thought? Who's watching this feeling?' Don't try to answer with your mind. Just rest in that space of awareness itself.
Try this simple practice I call 'stepping back.' When you're caught up in any situation, mentally take a step back and notice the one who's observing the whole scene. You're not trying to detach or escape. You're just recognizing that there's a part of you that's always watching, always present, always at peace.
Another thing that helps: spend a few minutes each day just sitting quietly and asking, 'What am I beyond all my thoughts, feelings, and stories?' Don't seek a clever answer. Just rest in the question and see what reveals itself. Often, it's not what you discover but what drops away that matters most.
Here's something practical: when people ask how you're doing, pause before answering. Notice the awareness that exists before you identify with being tired, stressed, happy, or whatever. That awareness... that's what you are. The conditions are just weather passing through the sky of your being.
And honestly? Stop trying so hard. Awakening isn't something you achieve through effort. It's more like relaxing into what's already true. The more you can just be present without needing to fix or change or improve anything, the more obvious your true nature becomes. You're already home. You just forgot to notice.
When this card appears, it's time to stop seeking and start recognizing. You've been looking for awakening as if it's somewhere else, but it's been right here all along. This card is like a gentle tap on the shoulder from the universe saying, 'Hey, remember who you are.'
If you've been feeling spiritually stuck or frustrated with your practice, this card suggests you might be trying too hard. Awakening isn't something you do; it's something you are. The very awareness reading these words is already enlightened. You're not broken and don't need fixing.
This card often shows up when you're ready to move beyond spiritual concepts into direct experience. You've studied enough, practiced enough, sought enough. Now it's time to simply be. The answers you've been looking for aren't hidden in some future realization. They're present in this moment, as this moment.
Sometimes this card appears when you're getting too caught up in the story of your life, forgetting that you're the author, not just the character. It's an invitation to step back into the witnessing awareness that watches all experiences come and go without being touched by any of them.
Pay attention to those moments when you spontaneously feel free, peaceful, or deeply present. That's not a special state you achieved. That's your natural condition revealing itself. This card is asking you to recognize that space as your true home and stop leaving it to go searching for what you already are.
