The sacred art of befriending your own beautiful soul
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I love myself exactly as I am, while growing into who I'm becoming"
Here's the thing about self-love... most of us have it completely backwards. We think we need to earn it, prove we're worthy of it, or wait until we've fixed all our flaws before we can truly love ourselves. But honestly? That's like waiting for the sun to ask permission before it shines.
I've sat with thousands of people over the years, and you know what breaks my heart? The way we talk to ourselves. We'd never speak to a friend the way we speak to our own hearts. We're our own worst critics, our harshest judges. Know what I mean? We've internalized every criticism, every rejection, every moment someone made us feel small. And now we carry that voice around like some twisted security blanket.
But here's what's wild... self-love isn't something you achieve. It's something you remember. You came into this world loving yourself completely. Watch a toddler sometime. They don't question their worthiness. They don't analyze whether they deserve joy. They just ARE joy. They just ARE love. That's your true nature, right there.
The Tao teaches us that we're already whole, already perfect in our imperfection. The sages knew this secret: you don't need to become loveable because you never stopped being loveable. You just forgot. Life happened. People hurt you. You learned to protect yourself by shutting down parts of your heart. But that tender, innocent part of you? Still there. Still waiting.
Advaita points to this beautiful truth... there's no separate self to love or not love. There's just this one consciousness, expressing itself as YOU. How can consciousness not love itself? It's like asking fire not to be warm or water not to be wet. Love is what you ARE, not what you do.
Look, I get it. Self-love can feel selfish, especially if you grew up being told to put others first. But think about this: you can't give what you don't have. You can't pour from an empty cup. When you love yourself deeply, authentically, you become a fountain instead of a drain. You become someone who can love others without keeping score, without resentment, without burning out.
Truth is, most of what we call love is actually need in disguise. We love people who make us feel good about ourselves. We love things that validate our worth. But real self-love? It doesn't need anything from anyone. It's not contingent on success or failure, on being perfect or being a mess. It's the unconditional acceptance of what IS.
And here's something beautiful I've noticed: when you start loving yourself for real, everything shifts. Not because you're trying to manipulate the universe or manifest some outcome. But because love literally changes your frequency. You start attracting different experiences, different people, different opportunities. Not as a strategy, but as a natural consequence of being aligned with your true nature.
Seriously, the relationship you have with yourself sets the template for every other relationship in your life. How you treat yourself is how you'll let others treat you. The standards you set with yourself become the standards you accept from the world. Are you with me? This isn't just feel-good spirituality. This is practical wisdom for living.
But here's what's interesting... self-love doesn't mean thinking you're better than everyone else. That's ego masquerading as love. Real self-love is humble. It recognizes your humanity, your struggles, your beautiful messiness. It says, 'Yeah, I'm flawed and I'm learning and I'm worthy of love anyway.' That's powerful in a world that says you need to be perfect to deserve good things.
Start your day by putting your hand on your heart and saying, 'Good morning, beautiful soul.' I know it might feel weird at first, but stick with it. Your heart needs to hear kind words from you more than anyone else.
Here's a practice I love: talk to yourself like you're your own best friend. When you mess up, ask yourself, 'What would I say to my best friend right now?' Then say THAT to yourself instead of the usual harsh criticism. Honestly, this one simple shift will change everything.
Create little love notes to yourself. Put them in places you'll find them later... your bathroom mirror, your car visor, your computer. Let future you receive love from present you. It's like having a cheerleader who actually knows what you're going through because it's YOU.
Practice the pause. When that inner critic starts up, just stop. Take a breath. Ask yourself, 'Is this thought helpful? Is it true? Is it kind?' Most of the time, the answer is no to all three. Then gently redirect your thoughts toward something more loving. This takes practice, but your nervous system will thank you.
And here's something powerful: forgive yourself daily. Not just for the big stuff, but for the little things. For being human. For having needs. For not being perfect. Forgiveness is self-love in action, and it's a practice, not a one-time event.
When Self-Love appears, it's time to stop waiting for permission to love yourself fully. You've been putting yourself last for too long, and your soul is asking for your attention. This card is a gentle reminder that you're not broken and you don't need fixing... you need loving.
Maybe you've been seeking validation from others, hoping they'll convince you of your worth. But this card says the love you're seeking has to start from within. Not because you're selfish, but because you're the only one who can give yourself the unconditional acceptance your heart craves.
This might be showing up because you're at a crossroads where old patterns of self-criticism just aren't serving you anymore. Your relationships, your work, your whole life is asking you to step into a deeper relationship with yourself. To stop treating yourself like the enemy and start recognizing the beautiful soul you've always been.
Trust this process. Self-love isn't a destination you arrive at... it's a way of traveling through life. And right now, your journey is asking you to be kinder to the person you spend the most time with: YOU.
What would change in my life if I truly believed I was worthy of love, exactly as I am right now?
