The Teaching

Here's the thing about courage: it's not the absence of fear. It's showing up anyway. I've watched thousands of people over the years struggle with this misunderstanding, thinking they need to feel fearless before they can be brave. But that's backwards, you know?

The Bhagavad Gita talks about this beautifully when Krishna tells Arjuna that duty isn't about feeling ready... it's about acting from your deepest truth even when your hands are shaking. Arjuna was terrified on that battlefield, but his courage wasn't about not being scared. His courage was about choosing love over fear, dharma over comfort.

Truth is, courage is your natural state. I know that sounds crazy when you're lying awake at 3 AM worrying about everything, but hear me out. Before you learned to be afraid, before the world taught you to doubt yourself, you were this fearless little being who'd try anything. You'd climb trees, talk to strangers, ask impossible questions. That courage didn't disappear... it just got buried under layers of "what if" and "but I can't" and "who am I to..."

The Tao Te Ching puts it perfectly: "The way of the sage is to act but not compete." Real courage isn't about forcing yourself into warrior mode or psyching yourself up with motivational mantras. It's quieter than that. It's the gentle persistence of water wearing down rock. It's showing up consistently, even when you don't feel like it.

Look, I've seen people think they need to wait until they feel brave to leave that toxic relationship, start that business, or speak their truth. But here's what's interesting: courage isn't a feeling you wait for. It's a choice you make in the moment. Every single time.

The mystics understood this. They knew that the separate self... this "me" that gets scared... is just a story we're telling ourselves. When you really get that, when you glimpse the truth that you're not this small, separate thing trying to survive in a hostile universe, courage becomes natural. Of course you're brave. You're life itself expressing through this temporary form.

But let's get practical here. In Advaita Vedanta, they talk about being the witness of your experience. When fear shows up, you don't have to be fear. You can watch it arise, notice it, maybe even say "Oh, hello fear. I see you." And then you can choose to act from something deeper... from the part of you that knows who you really are.

Honestly, some of my most courageous moments have been tiny things. Like speaking up when someone was being cruel to a waiter. Or admitting I was wrong when my ego wanted to double down. Or just being honest about how I was feeling instead of pretending everything was fine. These small acts of authenticity? They're training wheels for bigger courage.

The beautiful thing is that courage builds on itself. Each time you choose truth over comfort, each time you act from love instead of fear, you're strengthening that courage muscle. You're remembering who you really are. And who you really are is already whole, already complete, already brave enough for whatever life brings.

Think about that. You've survived every difficult thing that's happened to you so far. Every loss, every disappointment, every moment when you thought you couldn't go on... you made it through. That's not luck. That's courage. That's the invincible spirit that lives in you, whether you recognize it or not.

How to Embody This Teaching

Start small, seriously. Courage isn't about jumping off cliffs... it's about being willing to feel uncomfortable. Today, practice micro-courage. Speak up in a meeting when you usually stay quiet. Wear something that feels a little too bold for you. Have that conversation you've been avoiding.

Here's a simple practice I teach: when you feel that familiar flutter of "I should do this but I'm scared," pause. Take three deep breaths and ask yourself: "What would I do if I trusted that I'm already okay, no matter what happens?" Then do that thing, even if your hands are shaking. Especially if your hands are shaking.

Another powerful approach: start noticing when you're acting from fear versus love. Fear contracts... it makes you smaller, more defensive, more worried about protecting yourself. Love expands... it makes you curious, generous, willing to be vulnerable. When you catch yourself in fear-mode, gently ask: "How would I respond from love right now?"

Remember, you're not trying to eliminate fear. You're learning to dance with it. Fear is information, not instruction. It tells you something matters to you, but it doesn't get to make your decisions. You do.

When This Card Appears

When Courage appears in your reading, it's a clear sign that you're being called to step up. Something in your life is asking for more authenticity, more truth, more of who you really are. This isn't about being reckless or forcing anything... it's about trusting the deeper wisdom that's trying to move through you.

If you've been playing small, this card is a gentle nudge to expand. If you've been avoiding a difficult conversation or decision, it's time. The universe is basically saying: "You're ready, even if you don't feel ready." And honestly, you are ready. You wouldn't be getting this message if you weren't.

This card often shows up when you're on the edge of a breakthrough. You've done the inner work, you've gained the insights, and now it's time for action. The courage you need isn't something you have to manufacture... it's already there, waiting for you to claim it.

Pay attention to where you're being called to be braver. It might be in relationships, career, creativity, or spiritual growth. Trust that inner voice that's whispering "what if..." instead of the louder voice that's shouting "but you can't." You can. And deep down, you know it.
