You are not your thoughts; you are the awareness that witnesses them.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I am the silent observer of my thoughts, feelings, and sensations. I rest in the stillness of my own awareness."
The 'Observe' card is a deep invitation to step back from the drama of your life and to rest in the calm, clear space of your own awareness. It is a call to become the witness, the silent observer of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations, without getting entangled in them. This is not a passive act; it is a powerful spiritual practice that can liberate you from the tyranny of your own mind. To observe is to realize that you are not the fleeting contents of your consciousness, but the vast, unchanging container in which they arise and pass away.
In the tradition of Advaita Vedanta, the concept of the 'witness consciousness' (Sakshi) is central. The witness is that aspect of our being that is always present, always aware, yet never affected by the comings and goings of the phenomenal world. It is the pure, unconditioned awareness that is our true nature. The practice of self-inquiry, as taught by Ramana Maharshi, is a direct path to realizing this witness consciousness. By repeatedly asking the question 'Who am I?', we begin to dis-identify from the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that we normally take to be ourselves. We begin to rest in the silent, spacious awareness that is the source of all experience.
Advaita Vedanta teaches that our true identity is not the ego, but the silent, witnessing awareness that is the ground of all being.
The practice of mindfulness, as taught in the Buddhist tradition, is another powerful path to cultivating the observer. Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment, without judgment. When we are mindful, we are not trying to change our experience; we are simply observing it as it is. This simple act of observation has a deep life-changing effect. It creates a space between our awareness and our experience, a space in which we can choose how to respond, rather than simply reacting out of habit.
I once worked with a man who suffered from severe anxiety. He was constantly plagued by worried thoughts and a sense of impending doom. He had tried everything to get rid of his anxiety – medication, therapy, positive thinking – but nothing had worked. I introduced him to the practice of observation. I taught him to simply sit with his anxiety, to observe the thoughts and sensations without judgment. At first, he found it incredibly difficult. His mind would race, and his body would be flooded with fear. But he persisted. Slowly, he began to notice that his anxiety was not a solid, monolithic thing. It was a constantly changing flow of thoughts, feelings, and sensations. He began to see that he was not his anxiety; he was the awareness that was witnessing it. This realization was a turning point for him. He still experiences anxiety from time to time, but it no longer has the same power over him. He has learned to rest in the calm, clear space of his own awareness.
Embodying the teaching of 'Observe' is a practice of mindful awareness. You can practice it formally, by setting aside time each day to sit in meditation and to observe your breath, your thoughts, and your sensations. You can also practice it informally, by bringing a quality of mindful observation to your daily activities. When you are washing the dishes, just wash the dishes. Feel the warm water on your hands, the smoothness of the plates. When you are walking, just walk. Feel the sensation of your feet on the ground, the movement of your body through space. The more you practice observation, the more you will find yourself resting in the present moment, free from the grip of your thoughts and emotions.
When the 'Observe' card appears in a reading, it is a message to step back and to witness your experience without judgment. You may be caught up in a story, a drama, or a strong emotion. This card is a reminder that you are not your story. You are not your drama. You are not your emotion. You are the awareness that is witnessing it all. This card is an invitation to find the still point in the turning world. It is a call to rest in the calm, clear space of your own being. From this place of observation, you will find the wisdom and the clarity you need to work through any situation.
