Presence

The past is a ghost, the future is a dream, and the only reality is the fierce, tender, and radical now.

The Teaching

You are not here. You are in yesterday’s argument, replaying the tapes, trying to win a case that has already been dismissed. You are in tomorrow’s meeting, rehearsing your lines, bracing for a future that exists only in your imagination. You are lost in the labyrinth of your own mind, a ghost haunting the ruins of the past and the construction site of the future. The spiritual search is not a journey to a faraway land. It is the radical, and often terrifying, act of arriving right where you are. Presence is not a state you achieve. It is the home you have forgotten. This card is a demand: stop trespassing in the imaginary territories of past and future. Come home, now.

The Unmoving Screen: A Vedantic Perspective

Advaita Vedanta has a beautifully simple, yet mind-shattering, teaching: you are already free. You are already whole. You are Brahman, the one, timeless, and ever-present Consciousness. The only reason you don’t experience this is because of a case of mistaken identity. You have mistaken the movie for the screen. You have identified with the ego, the chattering voice in your head that is nothing more than a bundle of memories, beliefs, and fears. This ego lives exclusively in the past and the future. It cannot survive in the present moment.

The great sage Ramana Maharshi offered a direct path back to this ever-present reality: Self-inquiry. He taught his students to relentlessly ask the question, “Who am I?” When a thought arises, you ask, “To whom has this thought occurred?” The answer, of course, is “To me.” And then you ask, “Who am I?” This is not an intellectual exercise. It is a scalpel that cuts through the illusion of the ego and returns you to the source of all thought, the silent, spacious awareness that is your true nature. This is Presence. It is not something you do; it is what you are when you stop doing everything else.

The Still Point of the Turning World: A Taoist View

The Tao is not found in grand plans or dramatic resolutions. It is found in the simple, unadorned, and often overlooked reality of the present moment. The Taoist masters taught that the greatest power is found not in action, but in stillness. Not in speaking, but in listening. Not in striving, but in being.

The Tao Te Ching (Chapter 16) says, “Empty your mind of all thoughts. Let your heart be at peace. Watch the turmoil of beings, but contemplate their return. Each separate being in the universe returns to the common source. Returning to the source is serenity.”

Presence, in the Taoist sense, is returning to the source. It is becoming so still and so quiet that you can feel the subtle, intelligent, and benevolent flow of the Tao moving through you and through all things. It is to stand at the still point of the turning world, to witness the chaos without being consumed by it. The mind wants to label, to analyze, to control. The Tao simply is. To be present is to let go of the mind’s frantic need to understand and to simply rest in the deep and mysterious beingness of this moment.

A Real-Life Example: The Man on the Ledge

I once worked with a man who was a successful lawyer, but he was also a raging alcoholic and his life was falling apart. He had lost his family, he was about to lose his job, and he was drowning in a sea of shame and regret. One night, he found himself standing on the ledge of a bridge, ready to end it all. He was completely lost in the story of his failures, the ghost of his past.

As he stood there, a cold wind blew, and for a single, eternal moment, it cut through the fog of his mind. He felt the raw sensation of the wind on his skin. He heard the sound of the water below. He saw the lights of the city. He was, for the first time in years, completely and utterly present. In that moment of pure presence, the story of “me, the failure” dissolved. There was just the wind, the water, the lights, and the silent, witnessing awareness. He told me later, “I didn’t decide to live. I just… was. And in that being, the thought of jumping became absurd.” That moment of presence didn’t magically fix his life. But it gave him a taste of a reality beyond his story. It was the beginning of his journey home.

This card is that gust of wind. It is a fierce, loving, and urgent call to wake up from the dream of your life and to step into the reality of it. The past is a memory. The future is a fantasy. All you have is now. And in this now, if you are brave enough to be fully here, you will find everything you have been searching for.

How to Embody This Teaching

How to Embody This Teaching

This is a simple but radical practice called “Dropping the Story.” You can do it anytime you find yourself lost in the labyrinth of your mind.

1. **Notice you are lost.** This is the first and most important step. Become aware that you are not here. You are in a story about the past or the future. 2. **Name the story.** Silently say to yourself, “Ah, this is the ‘I’m not good enough’ story,” or “This is the ‘what if it all goes wrong?’ story.” Naming it creates a space of separation between you and the thought. 3. **Feel your feet on the ground.** Bring your attention out of your head and into your body. Feel the solid support of the earth beneath you. This is real. Your story is not. 4. **Take one conscious breath.** Feel the sensation of the air entering your nostrils, filling your lungs, and then leaving your body. This breath is happening now. Your story is not. 5. **Engage one of your senses.** What is one thing you can see, right now? What is one thing you can hear? What is one thing you can feel? Anchor yourself in the raw, unfiltered sensory experience of the present moment.

This practice is not about stopping your thoughts. It’s about dis-identifying from them. It’s about realizing that you are the sky, not the clouds. The more you practice dropping the story, the more you will come to rest in the vast, open, and peaceful sky of your own presence.

When This Card Appears

When This Card Appears

When the Presence card appears, it is a spiritual stop sign. It is a clear and unequivocal message to stop what you are doing, to stop worrying, to stop planning, and to simply be here now. You have been living in your head, lost in the fog of anxiety about the future or regret about the past. Your soul is starved for the nourishment of the present moment.

This card is a call to radical simplicity. It asks you to let go of the complexity of your problems and to drop into the simplicity of your being. The answers you are seeking are not in your mind. They are in the stillness, in the silence, in the spacious awareness that is your true nature. The Presence card is an invitation to come home. It is a reminder that the only time you can ever be happy, the only time you can ever be free, is now.
