To withdraw from the world is to return to yourself.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I give myself permission to retreat and recharge. I honor my need for solitude and stillness."
The 'Retreat' card is a loving and necessary invitation to step away from the relentless demands of the world and to come home to yourself. It is a call to honor your need for solitude, for stillness, and for deep, restorative rest. In our hyper-connected, always-on culture, the act of retreating is a radical act of self-preservation. It is not an escape from life, but a conscious and courageous turning towards the source of life within you. To retreat is to create a sacred space for your soul to breathe, to heal, and to remember its own vastness.
Throughout history, mystics, saints, and sages of all traditions have understood the deep power of spiritual retreat. Jesus spent 40 days in the desert. The Buddha sat in meditation under the Bodhi tree. The Desert Fathers and Mothers of early Christianity sought God in the solitude of the Egyptian wilderness. These were not acts of escapism; they were intentional journeys into the heart of reality. In the silence and solitude of retreat, the veils of illusion begin to fall away. The noise of the ego subsides, and we are able to hear the still, small voice of the divine within us.
The great spiritual masters of all traditions have shown us that the path to enlightenment is paved with solitude. To find God, we must first be willing to be alone with ourselves.
The practice of spiritual retreat is not about navel-gazing or self-indulgence. It is a vital and necessary discipline for anyone who is serious about the spiritual path. It is a time to unplug from the matrix of social conditioning and to plug into the source of all being. It is a time to let go of the roles we play, the masks we wear, and to simply be. In the spaciousness of retreat, we are able to see our lives with a new clarity. We are able to gain perspective on our problems, to heal our wounds, and to reconnect with our deepest purpose.
A few years ago, I was feeling completely burned out. I was working too much, sleeping too little, and my spiritual practice had become dry and mechanical. I felt disconnected from myself and from the world. I knew I needed to make a change, but I didn't know what. On a whim, I booked a week-long silent retreat at a remote monastery. The first few days were excruciating. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, anxieties, and to-do lists. I was bored, restless, and lonely. But I stuck with it. Around the fourth day, something shifted. The inner storm began to subside. A deep sense of peace and stillness began to emerge. I started to notice the beauty of my surroundings – the way the light played on the leaves of the trees, the sound of the wind, the taste of the simple, vegetarian food. By the end of the week, I felt like a new person. I was rested, renewed, and reconnected to the source of my own being. That retreat was a turning point in my life. It reminded me of the deep and non-negotiable importance of taking time for myself, of stepping away from the world in order to return to it with a full and open heart.
Embodying the teaching of 'Retreat' is about creating intentional spaces for solitude and stillness in your life. You don't have to go to a monastery for a week to experience the benefits of retreat. You can create a mini-retreat for yourself right at home. Turn off your phone, your computer, and your TV for a day, or even just for a few hours. Spend time in nature. Meditate. Journal. Read a spiritual book. Do whatever it is that nourishes your soul. The key is to be intentional about creating a space that is free from the distractions of the outside world. The more you practice the art of retreat, the more you will find that you are able to bring a sense of peace, clarity, and centeredness to all aspects of your life.
When the 'Retreat' card appears in a reading, it is a clear and loving message to take a step back. You may have been pushing yourself too hard, giving too much, or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of your life. This card is a permission slip to rest, to recharge, and to reconnect with yourself. It is a sign that you are in need of solitude and stillness. This is not a time for more doing; it is a time for more being. Honor your need for retreat. It is not a luxury; it is a necessity for your spiritual well-being.
