It’s not enough to be busy; the question is, what are you busy about?
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I align my actions with my soul's purpose and move through the world as an instrument of divine effectiveness."
Look, I've worked with thousands of people over the years, and you know what I've noticed? The most effective people aren't necessarily the busiest ones. They're the ones who've figured out something deeper. They're the ones who've connected their actions to their soul's purpose. That's what real effectiveness is about.
The Bhagavad Gita talks about karma yoga, which is basically the art of right action. It's not about doing more stuff. It's about doing the right stuff for the right reasons. Krishna tells Arjuna that when you align your actions with your dharma, your life's purpose, you become a force of nature. Your effectiveness isn't forced or stressed. It flows.
Here's the thing: most of us are running around trying to be productive without being purposeful. We're checking boxes, meeting deadlines, staying busy. But effectiveness? That's different. Effectiveness happens when your actions are rooted in something bigger than your ego's agenda.
I remember this client, brilliant woman, CEO of a tech company. She was productive as hell, working 80-hour weeks, crushing her quarterly goals. But she felt empty inside. Know what I mean? All that productivity, but she wasn't being effective at what actually mattered to her soul.
Truth is, effectiveness isn't measured by how much you do. It's measured by how aligned your doing is with your being. When you're living from your dharma, when you're expressing your soul's gifts in service to something greater than yourself, you become incredibly effective without the struggle.
Think about the great teachers, healers, artists, leaders throughout history. They weren't just busy people. They were people whose actions flowed from a deep sense of purpose. Their effectiveness came from alignment, not effort.
But here's what's interesting: finding that alignment requires some inner work. You've got to get quiet enough to hear what your soul actually wants to do in this lifetime. You've got to distinguish between what you think you should be doing and what you're actually called to do.
The ego wants to be impressive. The soul wants to be impactful. Seriously. There's a difference between performing productivity and living effectiveness. One exhausts you. The other energizes you.
When you're being truly effective, you're not forcing outcomes. You're creating conditions for the right outcomes to emerge naturally. You're working with the flow of life instead of against it. Your actions become expressions of love instead of expressions of fear.
I've seen people transform their entire lives when they shifted from trying to be productive to choosing to be effective. They stopped asking "What do I need to get done?" and started asking "What wants to be born through me?" Wild, right?
That's the secret of effectiveness. It's not about doing more. It's about being more of who you actually are and letting that authentic self move through the world with purpose and power.
Want to cultivate real effectiveness in your life? Start with this simple but powerful practice. Every morning, before you check your phone or get into your to-do list, sit quietly for five minutes and ask yourself: "What wants to move through me today?"
Listen. Not to your mental chatter about deadlines and obligations, but to that deeper voice. The one that knows why you're here. Let that voice guide your choices about how you spend your energy.
Throughout your day, pause before major actions and ask: "Is this aligned with my highest purpose?" If the answer is yes, move forward with full presence and intention. If the answer is no, see if you can either delegate it, eliminate it, or find a way to infuse it with purpose.
Here's something I do with my clients: at the end of each day, instead of just reviewing what you accomplished, review how you felt while accomplishing it. Did your actions energize you or drain you? Did they feel like expressions of your authentic self or obligations you were forcing yourself through? This awareness will start shifting you toward more effective choices naturally.
Remember, effectiveness isn't about perfection. It's about alignment. Some days you'll nail it. Other days you'll catch yourself in old patterns. That's human. The practice is simply returning again and again to purposeful action rooted in love instead of fear.
When this card appears in your reading, it's time to examine the relationship between your actions and your soul's purpose. Are you being busy or are you being effective? There's a big difference, and your spirit is calling you to choose effectiveness.
This card often shows up when you've been spinning your wheels, working hard but not necessarily working smart. It's an invitation to step back and realign. What you're doing might be good, but is it what you're truly called to do? Is it serving your highest purpose and the greater good?
If you've been feeling scattered or overwhelmed, this card is reminding you that true effectiveness comes from focus and alignment, not from doing more things. Your soul is asking you to prioritize what matters most and let go of what doesn't serve your deeper purpose.
This card can also indicate that you're entering a period where your actions will have more impact than usual. When you're aligned with your dharma, even small actions create ripple effects. Pay attention to opportunities to serve something bigger than yourself. That's where your real power lies.
Sometimes this card appears when you've been avoiding taking action altogether. If that resonates, it's time to move. But move consciously. Move with purpose. Move from love instead of fear. Your effectiveness isn't about forcing outcomes. It's about showing up authentically and letting life flow through you.
What would my life look like if I only took actions that were aligned with my deepest purpose?
Where in my life am I being busy instead of being effective, and what needs to change?
What wants to be born or created through me that I've been avoiding or postponing?
