The Teaching

The Fool. In our culture, it’s a term of derision. To be a fool is to be naive, to be unwise, to be a laughingstock. But in the great spiritual traditions, the Fool is a figure of deep wisdom and power. The Fool is the one who has emptied himself of all the cleverness, all the knowledge, all the egoic striving that we hold so dear. He is the sacred zero, the empty vessel, the beginner’s mind. To the world, he looks like a fool. But to the wise, he is a master.

The Taoist Fool: The Uncarved Block

The Tao Te Ching is full of praise for the fool. In Chapter 20, Lao Tzu writes, “I am a fool. My mind is dull and murky. Other people are bright and clever, I alone am dark and dim. Other people are sharp and clever, I alone am dull and stupid. I am calm as the ocean, blown by the wind, seemingly without a destination. Everyone else is busy, I alone am aimless and stubborn. I am different from other people, I am nourished by the great mother.” This is not the self-pity of a depressed man. It is the radical declaration of a sage who has seen through the futility of the ego’s endless striving. The Taoist fool is the “uncarved block,” the person who has returned to their original nature, before it was carved up by concepts, by beliefs, by the endless pursuit of knowledge. He is wise because he knows that he knows nothing. He is powerful because he has surrendered to the Tao.

“When a foolish man hears of the Tao, he laughs out loud. If it were not for that laugh, it would not be the Tao.” - Tao Te Ching, Chapter 41

This verse is a powerful reminder that the Tao is not a concept that can be grasped by the rational mind. It is a mystery that can only be lived. The fool’s laughter is not a sign of his ignorance, but of his freedom. He is not trying to figure it out. He is simply enjoying the cosmic joke.

The Holy Fool: A Mirror to the World

In the Christian tradition, we have the figure of the “holy fool,” the saint who feigns madness in order to reveal the madness of the world. The holy fool speaks truth to power, he exposes hypocrisy, and he lives a life of radical freedom, unconstrained by social conventions. St. Francis of Assisi, who stripped naked in the public square to renounce his father’s wealth, is a perfect example of the holy fool. To the world, he was a madman. To God, he was a saint. The holy fool is a living embodiment of the teaching of St. Paul: “If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become ‘fools’ so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.”

Advaita Vedanta: The Jnani as a Child

In Advaita Vedanta, the jnani, the enlightened sage, is often compared to a child, a madman, or a ghost. He appears to be a fool because he is no longer playing the game of the world. He has no ambition, no agenda, no desire to be seen as wise or important. He is simply resting in the bliss of his own being. The great sage Ramana Maharshi lived a life of utter simplicity, often sitting in silence for hours, seemingly oblivious to the world around him. To the casual observer, he might have appeared to be a simpleton. But to those who had the eyes to see, he was a radiant sun of wisdom, a living embodiment of the highest truth. The jnani is a fool in the eyes of the world because he has seen through the illusion of the world. He has realized that the only reality is the Self, and in that realization, all the strivings of the ego are seen to be utterly absurd.

A Real-Life Scenario: The Leap of Faith

I once knew a woman who had a very successful career as a lawyer. She had all the external trappings of success: a high-powered job, a beautiful apartment, a busy social life. But she was miserable. Her soul was dying. The “Fool” card came up for her, and it was a terrifying and exhilarating invitation. It was a call to leap into the unknown. After much soul-searching, she quit her job, sold her apartment, and bought a one-way ticket to India. Her friends and family thought she had lost her mind. They called her a fool. And in a way, she was. She was a holy fool, a fool for God. She had no plan, no safety net, no idea what she was going to do. She spent a year traveling, meditating, and studying with various teachers. She lived on a shoestring budget, and she was happier than she had ever been. When she returned, she was a different person. She had a radiance, a peace, a wisdom that she had never possessed as a high-powered lawyer. She eventually became a spiritual teacher herself, guiding others to take their own leap of faith. She had embodied the wisdom of the Fool, and in doing so, she had found her true life.

How to Embody This Teaching

How to Embody This Teaching

Embodying the wisdom of the Fool is a practice of letting go. It’s about consciously and consistently releasing the need to be right, the need to be in control, the need to have it all figured out. Start by embracing the phrase “I don’t know.” The next time you are in a conversation and you feel the urge to have an opinion, to be the expert, try saying, “I don’t know.” Feel the delicious freedom of it. Practice beginner’s mind. Approach a familiar task, a familiar relationship, a familiar place as if you are seeing it for the first time. Let go of your preconceived notions and allow yourself to be surprised. And most more to the point, take a leap of faith. It doesn’t have to be as dramatic as quitting your job and moving to India. It could be as simple as signing up for a class you know nothing about, or taking a different route home from work, or striking up a conversation with a stranger. The Fool is not about being reckless. It is about being open to the magic and mystery of life. It is about trusting that when you leap, a net will appear.

When This Card Appears

When This Card Appears

When the “Fool” card appears in a reading, it is a powerful sign that you are at the beginning of a new journey. It is a call to embrace the unknown, to take a leap of faith, and to trust your instincts. This is not a time for careful planning or rational analysis. It is a time for spontaneity, for adventure, for following your bliss. The Fool is the cosmic permission slip to let go of the old and to step into the new. You may be feeling a mixture of excitement and terror, and that is perfectly normal. The Fool’s journey is always a journey into the unknown. This card is a reminder that you don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to take the first step. Trust that the path will appear before you as you walk it. The universe is conspiring in your favor. Have the courage to be a fool.

Journaling Prompts

1

What is the ‘leap of faith’ that my soul is calling me to take right now? What am I afraid of?

2

In what areas of my life am I trying to be too clever, too in control? What would it look like to let go and be a ‘fool’ in that area?

3

Can I recall a time when I took a risk and it paid off in an unexpected and wonderful way? What did that experience teach me about the wisdom of the Fool?
