Temporary Self

The self you think you are is just a passing wave

The Teaching

Here's the thing about what you call "yourself." That whole collection of thoughts, memories, preferences, and stories you've been carrying around? It's temporary. Wild, right? I mean, think about it. The person you were five years ago had different thoughts, different dreams, maybe even different fears. Where did that version of you go?

Look, I'm not trying to freak you out here. But after three decades of sitting with people in readings, I've seen this truth play out over and over. We get so attached to our temporary selves that we forget there's something deeper underneath. Something that doesn't change when your job changes, when your relationship status shifts, when your body ages.

The temporary self is like... okay, imagine you're the ocean. The temporary self is just the wave on the surface. The wave thinks it's separate, thinks it's important, thinks it's going to last forever. But honestly? It's just water being water. The wave crashes, but the ocean remains. Are you with me?

I've been studying Advaita Vedanta and Taoism for years now, and both traditions point to this same truth: what you think is "you" is actually just a temporary formation of consciousness. It's not wrong or bad, it's just... not permanent. It's like a cloud formation in the sky of awareness.

But here's what's interesting. When you start to see through the illusion of the temporary self, something amazing happens. You stop taking everything so personally. That criticism at work? It's just hitting the temporary self, not the real you. That rejection, that disappointment, that fear about the future? All temporary self stuff.

Truth is, recognizing the temporary nature of the self is incredibly freeing. You start to play with life instead of being so serious about it. You can try on different versions of yourself without getting stuck in any of them. Want to be more confident? Put on that self for a while. Need to be vulnerable? There's a self for that too.

Think about that. You're not stuck being who you think you are right now. That's just one costume in an infinite wardrobe.

The Taoists call this wu wei... flowing like water, not getting attached to any particular form. When you realize your self is temporary, you can flow with life instead of constantly trying to protect and defend this imaginary fixed identity.

Seriously. How much energy do you spend trying to maintain your self-image? Trying to be consistent with who you think you are? It's exhausting, right? But when you see it's all temporary anyway, you can relax. You can just be present with whatever's happening without needing it to fit your story about yourself.

I've watched people transform completely once they get this. They stop defending positions that don't serve them. They stop staying in situations just because "that's who I am." They start living from a place of freedom instead of a place of protecting their temporary self.

How to Embody This Teaching

Alright, let's make this practical. Start each morning by asking yourself: "Who am I being today?" Not who you ARE, but who you're BEING. Feel the difference? You're choosing a temporary self to wear, like picking out clothes.

Throughout the day, catch yourself when you're defending your self-image. Notice when you think things like "I'm not that kind of person" or "That's just how I am." Pause. Breathe. Remember: it's all temporary anyway.

Try this experiment: for one week, consciously be slightly different than usual. If you're normally quiet, speak up more. If you're always helping others, let someone help you. Don't go crazy with it, just... stretch a little. See how it feels to not be locked into your usual temporary self.

Before bed, reflect on who you were that day. What temporary self showed up? Was it helpful? Did it serve you and others? No judgment here, just curiosity. Tomorrow you get to choose again.

Here's a powerful practice I've used for years: sit quietly and ask, "What would remain if all my thoughts, memories, and personality traits disappeared?" Don't try to answer with your mind. Just sit with the question and feel into the space where the answer might be.

When This Card Appears

When this card appears, it's time to loosen your grip on who you think you are. You've been taking your temporary self way too seriously lately, haven't you? Maybe you're stuck in old patterns or defending an identity that's honestly not serving you anymore.

This card is asking you to remember: you're not your thoughts, your job, your relationship status, or even your personality. Those are just temporary costumes you wear. The real you is the awareness that witnesses all these temporary selves coming and going.

Right now, there's an opportunity to reinvent yourself. Not in a superficial way, but by recognizing that reinvention is actually what's always happening. You're different today than you were yesterday, whether you realize it or not. This card is inviting you to be more conscious about that process.

Look for areas where you're holding onto outdated versions of yourself. Maybe you're still operating from an old story about what you can or can't do. Maybe you're defending behaviors that don't align with who you're becoming. It's time to let those go.

The temporary self wants to be seen, understood, validated. But what if you didn't need any of that? What if you could just show up fresh in each moment, without the weight of maintaining a consistent identity? That's the freedom this card is pointing toward.
