Finding the sacred balance between holding on and letting go
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I trust the perfect rhythm of my unfolding and choose presence over pressure.""
You know, I've been thinking about this whole temperance thing lately. Not the old-fashioned 'don't drink' kind, but the real deal. The kind that changes everything. Here's the thing: temperance isn't about restriction or deprivation. It's about finding that sweet spot where you're neither grasping desperately nor pushing away what's right in front of you.
I remember this client I had years ago, Sarah. She came to me completely burned out. Working sixty-hour weeks, saying yes to everything, trying to be perfect for everyone. Sound familiar? She thought being spiritual meant giving endlessly. But here's what's interesting: she was actually avoiding the real work. The work of saying no. The work of boundaries. The work of temperance.
Truth is, temperance is the most misunderstood spiritual quality out there. We think it means being boring or playing it safe. But honestly? It's the opposite. It's about having such deep trust in life's flow that you don't need to force outcomes or control every detail. Are you with me?
Think about a river. It doesn't rush frantically toward the ocean, and it doesn't fight the current by trying to flow backward. It just flows. Steadily. Purposefully. With complete trust in its destination. That's temperance in action.
But here's where it gets really interesting. In the Taoist tradition, they call this wu wei - effortless action. It's not about being passive or lazy. It's about moving in harmony with the natural rhythm of things. Like a skilled dancer who knows exactly when to lead and when to follow. Seriously. Think about that.
I've noticed something in my thirty years of doing this work. The people who struggle most with temperance are often the most spiritually hungry ones. They want enlightenment NOW. They want their chakras perfectly aligned by Thursday. They want to manifest their soulmate before the weekend. Know what I mean?
But life doesn't work that way. Real transformation happens in seasons, not moments. It happens through consistent, gentle pressure over time. Like water wearing away stone. Not through force or urgency.
Look, I get it. We live in a culture that worships excess. More money, more success, more experiences, more everything. But what if enough was actually enough? What if there was deep freedom in choosing less? What if temperance was actually the doorway to abundance?
Here's what I've learned: temperance isn't about denying yourself pleasure or joy. It's about being so present, so aware, that you can actually receive what's being offered without needing to hoard it or consume it frantically. It's about quality over quantity. Depth over breadth.
When you practice real temperance, something magical happens. You start to taste your food more fully. You start to really listen when people talk. You start to notice the way light hits your coffee cup in the morning. Life becomes richer, not poorer.
Wild, right? The less you grasp, the more you actually receive. The more you trust the natural timing of things, the more synchronicities show up. The more you practice restraint, the more authentic power flows through you.
But temperance isn't just about moderation in external things. It's about emotional temperance too. Not getting swept away by every feeling that passes through. Not making major life decisions from a place of reactivity or fear. Learning to pause. To breathe. To feel what's happening without immediately needing to fix or change it.
This is where the real spiritual work happens, honestly. In that space between stimulus and response. In that moment when you feel the urge to react and you choose to pause instead. That's where freedom lives. That's where wisdom grows.
So temperance isn't about becoming some bland, passionless person. It's about becoming so deeply grounded in your own truth that you don't need external validation or stimulation to feel alive. You become the calm center in the storm of life. And from that place, right action arises naturally.
Here's how you start practicing real temperance, and I mean starting today. First thing tomorrow morning, before you do anything else, sit quietly for five minutes. Just five. Don't meditate or breathe special or anything fancy. Just sit. Feel your body in the chair. Notice what's happening without trying to change it.
Then, throughout your day, practice the sacred pause. Before you reach for your phone, pause for three breaths. Before you respond to that triggering email, pause. Before you say yes to another commitment, pause. Before you order that second drink or third slice of pizza, pause. Not to judge or restrict yourself, but to create space for conscious choice.
Here's what's really powerful: start saying no to one thing each day. One small thing. Maybe it's scrolling social media during lunch. Maybe it's that extra cup of coffee. Maybe it's agreeing to plans you don't actually want. Practice the art of gentle refusal.
And pay attention to your consumption patterns, right? Notice when you're eating, shopping, or binge-watching from a place of filling some inner emptiness versus genuine enjoyment. There's a huge difference, and temperance helps you feel it.
Most more to the point, practice emotional temperance. When someone pushes your buttons, instead of immediately reacting, breathe into your belly and ask yourself: 'What would love do here?' Not fake love or people-pleasing love, but real, grounded love that includes healthy boundaries. Trust me on this one. It changes everything.
When Temperance shows up in your reading, life is asking you to find your center. You might be in a phase where you're either pushing too hard or not engaging enough, and this card is calling you back to balance. Know what I mean?
This isn't about becoming boring or playing it safe. It's about trusting the natural rhythm of your life enough to stop forcing outcomes. Maybe you've been trying to rush a relationship that needs time to unfold. Maybe you've been avoiding a difficult conversation that actually needs to happen. Temperance shows you the middle way.
If you've been feeling scattered or overwhelmed, this card is medicine. It's saying: slow down, breathe deeper, trust the process. Your soul is asking for more spaciousness, more presence, more quality time with yourself and the people you love.
Sometimes Temperance appears when you're on the verge of a breakthrough, and it's reminding you not to abandon the path right before the destination. Keep showing up. Keep doing the work. But do it with patience and trust rather than desperation or force. The timing is perfect, even when it doesn't feel like it. Seriously.
Where in my life am I trying to force outcomes instead of trusting the natural flow?
What would change if I believed that 'enough' was actually enough?
How can I practice saying no with love instead of guilt or resentment?
