The ghost of tomorrow’s fear, stealing the peace of today.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I breathe into this moment and find my peace in what is real"
Look, I've sat with thousands of people over thirty years, and here's what I've learned: anxiety isn't the enemy. I know that sounds crazy when you're in the middle of a panic attack or when your mind won't stop racing at 3 AM, but hear me out.
Anxiety is actually your system trying to protect you. It's like having an overzealous security guard in your brain who sees danger everywhere. The thing is, this guard was trained for a different world. Know what I mean? Your nervous system still thinks you might get eaten by a saber-tooth tiger, but instead you're worried about that text you sent three hours ago or whether you'll have enough money for retirement.
Here's the thing though: anxiety lives in time that doesn't exist. Think about it. When you're anxious, you're either replaying something that already happened or rehearsing for something that might happen. But you're never anxious about what's actually happening right now. Wild, right?
I remember this client, Sarah, who came to me absolutely wrecked with anxiety about her daughter going to college. She was spending months in advance grieving this loss, missing all the beautiful moments they still had together. When I asked her, 'What's wrong right now, in this exact moment?' she looked around my office and said, 'Nothing. Right now, nothing's wrong.' That's when it clicked for her.
But here's what's interesting about spiritual anxiety specifically. Sometimes when you start opening up psychically or diving deeper into spiritual work, your sensitivity increases. You might start picking up on other people's emotions, feeling the collective anxiety of the world, or getting overwhelmed by energy you can't quite place. This isn't a sign you're doing something wrong. It's actually a sign you're becoming more aware.
The key is learning to differentiate between what's yours and what's not. Truth is, most of what we worry about never happens. And the stuff that does happen? We handle it way better than we thought we would. But anxiety doesn't want you to remember that. It wants to keep you small, keep you preparing for disasters that exist mostly in your imagination.
Honestly, the most radical thing you can do with anxiety is to get present. I mean really present. Feel your feet on the ground. Notice the temperature of the air on your skin. Listen to the actual sounds around you, not the soundtrack your mind is playing. Are you with me?
There's this beautiful teaching from the mystics: the only moment that exists is this one. Past is memory, future is imagination. But this breath, this heartbeat, this moment of reading these words... this is real. This is where your power lives.
Sometimes anxiety is also trying to tell you something legitimate. Maybe you need to make a change, set a boundary, or pay attention to your intuition. But you can't hear that guidance when you're caught in the spin cycle of worry. You need to get still first.
The other thing about anxiety is that it often comes with shame. Like, you think you should be able to just think your way out of it or that having anxiety means you're spiritually weak somehow. Seriously, throw that garbage out. Some of the most spiritually evolved people I know have dealt with anxiety. It doesn't disqualify you from growth or wisdom or connection to the divine.
What helps is remembering that thoughts aren't facts. That feeling in your chest, that racing mind, that sense of impending doom... it's information, but it's not truth. Your anxiety might be screaming that everything's falling apart, but look around. Are you breathing? Do you have shelter? Is there love in your life? Most of the time, the present moment is actually okay.
And here's something beautiful: when you start working with anxiety instead of against it, it often becomes a teacher. It shows you where you're not trusting life, where you're trying to control outcomes that aren't yours to control. It points you back to surrender, back to faith, back to the knowing that you're held by something bigger than your fears.
When anxiety hits, the first thing is to literally come back to your body. I mean this. Put both feet flat on the floor and feel the connection. Take three deep breaths and with each exhale, let your shoulders drop. This isn't woo-woo stuff, it's nervous system science.
Try the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique: name five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, one thing you can taste. This pulls you out of the future-tripping and into the now.
Here's something I do with my own anxiety: I actually talk to it. I know, sounds weird, but it works. I say, 'Hey anxiety, I see you. What are you trying to protect me from?' Sometimes just acknowledging it instead of fighting it helps it calm down. Think about that.
Create what I call an 'anxiety toolkit.' Maybe it's a playlist that grounds you, essential oils that calm your nervous system, or a mantra that brings you back to center. Have it ready before you need it. When you're in the middle of panic, you can't think clearly enough to figure out what helps.
And practice presence when you're not anxious. Seriously. Don't wait for the storm to learn how to find your anchor. Spend time each day just being present with whatever's happening. Could be washing dishes, could be petting your cat, could be feeling the sun on your face. Train your mind to come home to now.
When this card shows up, it's usually because anxiety has been running the show and it's time to remember your power. Your guides are saying: come back to now. Stop rehearsing for disasters that may never come and missing the life that's actually happening.
This card often appears when you're in a transition or facing uncertainty. That's natural. Change activates our survival instincts. But you're being reminded that you've navigated uncertainty before and you'll work through it again. You're more resilient than your anxiety wants you to believe.
Sometimes this card comes up when you're picking up on collective anxiety or other people's fear. It's a reminder to check: is this mine? And if it's not, you can hand it back. You don't have to carry the world's worry.
There might also be a message here about slowing down. Anxiety often increases when we're moving too fast, trying to control too much, or not giving ourselves enough space to breathe. Your soul is asking for some gentleness.
If you've been avoiding something because of anxiety, this card is encouragement that you can feel the fear and take the step anyway. Not recklessly, but with presence and trust. The path forward becomes clear when you stop future-tripping and start listening to your inner wisdom.
What stories is my anxiety telling me, and which ones are actually true right now?
When I feel completely present and grounded, what does that feel like in my body?
