The Teaching

Presence is not some airy-fairy spiritual buzzword. It’s the raw, unedited experience of being here, now. It’s the fierce and tender reality of inhabiting your body, your mind, your senses, without distraction, without running from what is. Presence means dropping the endless mental chatter and the spiritual bypassing that tries to smooth over discomfort with empty positivity.

In the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu writes,

“Be still like a mountain and flow like a great river.”
This paradox points directly to presence: the groundedness of being fully here, like a mountain, combined with the fluidity of responding moment-to-moment like a river. Presence is both stillness and movement, awareness and engagement. It is not about escaping the world but meeting it head-on.

From the perspective of Advaita Vedanta, presence is the recognition that the separate self you cling to is an illusion. The Brahman, the ultimate reality, is always here and now, unchanging and infinite. When you rest in presence, you momentarily dissolve the false boundaries between you and the world. Yet, this is not about becoming some detached observer or spiritual robot. Presence is raw, embodied, and often messy.

The Bhagavad Gita teaches us about the importance of being present in our actions:

“Be steadfast in yoga, O Arjuna. Perform your duty and abandon all attachment to success or failure. Such evenness of mind is called yoga.”
Presence means being fully engaged in what you are doing without being hijacked by the outcome. It means your attention is not in the future or the past but fully anchored in the work, the conversation, the breath you have right now.

Buddhist teachings highlight that presence is the foundation of mindfulness. The Buddha said,

“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.”
But he also warned against using mindfulness as a spiritual escape hatch. Presence involves facing the rawness of experience, including pain, fear, and discomfort. It’s a willingness to be with whatever arises instead of numbing out or distracting yourself.

Here’s a real-life example: Imagine you’re in a heated argument with someone you love. Your mind is spinning with defense, blame, and self-justification. Presence in this moment means dropping the mental noise, the stories about who’s right or wrong, and tuning into what’s actually happening. What are you feeling in your body? What is the other person actually saying beyond their words? Can you breathe and ground yourself instead of reacting? This kind of presence is fierce because it requires courage to stay with intensity without fleeing or attacking.

Presence is also a radical act of self-love and compassion. When you are fully present with yourself, you see your pain and your beauty without judgment. You stop running from your shadow and start embracing your whole self. Presence is the antidote to the cultural epidemic of distraction, avoidance, and spiritual bypassing.

In my 30+ years with Amma, I’ve seen that presence is the doorway to real transformation. It’s not some high mystical state but the simple, sometimes brutal, act of showing up for yourself and life exactly as it is. Presence is the foundation for love, wisdom, and true freedom.

How to Embody This Teaching

Begin your day with a simple presence practice. Sit quietly for 5 minutes and focus on your breath. When your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the sensation of breathing. Notice any resistance or discomfort without trying to fix it. This is presence, noticing what is without needing to change it.

Throughout your day, pause regularly to check in with yourself. Are you lost in thought, worried about the future, or ruminating on the past? Bring your attention back to your senses, what do you see, hear, feel right now? This will train your mind to return to presence, even in challenging moments.

When difficult emotions arise, instead of pushing them away or distracting yourself, lean into them with curiosity. Ask yourself: What is this feeling trying to show me? Can I hold space for it without judgment or story? Presence is not about perfection but about courageous honesty.

When This Card Appears

When the Presence card appears in your reading, it’s a call to wake up from autopilot and truly inhabit your life. It’s an invitation to stop running from what is uncomfortable or inconvenient and to meet each moment with full awareness and acceptance. Presence asks you to be honest with yourself about where you are, emotionally, mentally, and physically, without spiritual bypassing or denial.

This card signals a time to cultivate groundedness and clear-sightedness. You may be tempted to escape into distractions or chase future goals to avoid the present moment, but Presence reminds you that true power and peace only exist here and now. Embrace what is, no matter how messy or painful, and you will find a deep well of strength and clarity.
