The terrifying free-fall into the arms of grace.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I release the reins and trust the intelligence of the universe. I am held.""
Here's the thing about trust: it's not some fluffy spiritual concept you paste on a vision board. It's the most radical act you can perform in a world that's constantly telling you to grip tighter, control more, plan harder. Trust is rebellion against fear. Know what I mean?
I've been doing this work for thirty years, and I can tell you that the people who transform the fastest are the ones who learn to let go. Not the ones with the most willpower or the biggest plans. The surrenderers. The ones who finally exhale and say, "Okay, universe. Show me."
Look, we're conditioned to believe that if we're not steering the ship, it's going to crash into the rocks. That's ego talking. That's the part of you that thinks it's responsible for making the sun rise every morning. Wild, right? The truth is, there's an intelligence moving through everything that's way bigger and way smarter than your worried little mind.
In Bhakti Yoga, they call it devotion. Complete surrender to the divine. But here's what's interesting: it's not about becoming passive or checked out. It's about aligning with something vast and beautiful that's already happening. Think about that. The same force that spins galaxies and grows trees from tiny seeds is flowing through your life right now.
The Taoists have this beautiful concept called wu wei. Action through non-action. It's like being a river instead of a bulldozer. Water doesn't fight the scene; it finds the natural path and follows it. And look what water creates over time. Canyons. Valleys. Entire ecosystems. All through surrender.
Honestly, most of our suffering comes from trying to force outcomes that aren't meant for us. We're pushing doors that are meant to be pulled, swimming upstream when the current wants to carry us somewhere beautiful. Trust is learning to read the signs. Learning to feel the flow.
But let's be real for a minute. Trust isn't always easy. Sometimes it feels like jumping off a cliff blindfolded. I get it. We've all been burned. We've all had experiences that taught us the world isn't safe, that people let us down, that life is unpredictable and sometimes cruel. Those wounds are real. They matter.
But here's what I've learned: trust isn't about believing everything will work out exactly how you want it to. It's about knowing that whatever happens, you're held by something bigger than your individual will. That there's a sacred intelligence weaving through all of it, even the hard parts. Especially the hard parts.
I remember this client who came to me completely burned out from trying to control her career, her relationships, her family. She was exhausted from being the director of everyone's movie. When she finally learned to trust, to step back and let life breathe, everything started flowing differently. Not perfectly, but naturally. Like a garden that's been overwatered finally getting the right amount of rain.
Trust is a practice. Some days you'll nail it. Other days you'll catch yourself white-knuckling again, trying to micromanage the universe. That's normal. That's human. The practice is noticing when you're doing it and consciously choosing to release your grip.
Are you with me? Because this is where it gets really interesting. When you trust, you're not giving up your power. You're aligning with true power. The power that moves mountains. The power that heals. The power that creates miracles out of what looked like disasters.
Right now, somewhere in your life, you're being called to let go. To stop pushing so hard. To release the reins and see what wants to emerge when you're not forcing it. That's not weakness. That's wisdom. That's faith in action.
Start small. Trust doesn't have to be this huge cosmic leap. Begin with little releases throughout your day. When you're stuck in traffic, instead of fuming about being late, take three deep breaths and say, "I trust this timing." When a plan falls through, pause before launching into problem-solving mode and ask, "What's trying to happen here?"
Create a daily surrender ritual. Each morning, place your hands on your heart and consciously release one thing you've been trying to control. It might be how someone responds to you, when a project will be finished, or what your future looks like. Literally say out loud: "I release my need to control [whatever it is] and I trust the flow."
Practice feeling support. Lie on the ground for five minutes every day. Feel the earth holding you. Feel gravity taking care of you without any effort on your part. This is physical training for spiritual trust. Your body is learning what it feels like to be held.
When you catch yourself in anxiety or control mode, get curious instead of judgmental. Ask yourself: "What am I afraid will happen if I don't control this?" Usually the fear is about not being okay, not being loved, not being safe. Then ask: "How can I trust that I'll be okay no matter what happens?" Listen for the answer. It's there.
End each day by listing three things that worked out without your direct control. The parking space that opened up. The helpful stranger. The solution that came when you stopped forcing it. Train your brain to notice how supported you actually are.
When Trust appears in your reading, the universe is asking you to release your death grip on how you think things should go. You've been working so hard to control outcomes that you're exhausted, aren't you? This card is permission to exhale. To step back. To let life breathe.
Look at what you're trying to force right now. Where are you pushing uphill? Where are you swimming against the current? Trust is showing up to remind you that there's another way. A gentler way. A way that works with natural flow instead of against it.
This card often appears when you're on the verge of a breakthrough, but your fear is blocking it. You're so close to something beautiful, but you're trying to control exactly how it arrives. Trust is saying: release the "how" and focus on the "what." Get clear on what you want to experience, then let the universe surprise you with the delivery method.
If you've been feeling spiritually disconnected, Trust is your invitation back home. You've been trying to manage life from your head, but your heart knows the way. This card is asking you to drop back into faith. Into the knowing that you're being guided, even when you can't see the whole path.
Sometimes Trust appears when you're being called to make a leap. To quit the job, move to the new city, end the relationship, start the project. The leap that scares you and excites you at the same time. This card is saying: the net will appear. Jump.
Where in my life am I trying to force outcomes instead of allowing natural flow?
What would I do differently if I truly trusted that I'm being guided and supported?
What am I afraid will happen if I let go of control, and how can I find peace with that possibility?
