The hand that gives, gathers.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I release what I no longer need, and I trust that in letting go, I make space for the new.""
We are a culture of clutter. We accumulate possessions, we accumulate beliefs, we accumulate identities. We are terrified of empty space. We fill our homes, our minds, and our lives with stuff, hoping that it will make us feel safe, secure, happy. But the spiritual path is a path of subtraction, not addition. It is the path of letting go, of simplifying, of creating space. The practice of “Giveaways” is not about decluttering your closet. It is about decluttering your soul. It is the practice of recognizing that your true wealth is not in what you have, but in what you are willing to release.
In the Buddhist tradition, attachment (*upadana*) is seen as one of the primary causes of suffering. We suffer because we cling to things, to possessions, to people, to ideas, to our own sense of self. We believe that these things will bring us happiness, and we are terrified of losing them. The practice of letting go is a direct antidote to the poison of attachment.
The Buddha taught that the path to liberation is the path of non-attachment. This does not mean that you cannot enjoy the things of the world. It means that you do not cling to them. You hold them lightly. You enjoy them while they are here, and you let them go when it is time for them to go.
A “giveaway” is a practical and powerful way to practice the art of non-attachment. As you go through your possessions, you are not just decluttering your home; you are examining your attachments. What are you holding onto? Why are you holding onto it? What are you afraid will happen if you let it go? Each item you release is a small act of liberation. It is a declaration that your security does not lie in your possessions, but in the boundless, open, and unattached nature of your own mind.
Taoism is a philosophy of simplicity, of naturalness, of flowing with the Tao. The Taoist sage is an unburdened traveler. They carry only what they need. They are not weighed down by excessive possessions, by complicated plans, by a heavy sense of self. They travel light, so that they can be free to move with the ever-changing flow of the Tao.
The Tao Te Ching (Chapter 9) says, “Fill your bowl to the brim and it will spill. Keep sharpening your knife and it will blunt. Chase after money and security and your heart will never unclench. Care about people’s approval and you will be their prisoner. Do your work, then step back. The only path to serenity.”
A giveaway is a way of “stepping back.” It is a way of unburdening yourself, of simplifying your life, of creating the space for serenity. The more you have, the more you have to worry about, the more you have to protect, the more you have to manage. The less you have, the freer you are. To practice the art of the giveaway is to choose freedom over security, simplicity over complexity, and the unburdened joy of the traveler over the anxious burden of the owner.
There is a growing movement of people who are choosing to live with less. One of the most well-known examples is Dave Bruno, who started the “100 Thing Challenge,” a personal challenge to live with only 100 personal possessions. He documented his journey in a book and a blog, and he inspired thousands of people to simplify their own lives.
For most of us, the idea of living with only 100 things is extreme. But the principle behind it is deep. It is the recognition that our possessions often end up possessing us. They take up our time, our energy, our attention. They create a subtle but pervasive sense of anxiety. The practice of a giveaway is not about deprivation; it is about liberation. It is about consciously choosing what is truly essential, what truly brings us joy, and letting go of the rest.
I once worked with a woman who was a compulsive shopper. Her home was filled with clothes she never wore, with gadgets she never used, with books she never read. She was drowning in her own stuff. I challenged her to do a giveaway. I told her to go through her closet and to fill one bag with clothes to donate. She was terrified. Each item was a security blanket, a fantasy, a promise of a different life. But she did it. And as she let go of the clothes, she also let go of the fantasies, the anxieties, the self-deceptions that were attached to them. She didn’t just clean out her closet; she cleaned out her soul.
This card is an invitation to lighten your load. It is a call to examine your attachments, to question your needs, to simplify your life. What are you holding onto that is no longer serving you? What could you release to make space for something new? The hand that gives, gathers. Let go. And see what comes.
This is a simple but powerful practice of a “giveaway” ritual.
1. **Choose one small area of your home to start with.** It could be a single drawer, a shelf, or a corner of your closet. Don’t try to tackle your whole house at once. Start small. 2. **Go through each item in that area, one by one.** For each item, ask yourself: “Have I used this in the last year? Do I truly love it? Does it bring me joy?” 3. **Be honest with yourself.** If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go. 4. **Create three piles:** a “keep” pile, a “donate” pile, and a “trash” pile. 5. **As you place an item in the “donate” pile, do so with a sense of gratitude and release.** Thank the item for the service it has provided. Wish it well on its journey. See it as a gift that you are now passing on to someone else. 6. **When you are finished, immediately take the “donate” pile to a local charity or thrift store.** Don’t let it sit in your car for weeks. Complete the act of letting go. 7. **Take a moment to enjoy the empty space you have created.** Feel the lightness, the clarity, the freedom. This is the reward of the giveaway.
This practice is not about getting rid of your stuff. It is about creating a more conscious and intentional relationship with the things you choose to keep. It is about choosing quality over quantity, joy over clutter, and freedom over attachment.
When the Giveaways card appears, it is a clear sign that it is time to let go of something. You are being weighed down by an excess of something, it could be possessions, it could be responsibilities, it could be old beliefs, it could be a toxic relationship. This card is a call to simplify, to unburden yourself, to create space in your life for the new.
This is a time for a spiritual spring cleaning. What are you holding onto that is no longer serving your highest good? What are you clinging to out of fear, out of habit, out of a false sense of security? The Giveaways card is an invitation to a radical act of trust. It is the trust that in letting go of what you have, you make space for what you truly need. It is the trust that the universe will provide. Let go. And be free.
