The Teaching

Look, I've been keeping journals for decades, and here's what I've discovered: your journal isn't just a book. It's a sacred container for your soul's most honest conversations with itself. Know what I mean?

Here's the thing about journaling that most people miss. They think it's about recording events, like some kind of spiritual Instagram. But honestly? Real journaling is about creating space for the messy, contradictory, beautiful chaos that lives inside you. It's where you get to meet yourself without the mask.

I remember this one client who came to me completely stuck. She was living what looked like a perfect life from the outside, but inside she felt like she was drowning. 'I don't even know who I am anymore,' she told me. Sound familiar? That's when I introduced her to what I call 'soul journaling.' Not the gratitude lists (though those are nice). Not the goal-setting exercises. The raw, unfiltered truth-telling kind.

Truth is, your journal becomes a mirror for your inner world. And sometimes that mirror shows you things you'd rather not see. The petty jealousies. The secret fears. The parts of yourself that don't match your spiritual self-image. But here's what's beautiful about this process: when you write it down, you're not becoming those things. You're witnessing them. Are you with me?

Think about it this way. Every emotion, every thought, every contradiction that flows onto those pages is information. It's your psyche trying to tell you something important. Maybe that anger you feel guilty about is actually pointing to a boundary that needs setting. Maybe that sadness you keep pushing down is grief that wants to be honored. Your journal becomes this safe space where all parts of you get to have a voice.

But here's what's really wild: the act of writing itself is life-changing. There's something about moving your thoughts from the swirling chaos of your mind onto the solid reality of paper that creates distance. Perspective. You start to see patterns you never noticed before. You begin to understand the stories you've been telling yourself, some helpful, some... well, not so much.

I've seen people heal decades-old wounds through journaling. Not because they wrote pretty things or positive affirmations (though those have their place). Because they finally gave their pain a voice. They honored their confusion. They stopped trying to be spiritually perfect and started being spiritually honest.

And here's something interesting: your journal doesn't judge. It doesn't try to fix you or give you advice. It just holds space. In a world that's constantly telling you how to feel, what to think, how to be better, your journal is this radical act of acceptance. You get to be exactly who you are in that moment, messy feelings and all.

The non-duality aspect is huge here too. Western culture loves to split things into good and bad, spiritual and unspiritual, light and shadow. But your journal shows you the truth: you contain multitudes. You can be grateful and angry in the same breath. Loving and frustrated with the same person. Holy and human at the exact same time. Seriously.

Look, I'm not going to lie to you. Sometimes journaling brings up stuff that's uncomfortable. You might discover you're holding onto resentments you thought you'd released. You might realize you've been people-pleasing when you thought you were being kind. But that awareness? That's the beginning of real freedom. You can't heal what you won't acknowledge, right?

Your journal becomes this living record of your spiritual evolution. Not the sanitized version you might share with others, but the real deal. The questions, the doubts, the breakthroughs, the setbacks. It's all sacred because it's all you. And you, my friend, are worthy of being witnessed completely.

How to Embody This Teaching

Here's how to turn journaling into a sacred practice instead of just another task on your to-do list.

First, create ritual around it. I'm not talking about anything fancy. Maybe it's lighting a candle, brewing your favorite tea, or sitting in that one spot where the morning light hits just right. The key is consistency. Your soul learns to recognize these signals and starts to open before you even pick up your pen.

Now, here's the crucial part: write three pages of stream-of-consciousness every morning before you do anything else. No editing, no censoring, no worrying about grammar or making sense. Julia Cameron calls this 'morning pages,' and honestly? It's pure magic. Just dump everything that's swirling in your mind onto paper. The grocery list, the weird dream, the anxiety about that conversation you need to have. All of it.

But here's what I've learned after years of this practice: don't just write about your day. Write to your day. Ask questions. 'What do I need to know right now?' 'Where am I holding tension?' 'What wants to be expressed through me today?' Then listen. The answers will come, sometimes in ways that surprise you.

And please, resist the urge to go back and read what you wrote immediately. Let it sit. Come back to it later, maybe weeks later, with fresh eyes. You'll be amazed at the wisdom that was flowing through you when you weren't trying to be wise. Truth is, your soul knows things your mind hasn't figured out yet.

When This Card Appears

When the Journal card shows up in your reading, it's time for some serious soul excavation. Your inner world is asking for attention, and honestly? You've probably been avoiding the conversation.

This card often appears when you're at a crossroads, feeling confused about a situation, or sensing that something needs to shift but you're not sure what. It's your soul's way of saying, 'Hey, the answers you're looking for aren't out there. They're in here, waiting to be discovered.'

Maybe you've been so busy taking care of everyone else that you've lost touch with your own inner scene. Or perhaps you're facing a decision and your mind is spinning with pros and cons, but you haven't checked in with your heart. The Journal card is an invitation to get curious about your inner world instead of trying to figure everything out intellectually.

This card can also show up when you're ready to heal old patterns or release stories that no longer serve you. But here's the thing: healing requires witnessing first. You can't transform what you won't acknowledge. Your journal becomes the sacred space where you can explore these patterns with compassion and honesty.

If you've been struggling with conflicting emotions or feeling like you 'should' feel differently than you do, this card is permission to honor all parts of your experience. Your journal doesn't need you to be spiritually perfect. It needs you to be real.
