Hold lightly, let go freely, freedom lives in the flow.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I trust the flow of life, catching what serves and releasing with love"
You know how a fisherman works, right? There's this beautiful rhythm to it. Cast the line, wait with patience, feel the tug, reel it in with care. But here's the thing that most people miss: the best fishermen know when to keep their catch and when to let it go. They're not attached to every fish they hook. Some are too small, some aren't what they need, and some... well, some are just meant to swim free.
Life works the same way, and honestly, this is one of the hardest lessons I've learned in my 30 years of practice. We spend so much energy trying to hold onto everything that comes our way. That relationship that's run its course. The job that no longer fits. The old version of ourselves we've outgrown. The anger from that argument last week. Know what I mean?
But here's what's interesting: the tighter we grip, the more we suffer. It's like trying to hold water in cupped hands. The harder you squeeze, the faster it slips through your fingers. Truth is, everything in this universe is in constant motion. Everything changes. Everything flows. Fighting that flow is like swimming upstream against a river... you'll exhaust yourself and get nowhere.
I've seen this pattern thousands of times in readings. Someone comes to me desperately clinging to something that clearly wants to leave their life. A partner who's checked out emotionally. A career path that feels like wearing shoes three sizes too small. Old grief that's become more familiar than healing. And they're suffering because they think letting go means losing something precious.
Look, I get it. We're conditioned to believe that holding on equals love, that releasing equals giving up. But that's backwards thinking. Real love, real wisdom, knows when to catch and when to release. Think about a mother bird teaching her babies to fly. She doesn't cling to them in the nest forever. She loves them enough to let them discover their wings.
This is what the Taoists call wu-wei... action through non-action, strength through softness. It's like being water: flowing around obstacles instead of crashing against them, finding the path of least resistance without losing power. Water doesn't fight the rocks in the stream. It dances with them, shapes them over time, and keeps moving toward the ocean.
Here's something I've noticed: when we practice catch and release in one area of our lives, it starts spreading everywhere. You begin to hold your opinions more lightly. You stop taking other people's moods so personally. You can feel anger arise and let it pass through you like weather instead of setting up camp in the storm.
But this doesn't mean becoming passive or checked out. Are you with me? This is about conscious choice, not unconscious drift. You're actively participating in life, fully engaged, but you're not white-knuckling the steering wheel. You're dancing with what shows up instead of wrestling it to the ground.
The beautiful thing about this practice is that it creates space. Space for new experiences to enter. Space for relationships to breathe and evolve. Space for creativity to flow. When your hands aren't full of yesterday's catches, you're free to receive today's gifts.
Seriously, some of my most deep spiritual breakthroughs have come from releasing things I thought I couldn't live without. That toxic friendship I finally walked away from? It opened space for deeper, more authentic connections. The business idea I let go of? It led me to work that actually aligned with my soul's purpose.
Non-attachment isn't about not caring. It's about caring so much that you want what's best for everyone involved, even if that means letting go. It's loving with open hands instead of closed fists.
Start small with this practice. Pick something minor you've been holding too tightly. Maybe it's a grudge against your neighbor, or perfectionist expectations about your morning routine, or attachment to how your teenager should behave. Something that creates tension when you think about it.
Here's what I want you to do: Hold that situation in your mind like you're cradling a small bird. Feel the weight of it, the texture, the temperature. Now imagine slowly opening your hands. You're not throwing the bird away or rejecting it. You're simply creating space around it, letting it be what it is without your control.
Practice this visualization daily. Notice where your body holds tension around this issue. Breathe into those tight spots and consciously soften. Say to yourself: 'I can care about this without controlling it. I can love this without owning it.'
Throughout your day, catch yourself in moments of gripping. When you're stuck in traffic, when someone disagrees with you, when plans change unexpectedly. These are perfect opportunities to practice wu-wei. Instead of tensing up and pushing against reality, see if you can flow with it. Ask yourself: 'How can I work with this instead of against it?'
Keep a catch and release journal. At the end of each day, write down one thing you caught (received, experienced, learned) and one thing you released (let go of, forgave, accepted). This trains your mind to notice the natural rhythm of receiving and releasing that's already happening in your life.
When this card appears, it's time to examine what you're gripping too tightly. The universe is asking you to practice the sacred art of non-attachment. Look at your current situation with fresh eyes. What are you trying to control that wants to flow? What relationship, outcome, or expectation are you white-knuckling?
This card often shows up when you're at a crossroads, especially around letting go of something that once served you but no longer fits. It might be a job, a relationship pattern, an old identity, or even a way of thinking about yourself. The energy wants to shift, but your fear of loss is creating resistance.
Here's the thing: this card is actually about trust. Trust that what's meant for you won't require force to stay. Trust that releasing what doesn't serve creates space for what does. Trust that you can love deeply while holding lightly.
Pay attention to areas where you feel tension, frustration, or the need to convince or control. These are your teachers right now. The card is inviting you to experiment with a different approach... one that honors the natural flow of life while staying engaged and caring. You're being called to master the delicate dance between effort and surrender.
