The Teaching

Here's the thing about flexibility that most people miss completely. They think it's about being wishy-washy, giving in, or having no backbone. But honestly? True flexibility is one of the most courageous things you can do. It takes serious spiritual guts to bend without breaking.

I've been watching this in my sessions for decades now. The people who suffer the most are the ones who've turned rigid, who've decided that life has to look exactly one way or they're gonna fight it tooth and nail. Know what I mean? They're like oak trees in a hurricane, standing tall and proud right up until they snap.

But flexibility? That's bamboo energy, my friend. Bamboo bends so far in the wind it almost touches the ground, then springs right back up. It survives storms that destroy trees ten times its size. Think about that. The secret isn't in being the strongest... it's in being the most adaptable.

The Tao Te Ching gets this completely. Lao Tzu talks about water being the softest thing in the world, yet nothing can compete with it for overcoming the hard. Water doesn't fight the rock, it flows around it. Eventually, that gentle persistence carves the Grand Canyon. Are you with me?

Now, the Bhagavad Gita comes at this from a different angle but lands in the same place. Krishna tells Arjuna to act without attachment to results. That's flexibility in action right there. You do your best, you show up fully, but you hold your expectations lightly. You're committed to the effort, not chained to specific outcomes.

I see this play out constantly in readings. Someone comes in devastated because their life plan got derailed. Lost the job, relationship ended, health scare, whatever. They're suffering not because of what happened, but because they can't adapt to what's happening. They're fighting reality instead of dancing with it.

Truth is, flexibility isn't just a nice quality to have. It's survival. Look, life is going to throw curveballs at you. That's not a maybe, that's a guarantee. The question isn't whether change is coming... it's whether you'll be ready to flow with it when it arrives.

But here's what's interesting about real flexibility. It's not passive. You're not just getting blown around by every wind that comes along. You've got deep roots, strong core values, but your branches move freely. You know who you are, but you're willing to explore different ways of being that person.

I remember this client who'd been a high-powered executive for twenty years. Got laid off at fifty-five, thought her life was over. But instead of fighting to recreate exactly what she'd lost, she got curious. What else might be possible? Turns out, she'd always wanted to teach. Now she's running workshops for other career-changers and she's never been happier. That's flexibility in action.

From an Advaita perspective, flexibility comes naturally when you realize you're not actually the rigid story you've been telling yourself. You're consciousness itself, which is infinitely adaptable. The wave thinks it has to stay the exact same shape, but it's actually the ocean. The ocean can be any wave it wants to be.

Seriously. When you truly get that you're not your circumstances, your roles, your plans... when you connect with that unchanging awareness underneath all the changes... flexibility becomes effortless. You stop defending a false self and start flowing as your true self.

The practice isn't about becoming a doormat or abandoning your values. It's about holding everything more lightly. Your opinions, your plans, your preferences... they're all just temporary formations in the flow of life. Some will serve you, some won't. The flexible person adjusts course without losing their way.

How to Embody This Teaching

Start with your body, because that's where flexibility becomes real instead of just a nice idea. Every morning, take five minutes to stretch. Not because you're trying to become a yoga master, but because you're training yourself to move with resistance instead of against it. When you feel tension, breathe into it. When you hit your edge, respect it but don't retreat. This is flexibility training at the cellular level.

Now bring this into your daily interactions. When someone suggests a different restaurant, try saying yes instead of defending your original choice. When plans change, catch yourself before you start the internal protest. Take a breath and ask, "What might be good about this instead?" You're literally rewiring your default response from rigid to fluid.

Here's a game-changer: practice the phrase "I could be wrong about this." Use it in conversations, in your own thinking, especially when you feel absolutely certain about something. It's not about doubting yourself into paralysis. It's about staying open to new information, different perspectives, unexpected possibilities.

Keep a flexibility journal for a week. Notice when you get rigid, when you resist change, when you insist things have to be a certain way. Don't judge it, just observe it. Then notice when you bend, when you adapt, when you flow with what's happening. Notice how each approach feels in your body, in your energy. The body doesn't lie about what actually works.

When This Card Appears

When Flexible shows up in your reading, life is asking you to soften your grip. You've been holding onto something too tightly, and it's causing unnecessary suffering. Maybe it's a plan that's not working out, a relationship that's changing, or an identity that no longer fits. The universe is inviting you to bend instead of break.

This card often appears when you're at a crossroads, facing unexpected changes, or feeling stuck because things aren't going according to your script. It's not saying you need to give up your dreams or compromise your values. It's saying you need to find new ways to honor what matters most to you.

Look for opportunities to practice adaptability in small ways first. Say yes to the invitation you'd normally decline. Try the route you've never taken. Order something different from your usual. These micro-flexibilities prepare you for the bigger adaptations life might be requesting.

The card is also reminding you that flexibility is a form of wisdom. The people who thrive aren't the ones who never face challenges... they're the ones who dance with challenges instead of wrestling them to the ground. Right now, life is offering you a chance to develop this essential skill.
