The Teaching

Here's the thing about tribes. Most of us spend our whole lives trying to figure out where we belong, right? We're born into families that might not get us. We go to schools where we feel like aliens. We work jobs surrounded by people who speak a different language than our hearts. And we start thinking something's wrong with us.

But honestly? There's nothing wrong with you. You're just looking for your people.

I've been doing this work for three decades now, and I can't tell you how many times I've watched someone light up when they finally find their tribe. It's like watching someone come home to themselves. Know what I mean?

The Tao Te Ching talks about this beautiful idea: "The sage does not attempt anything very big, and thus achieves greatness." Your tribe isn't necessarily huge or famous or impressive to the outside world. Sometimes it's three people who really see you. Sometimes it's a community that shares your weird sense of humor. Sometimes it's fellow travelers on this spiritual path who don't think you're crazy for talking to your guides.

But here's what's interesting. In Advaita, we learn that separation is the grand illusion. We're all one consciousness playing at being separate beings. So why does finding your tribe matter if we're all connected anyway?

Truth is, while we're here in these bodies, having this human experience, we need reflection. We need mirrors. We need people who can see our light when we've forgotten it's there. Your tribe becomes these sacred mirrors, showing you parts of yourself you couldn't see alone.

Look, I get it. Maybe you've been burned by groups before. Maybe you trusted a community that turned toxic. Maybe you've been the outsider so long that you don't even know how to belong anymore. That's okay. Seriously. The wound of not belonging often creates the very sensitivity that helps you recognize your real people when they show up.

The beautiful thing about spiritual tribes is they're not about conformity. They're not about everyone thinking the same way or following the same rules. Real spiritual community celebrates your uniqueness while holding space for your growth. They see your shadows and love you anyway. They call you on your stuff with compassion. They cheer your victories like their own.

But here's what I've learned: you can't find your tribe from a place of desperation. When you're grasping, when you're trying to force connection, when you're changing yourself to fit in... that's not tribe. That's just another version of the old pattern that didn't serve you.

Your real tribe recognizes you because you're being authentically you. They don't need you to be smaller or bigger or different. They need you to be real. And that requires you to know yourself first. To honor your own values. To trust your own intuition about people.

Sometimes your tribe finds you when you stop looking. When you're just being yourself, doing your thing, following your joy. Other times, you have to be brave enough to show up authentically in spaces that call to you. To speak your truth and see who resonates. To risk being seen.

And here's something wild: your tribe might not look like what you expected. It might include people decades older or younger than you. It might span continents through online connections. It might be found in unexpected places... a hiking group, a bookstore, a meditation circle, even a random conversation at a coffee shop.

The key is recognizing the feeling. When you're with your people, something relaxes in your nervous system. You can breathe deeper. You laugh more easily. You feel permission to be all of who you are. There's less performing, more being. Less explaining, more understanding.

Your tribe isn't just about receiving support, though. It's about giving it too. About showing up for others the way you want to be seen. About being someone's safe harbor while they're finding their way. About creating the kind of community you've always wanted to be part of.

Think about that. We create what we seek.

How to Embody This Teaching

Start by getting clear on your own values and what authentic connection feels like to you. Spend some time journaling about the qualities you want in your spiritual family. Not surface stuff, but deep values. How do you want to feel when you're with your people?

Then, begin showing up more authentically in the spaces you already inhabit. Instead of trying to fit in, practice being yourself. Share something real in conversation. Express an opinion that matters to you. Let people see your quirky interests or spiritual practices.

Pay attention to who responds with curiosity rather than judgment. Notice who asks follow-up questions about things that light you up. These are clues about potential tribe members.

Also, become the kind of person you'd want in your own tribe. Practice deep listening. Offer support without trying to fix. Celebrate others' growth genuinely. Create space for people to be themselves around you.

Consider exploring new communities aligned with your interests... spiritual groups, creative circles, volunteer opportunities, classes that intrigue you. But go with an open heart rather than desperate energy. Go to give as much as to receive.

Most more to the point, trust the process. Your people are out there, and they're looking for you too. The more authentically you show up, the easier it becomes for the right connections to find you.

When This Card Appears

When Tribes appears in your reading, it's often signaling that a shift in your social connections is either happening or needed. You might be outgrowing old relationships that no longer serve your highest good, or you might be ready to attract more aligned connections into your life.

This card can indicate that you're being called to show up more authentically in your relationships. Maybe you've been hiding parts of yourself to fit in, and it's time to risk being seen for who you really are. The right people will celebrate your authenticity.

Sometimes Tribes appears when you're feeling isolated or disconnected, reminding you that your spiritual family is out there. It might be time to put yourself in new environments or approach existing relationships with fresh eyes.

This card can also suggest that you're ready to step into a leadership role within your community, or that you have something valuable to offer a group of seekers. Don't underestimate the healing power of your own journey and wisdom.

If you've been struggling with belonging, Tribes reminds you that the right connections will feel natural and nourishing. You don't have to work so hard to be accepted by your real people. Trust what feels expansive rather than contracting in your social world.
