Every moment offers a doorway to your truest self
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I trust my inner wisdom to guide me toward choices that honor my authentic self.""
Here's the thing about choices: we think we're making hundreds of them every day, but honestly? Most of what we call "choices" are just habits dressed up in decision-making clothes. You brush your teeth, grab coffee, check your phone... where's the actual choosing in that? It's autopilot, and that's fine for some things. But with the big stuff, the stuff that shapes who you're becoming? That's where real choice lives.
I've been reading for people for three decades now, and you know what I've noticed? The folks who feel most alive, most authentic, most at peace... they're not the ones who made perfect choices. They're the ones who made conscious choices. There's a massive difference there. Think about that.
In the Taoist tradition, there's this beautiful concept of wu wei, which basically means effortless action. It's not about forcing outcomes or overthinking every decision. It's about aligning with what's naturally wanting to emerge through you. When you're in that flow, choices don't feel heavy or stressful. They feel... obvious. Like water finding its way downhill.
But here's what's interesting: we've been taught that more options equal more freedom. Walk into any grocery store and count the cereal choices. Overwhelming, right? The truth is, too many options can actually paralyze us. We get stuck in analysis mode, weighing pros and cons until we're exhausted. Meanwhile, life is happening around us.
Real freedom isn't having infinite options. It's knowing who you are so clearly that the right choice becomes self-evident. When you're connected to your authentic self, to what I call your "original nature," decisions flow from that center. They're not coming from fear or what others expect or what you think you "should" do. They're coming from truth.
Look, I get it. Sometimes the choice is between two really good things. Sometimes it's between the lesser of two evils. Sometimes you're choosing between what's safe and what's calling to your soul. Those moments? They're not problems to solve. They're invitations to grow.
Every choice is really a choice about who you want to be in that moment. Are you choosing from love or fear? From expansion or contraction? From your authentic self or from the version of you that you think the world wants to see? Seriously. Every single choice comes down to this.
And here's something that might surprise you: the "wrong" choices often teach us more than the "right" ones. I've made some spectacular mistakes in my life, and honestly? I'm grateful for most of them. They showed me who I didn't want to be. They clarified my values. They taught me compassion for others who were struggling with their own decisions.
The spiritual path isn't about making perfect choices. It's about making choices from an increasingly clear and authentic place. Each time you choose consciousness over unconsciousness, truth over pretense, love over fear... you're not just deciding what to do. You're deciding who to become. Wild, right?
Remember: you're not stuck with any choice forever. Life is fluid. What serves you today might not serve you tomorrow, and that's okay. The goal isn't to make choices that last forever. The goal is to make choices that are true for where you are right now.
Start simple. For the next week, pause before three small decisions each day. Before you grab your usual coffee, before you take your regular route to work, before you automatically say "yes" to that invitation... just pause. Take a breath. Ask yourself: "What do I actually want right here?"
This isn't about changing everything. It's about waking up to the fact that you're choosing. Most of us sleepwalk through our days, making decisions from habit or obligation. But when you pause, even for five seconds, you create space for consciousness to enter.
Here's a practice that's changed my life: before any significant decision, I sit quietly and imagine myself one year from now. I picture the version of me that would result from Choice A, then the version that would result from Choice B. Which one feels more alive? More authentic? Which one makes my heart say "yes" instead of my head saying "should"?
And honestly? Trust your body. Your mind can rationalize anything, but your body knows truth. When you think about a choice, notice what happens in your chest, your stomach, your shoulders. Does your body open up or contract? That's ancient wisdom talking. Listen to it.
Practice saying "I don't know" when you genuinely don't know. We put so much pressure on ourselves to have instant answers. But sometimes the most powerful choice is to admit you need more information, more time, more clarity. That's not weakness. That's wisdom.
When this card shows up, it's time to wake up to the power you have in this moment. You might be facing a decision that feels overwhelming, or maybe you've been operating on autopilot for too long. Either way, the universe is asking you to step into conscious choosing.
This isn't necessarily about making a big dramatic change. Sometimes it's about recognizing that staying where you are is also a choice. Sometimes it's about choosing how you show up in situations you can't control. The power isn't always in changing your circumstances. Sometimes it's in changing your relationship to those circumstances.
Look at what's in front of you right now. What choices have you been avoiding? What decisions have you been postponing because you're waiting for perfect clarity? Here's the thing: clarity often comes through action, not before it. Sometimes you have to choose in order to discover what you really want.
This card is also a reminder that every choice is a vote for the kind of life you want to create. You're not just deciding what to do next. You're deciding who to become next. That's both the weight and the wonder of free will. Use it consciously. Choose from love when you can. Choose from wisdom when love isn't clear. But whatever you do, choose.
What choice have I been avoiding, and what's really keeping me from making it?
When I look back at my life, which choices am I most grateful for and why?
What would I choose if I knew I couldn't fail and no one would judge me?
