The heavy teacher that guides you back to love
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I let my regrets become teachers, guiding me toward authentic living.""
Look, nobody talks about this, but regret might be one of our most powerful spiritual teachers. I know, I know... sounds crazy, right? But hear me out.
Here's the thing: regret isn't punishment. It's information. It's your soul saying, "Hey, that didn't feel right, did it?" And honestly? That's sacred feedback. Think about that.
I've sat with thousands of people over thirty years, and you know what I've learned? The people who try to skip over regret, who pretend it doesn't exist or spiritually bypass it with "everything happens for a reason" platitudes... they're the ones who keep making the same mistakes. They're stuck in patterns because they won't listen to what regret is trying to teach them.
But here's what's interesting: regret isn't asking you to punish yourself. It's not asking you to live in the past. It's asking you to get honest. Really honest. About what matters to you. About who you want to be in this world.
Truth is, regret is love in disguise. It's your heart saying, "I know we can do better than this." It's compassion for yourself and others, disguised as pain. Wild, right?
I remember this guy who came to see me, carrying twenty years of regret about not being there when his father died. He was traveling for work, thought he had more time. The regret was eating him alive. But when we sat with it... really sat with it... we found something beautiful underneath. The regret was actually his love for his father, still alive, still moving through him. It was asking him to honor that love differently going forward.
See, regret has this way of clarifying what's truly important. It burns away the bullshit. Shows you your real values, not the ones you think you should have. When you feel regret about snapping at your kid, that's not your inner critic being mean. That's your love for your child, asking you to show up differently next time.
The Taoists have this beautiful understanding: everything contains its opposite. Joy contains sorrow, light contains darkness, and regret... regret contains wisdom. It contains the seeds of a more authentic life.
But here's the key, and this is where most people get stuck: you can't think your way out of regret. You can't analyze it or strategize it away. You have to feel it. All the way through. Let it move through your body like weather. Know what I mean?
I've learned to ask regret: "What are you trying to protect? What do you love so much that you're willing to hurt this badly?" Because underneath every regret is something you care deeply about. Underneath the pain of hurting someone is your capacity for love. Underneath the regret of missed opportunities is your aliveness, your desire for a full life.
Honestly, some of my deepest regrets have become my greatest teachers. They've shown me what I really value, what I'm willing to fight for, how I want to show up in the world. They've made me more compassionate, not just with others but with myself.
Here's what I want you to understand: you don't have to carry regret like a stone. You can carry it like a lantern. It can light your way forward instead of weighing you down. Are you with me?
The goal isn't to never feel regret again. That's impossible if you're really living, really risking, really loving. The goal is to let regret teach you, then release it. To let it refine you without defining you.
Seriously. Some of the most awake people I know have the deepest regrets. Because they're paying attention. They're feeling everything. They're learning from their mistakes instead of defending them.
So maybe it's time to have a different relationship with regret. Maybe it's time to see it as the fierce teacher it is, pointing you toward a life that's more aligned with who you really are.
Here's how you work with regret in a healthy way: First, stop running from it. I know it's uncomfortable, but comfort isn't the point here. Growth is.
Sit with your regret. Really sit with it. Feel where it lives in your body. Is it tight in your chest? Heavy in your stomach? Let it be there without trying to fix it or understand it right away.
Now ask yourself: "What does this regret love so much that it's willing to hurt this badly?" Because remember, regret is love in disguise. If you regret not speaking up, what do you love about truth and authenticity? If you regret hurting someone, what do you love about kindness and connection?
Write a letter to your regret. Thank it for caring so much. Thank it for showing you what matters. Then ask it: "How can I honor what you're protecting going forward?" This isn't about fixing the past. This is about learning from it.
Here's the thing: forgiveness starts with understanding. And understanding starts with listening. So listen to your regret. What's it really saying underneath all that pain?
Finally, and this is crucial... make one small change based on what you've learned. Call someone you've been avoiding. Speak up in a situation where you'd normally stay quiet. Show up differently, even in tiny ways. Action is how we honor the teaching.
Remember, you're not trying to eliminate regret from your life. You're trying to let it guide you toward a more authentic way of being. There's a difference, and it matters.
When Regret shows up in your reading, it's time to stop running from that heavy feeling and start listening to what it's trying to teach you. This isn't about wallowing or self-punishment. This is about receiving one of life's most powerful teachings.
Your regret is asking you to get honest about what really matters to you. It's showing you where you've been out of alignment with your deepest values. That pain you're feeling? It's actually love in disguise, pointing you toward a more authentic way of living.
This card says: stop defending your past choices and start learning from them. Stop trying to think your way out of this feeling and start letting it move through you. There's wisdom in that discomfort, guidance in that grief.
Look at what you regret most deeply right now. Underneath that pain is something you love fiercely, something you want to honor going forward. Your regret isn't asking you to change the past... it's asking you to change how you show up from now on.
The appearance of this card means it's time to have a different relationship with your mistakes. Time to let them teach you instead of defining you. Time to carry regret like a lantern instead of a stone, lighting your way toward a life that's more aligned with who you really are.
