When resistance becomes the very chain that binds you
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I release the battles that drain me and flow with the current of life.""
Here's the thing about fighting: most of the battles we wage aren't actually happening in the world around us. They're happening inside our heads, and honestly? We're usually fighting ourselves. Know what I mean?
I've sat with thousands of people over the years, and I can tell you this: the ones who suffer most aren't necessarily dealing with the worst circumstances. They're the ones fighting reality tooth and nail. The ones who've turned life into a constant wrestling match with what is.
Look, I get it. Fighting feels productive. It feels like you're doing something. But here's what's interesting: every time you fight against what's already here, you're actually strengthening it. You're giving it more energy, more attention, more power over you. Think about that. The very thing you're trying to defeat becomes stronger because of your resistance to it.
The Tao Te Ching talks about water, right? Water doesn't fight the rock. It flows around it, and eventually, the rock changes shape. Water wins not by fighting, but by being soft, yielding, persistent. Wild, right?
But we humans? We love our fights. We fight our emotions: "I shouldn't feel angry." We fight our circumstances: "This shouldn't be happening." We fight our thoughts: "I shouldn't think this way." We even fight our own fighting: "I shouldn't be so resistant." It's fights all the way down.
Truth is, the moment you stop fighting something, it loses its grip on you. I'm not talking about becoming passive or giving up on your dreams. I'm talking about that internal wrestling match where you're constantly at war with reality.
Here's what I've learned in my own practice: every fight is really a fight with impermanence. We're fighting the fact that things change, that we can't control outcomes, that life doesn't follow our script. But impermanence isn't the enemy. It's actually what makes everything possible, including healing, growth, and transformation.
When my teacher used to talk about surrender, I thought it meant becoming a doormat. Seriously. I thought spiritual people were supposed to just let life walk all over them. But that's not it at all. Real surrender is more like martial arts. You use the energy that's already moving instead of opposing it.
The spiritual fight isn't about conquering anything. It's about recognizing that the fighter and the thing being fought are both arising in the same consciousness. They're both you. When you see that clearly, the whole dynamic shifts. You stop being at war with yourself.
Are you with me? This doesn't mean you don't take action in the world. You absolutely do. But you act from clarity instead of reactivity. You respond instead of fighting. You move with life instead of against it.
The deepest teaching here is that what you resist persists, and what you embrace transforms. Every single thing you're fighting right now is asking to be met with presence, not opposition. Your anxiety, your grief, your anger, your fear – they're not enemies to be defeated. They're energies asking to be witnessed and allowed to move through you.
Honestly, some of the most deep shifts I've seen in my sessions happen when someone finally stops fighting their depression and starts getting curious about it instead. Or when they stop fighting their anger and start feeling the power underneath it. Fighting keeps everything frozen. Acceptance allows movement.
Here's the radical truth: there's nothing to fight. Everything is already arising perfectly within consciousness, including your resistance to it. Even your fighting is perfect. But once you see this, you naturally begin to relax into what's actually happening instead of what you think should be happening.
Start small with this one. Pick something you're fighting right now – maybe it's feeling tired, or frustrated with someone, or worried about money. Instead of trying to fix it or push it away, just say: "Okay, you're here. I see you."
Notice what happens in your body when you stop fighting. Seriously, pay attention. There's usually this subtle release, like you've been holding your breath and finally let it go. That's the feeling of resistance dissolving.
Here's a simple practice: whenever you catch yourself in fight mode, pause and ask: "What would it be like if I didn't resist this?" Don't answer with your mind. Feel it in your body. What would it actually feel like to let this experience be exactly as it is?
Try this with physical sensations first. Got a headache? Instead of immediately reaching for pills (though do that too if you need to), spend a minute just being present with the sensation without trying to change it. Notice how the quality of the pain shifts when you're not fighting it.
Then move to emotions. When anxiety shows up, instead of analyzing it or trying to calm down, just let it be there. Breathe with it. You might be surprised by how quickly it moves through when you're not wrestling with it.
The key is starting with things that feel manageable. Don't try to stop fighting everything at once. That's just another form of fighting. Pick one small thing each day and practice meeting it with curiosity instead of resistance.
When this card appears, it's usually showing you where you're exhausting yourself with unnecessary battles. Look at what you're fighting right now. Chances are, at least some of those fights are with things that can't actually be fought – like the weather, other people's choices, or what already happened yesterday.
This card isn't telling you to become a pushover. It's pointing to the fights that are draining your energy without creating any real change. The fights with your own emotions, your circumstances, your thoughts, your body's natural rhythms.
Pay attention to where you're using force when flow would work better. Where are you pushing against doors that are meant to be pulled? Sometimes this card shows up when you're fighting so hard for something that you can't see the easier path right next to you.
If you're in the middle of external conflict, this card suggests looking at your internal relationship to it. Are you fighting from reactivity or responding from clarity? There's a huge difference, and it affects everything about how the situation unfolds.
This card often appears when it's time to try a completely different approach. Instead of more effort, try less. Instead of more control, try more trust. Instead of more pushing, try more allowing. The solution might be in the opposite direction from where you've been looking.
What am I fighting that I have no power to change?
Where in my life would less effort actually create better results?
What would I do differently if I stopped seeing life as a battle?
