When rigid beliefs become prison walls, freedom whispers softly
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I hold my beliefs lightly and let my truth evolve naturally"
Here's the thing about dogma: it starts as a lifeboat and ends up being the anchor that keeps you from swimming to shore. Know what I mean? I've watched it happen thousands of times in my thirty years of spiritual work. Someone discovers a teaching, a practice, a way of seeing the world that absolutely transforms their life. And that's beautiful! But then... then they grip it so tightly that the very thing that set them free becomes the cage they can't escape.
Look, I get it. When you find something that works, something that brings peace or clarity or healing, you want to hold onto it. You want to follow every rule, every tradition, every prescribed way of being. It feels safe. Honestly, there's comfort in knowing exactly what to believe and how to behave. The Tao Te Ching tells us that the wise are not learned, and the learned are not wise. Think about that. Sometimes our accumulation of spiritual knowledge becomes its own trap.
But here's what's interesting: true spiritual wisdom isn't about collecting the right beliefs or following the perfect system. It's about staying fluid, staying open, staying curious. Are you with me? The moment we turn our spiritual insights into rigid rules, we've missed the point entirely. We've turned the finger pointing at the moon into the moon itself.
I remember working with this woman, brilliant seeker, who'd studied Buddhism for decades. She could quote sutras, knew every meditation technique, followed every precept to the letter. But she was miserable. Seriously. She'd turned the Buddha's teachings into a spiritual straightjacket. One day I asked her, 'What if the Buddha was wrong about something?' You should've seen her face! The idea was so threatening that she couldn't even consider it.
That's dogma in action. It's the moment when your spiritual practice becomes more important than your actual spiritual growth. When maintaining the system matters more than discovering truth. When being right becomes more valuable than being free.
Truth is, every spiritual tradition I've studied has this same warning built right into it. Jesus said the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. The Tao that can be spoken is not the true Tao. Advaita Vedanta talks about using the thorn of wisdom to remove the thorn of ignorance, then throwing both thorns away. Wild, right? Even the wisest teachings know they're just fingers pointing at something beyond themselves.
So what happens when we let go of dogma? When we stop trying to fit our infinite experience into finite belief systems? We discover something amazing: the truth doesn't need our protection. It doesn't need us to defend it or preserve it or prove it to anyone. Truth just is. And when we're not busy maintaining our beliefs about truth, we can actually experience it directly.
This doesn't mean throwing away everything you've learned. I'm not suggesting spiritual nihilism or some kind of anything-goes relativism. What I'm talking about is holding your beliefs lightly. Using them as tools when they're helpful, setting them down when they're not. Staying curious instead of certain. Right?
The most deep spiritual experiences I've had, both personally and with clients, have come not from following someone else's map but from being willing to wander into unmarked territory. From trusting that inner knowing that doesn't need external validation. From remembering that the goal isn't to become a perfect Buddhist or Hindu or Christian or whatever... the goal is to become fully, authentically you.
Honestly, dogma is fear wearing spiritual clothes. It's the ego's attempt to create certainty in a at its core uncertain universe. But uncertainty isn't the enemy of spirituality. It's the birthplace of wonder, of discovery, of genuine transformation. When you don't know what's coming next, when you can't rely on your old formulas and frameworks, that's when real wisdom has a chance to emerge.
Here's how you start loosening dogma's grip: begin questioning one belief you hold as absolutely true. Not attacking it or throwing it away, just getting curious about it. Ask yourself: 'What if this isn't the whole story? What if there's more to discover here?'
Try this simple practice I call 'holding it lightly.' Take something you believe strongly about spirituality, relationships, success, whatever. Hold it in your mind like you're holding a small bird. Firm enough that it doesn't fly away, gentle enough that you don't crush it. Feel the difference? That's how beliefs are meant to be held.
Start noticing when you get defensive about your spiritual views. That defensiveness is usually dogma talking. When someone challenges your beliefs and you feel that knee-jerk need to prove them wrong, pause. Breathe. Ask yourself: 'What am I afraid of losing here?' Are you with me?
Practice saying 'I don't know' more often. Those three words are incredibly powerful. They create space for new understanding to emerge. They keep your mind open instead of closed. They remind you that mystery is okay, that not having all the answers isn't a spiritual failure.
Finally, spend time in direct experience rather than thinking about experience. Meditate without following any particular tradition. Walk in nature without trying to interpret what it means. Feel your breath without making it into a technique. Sometimes the most deep spiritual practice is simply being present without any spiritual framework at all.
When this card appears, it's time to examine where you've become too rigid in your spiritual or personal beliefs. You might be holding onto ideas, practices, or ways of being that once served you but have now become limitations. Look honestly at your life: where are you following rules without questioning their relevance? Where have you stopped growing because you're afraid to challenge what you think you know?
This card often shows up when you're ready for the next level of spiritual maturity, which paradoxically involves becoming more childlike in your wonder and less adult in your need to have everything figured out. It's an invitation to trade certainty for curiosity, rigidity for fluidity, knowing for experiencing.
Pay attention to areas where you judge others for not believing what you believe. That judgment is usually a sign that you're more attached to being right than being free. The Universe might be asking you to expand your understanding, to make room for perspectives that challenge your current worldview.
This is also a card of liberation. It's saying that whatever spiritual or personal prison you've built around yourself, the door is open. You just have to be willing to walk through it, even if you don't know what's on the other side. Trust that your authentic truth will guide you better than any external authority ever could.
