To truly live is to walk the razor's edge of the unknown.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I trust the unknown more than my familiar fears, and in this trust, I discover who I really am.""
Here's the thing about spiritual risk: it's nothing like the risks they talk about in business or relationships. Those risks? They're about protecting what you have, calculating outcomes, playing it smart. But spiritual risk? That's about letting go of everything you think you know about who you are. And honestly, it's terrifying.
I've been reading Nisargadatta for decades, and he keeps coming back to this wild idea: the biggest risk is staying who you think you are. Think about that. We spend our whole lives building this identity, this story of 'me,' and then spiritual awakening asks us to risk it all. To step into the complete unknown of what we actually are beyond all the stories.
The Tao Te Ching puts it beautifully: "The sage does not attempt anything very big, and thus achieves greatness." But here's what's interesting... that's not about playing it safe. It's about the ultimate risk of surrendering to what wants to move through you instead of forcing your own agenda. Are you with me?
Look, I've seen thousands of people in readings over the years, and the ones who transform? They're always the ones willing to risk their familiar suffering for unfamiliar freedom. Seriously. We'd rather stay miserable in ways we know than be happy in ways we don't. Wild, right?
In Advaita, they call it 'neti neti' - not this, not that. It's the practice of risking every identity you've ever claimed. Not the job, not the relationship status, not the spiritual seeker, not even the one who's awakening. It's the willingness to keep saying 'not this' until you're left with what can't be named or grasped.
But here's what nobody tells you about spiritual risk: it's not a one-time thing. You don't just take one big leap and land in enlightenment. It's moment by moment, breath by breath, constantly risking what you think you know for what's actually here. Right now. In this moment.
Truth is, the universe is always inviting us into bigger versions of ourselves, but we have to be willing to die to the smaller ones. And that feels like death because, in a way, it is. Every time you risk stepping beyond your comfort zone spiritually, some part of who you thought you were has to go.
I remember a client once telling me, 'Paul, I feel like I'm being asked to jump off a cliff, but I can't see the bottom.' And I said, 'Perfect. That means you're finally ready to fly.' Because that's what spiritual risk is: discovering you have wings you never knew existed.
The mind wants guarantees, wants to know the outcome before it commits. But spirit? Spirit says, 'Trust the process. Risk the familiar. Let me show you what's possible when you stop trying to control everything.' And honestly, that's where the magic happens.
Start small, but start today. Pick one thing you've been avoiding because it feels too unknown, too risky for your current sense of self. Maybe it's speaking your truth in a relationship, maybe it's following a creative calling, maybe it's simply sitting in meditation without trying to fix or improve anything.
Here's what I want you to do: before you take action, sit quietly and feel into the resistance. Really feel it. Notice how your body contracts, how your mind starts spinning stories about why it's not safe. That's not intuition, that's just old programming trying to keep you small. Are you with me?
Then, practice what I call 'micro-dosing the unknown.' Take the tiniest step possible in the direction that scares you. Not because you're trying to achieve something, but because you're practicing the art of trusting life more than your fears.
And here's the key: don't try to make it spiritual or meaningful. Just risk. Risk being awkward, risk not knowing, risk disappointing people who want you to stay the same. The universe doesn't need you to be perfect. It needs you to be real.
Each night, ask yourself: 'What did I risk today?' If the answer is nothing, you're playing too safe. Tomorrow, risk a little more. Not recklessly, but consciously. With presence. With trust in something bigger than your small self's need for control.
When Risk shows up in your reading, life is asking you to step beyond the edges of who you think you are. This isn't about being careless or impulsive. This is about recognizing that your soul is ready for an expansion that your personality isn't sure it can handle. Know what I mean?
Something you've been circling around, avoiding, or making excuses about? That's your invitation. The thing that feels too big, too unknown, too risky for the current version of yourself? That's exactly what wants to emerge through you.
Look, this card often appears when you're standing at a threshold. You can feel something calling you forward, but your mind is throwing up every reason why it's not safe, not practical, not the right time. Here's the thing: it's never the right time for transformation. You just have to trust that you're bigger than your fears.
Risk is also showing up to remind you that spiritual growth isn't about accumulating more knowledge or experiences. It's about the willingness to let go of everything you think you know and step into direct, immediate relationship with what's actually here. That's always a risk because the mind can't map it ahead of time.
Trust the unknown. Your soul knows the way even when your mind doesn't have a clue.
What am I avoiding right now because it feels too risky or unknown?
How has playing it safe actually been the biggest risk to my soul's growth?
What would I attempt if I trusted that the universe has my back completely?
