The fierce, tender art of choosing a path and walking it to the end.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I commit fully to my path, knowing that wholehearted dedication is my gateway to freedom.""
You know what I've noticed after thirty years of walking alongside people on their spiritual paths? The ones who make it... really make it... they all have one thing in common. They commit. Not just to the pretty parts, not just when it feels good, but to the whole messy, beautiful, terrifying journey of becoming who they really are.
Here's the thing about commitment: most people think it's about limitation. Like you're putting yourself in some kind of spiritual straightjacket. But honestly? It's the exact opposite. Real commitment is what sets you free.
The Tao Te Ching talks about wu wei, right? That effortless action that flows from deep alignment. But here's what's interesting... you can't get to effortless without first being completely committed to the effort. Think about that. You have to care enough to try, fail, get back up, and try again before you find that place where trying disappears and you're just... being.
I remember this conversation with a student years ago. She kept jumping from teacher to teacher, practice to practice, always looking for the 'perfect' path. Know what I mean? And she was frustrated because nothing was 'working.' Look, I told her, you're not committed to anything long enough for it to work. You're like someone who plants seeds and digs them up every week to see if they're growing.
The Bhagavad Gita gets this. Krishna tells Arjuna about dharma, about doing your duty without attachment to results. But first, you have to know what your duty is. You have to commit to finding out. You have to commit to the questions before you can live the answers.
Truth is, commitment isn't about perfection. It's about showing up. Even when you don't feel like it. Especially when you don't feel like it. Are you with me? Because that's where the magic happens... in the showing up when every part of you wants to quit.
Advaita Vedanta teaches that there's no separate self to begin with. So who's making this commitment? Wild, right? But that's exactly why commitment matters. Through the practice of dedicating yourself completely to something greater than your small self, you discover there was never a small self to begin with. The commitment dissolves the committer.
But here's what's really beautiful about this card showing up for you: it's not asking you to commit to someone else's vision. It's asking you to commit to your own deepest knowing. To that whisper in your heart that's been trying to get your attention. To the path that scares you because it's so perfectly, authentically you.
Seriously. I've seen people transform their entire lives not through dramatic breakthroughs, but through the simple, radical act of committing to who they really are. Day after day. Choice after choice. Breath after breath.
Here's how you practice real commitment: Start small, but start sacred. Choose one thing... just one... that represents your deepest truth right now. Maybe it's a daily meditation practice, maybe it's speaking up for yourself, maybe it's creating something that's been burning in your heart.
Now here's the key: commit to it for a specific period of time. Not forever (that's too overwhelming), but long enough to get past the resistance. I usually suggest 40 days. Why? Because 40 days is long enough for your ego to throw every excuse, every distraction, every reason to quit at you... and for you to keep going anyway.
Make it a ritual. Don't just decide to do it, decide how you're going to honor it. Light a candle. Say a prayer. Create a sacred moment around your commitment each day. This isn't just about the action; it's about the consciousness you bring to it.
And when you miss a day (because you might), don't start over. Don't judge yourself. Just recommit. Right? The commitment isn't about being perfect; it's about returning. Again and again. That's actually the practice... the returning.
When this card appears, it's time to stop dabbling and start dedicating. The universe is asking you to choose. Not choosing is still choosing... it's choosing to let life happen to you instead of through you. Know what I mean?
Look at where you've been holding back, where you've been keeping one foot out the door. That relationship, that creative project, that spiritual practice, that dream you keep saying you'll pursue 'someday.' This card is your someday.
But here's what's interesting: this isn't about forcing yourself into something that doesn't fit. It's about recognizing what already has your heart and finally giving it your whole self. You know what I'm talking about. That thing that lights you up and scares you in equal measure.
The appearance of this card also suggests you're ready. You wouldn't be seeing it if you weren't capable of making the commitment it's asking for. Trust is, your soul knows when it's time to go all in. Listen to that knowing.
What am I ready to commit to fully, without holding back?
Where have I been keeping one foot out the door, and what would change if I stepped all the way in?
What is my heart asking me to dedicate myself to, even if it scares me?
