The fierce tender root from which all growth begins
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I hold the sacred space of creation with grounded love and fierce presence.""
Parenthood is the raw, unfiltered scene where vulnerability meets responsibility in real time; it doesn’t allow for spiritual bypassing or airy detachments. Every moment a parent lives is a negotiation between surrender and fierce holding, surrender to the mystery of growth and holding the child’s emerging self as sacred and whole. The Tao Te Ching tells us in Chapter 64, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Parenthood is exactly that: a relentless series of steps toward becoming not just a parent but a vessel of trustworthy presence.
To be a parent is to live in paradox, embodied in the very act of raising life outside yourself while simultaneously realizing in Advaita Vedanta that the self you think you hold separate is a reflection of the universal self. You hold a child, but you also hold the essence of impermanence and nondual truth. Parenting forces the recognition that control is partial, relinquishment absolute.
Krishna, in the Bhagavad Gita, instructs Arjuna to act without attachment to the fruits of his actions. Parenthood is the ultimate exercise in this principle. You plant the seed, nourish the sapling, but cannot force the tree to grow your way, or guarantee how far the branches will reach. The fruit is not yours to claim, and yet your actions irrevocably shape its becoming.
In the Buddhist tradition, the idea of dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda) teaches us that nothing arises in isolation. A child’s existence is woven from countless causes and conditions, including the physical, emotional, and spiritual environment parents create. To parent well is to become deeply aware of these interconnections, to act with mindfulness, responsibility, and fierce compassion.
A real-life example: I remember a friend whose teenage daughter rebelled, testing boundaries with reckless defiances. Many parents would retreat or impose judgment, but this friend held a space of fierce tenderness. She was clear about limits without closing her heart. She allowed the chaos, tears, anger, confusion, to exist without spiritualizing it away or pushing for swift resolution. She stayed grounded in the moment, embodying the Tao's softness that ultimately overcomes hardness. Over time, this steadiness created trust and eventually healed the rift.
Parenthood also confronts you with your shadow relentlessly, your fears, your insecurities, your unmet wounds. It demands the ruthless inner work that no spiritual philosophy can shortcut. As Amma taught Paul Wagner for decades, 'Serving without expectation is the fire that burns away ego.' Children are the greatest mirrors; their spontaneous presence forces you to see yourself clearly, without edits.
To parent is to practice radical presence, showing up fully without the mask of perfection or disembodied spirit. You fail, you apologize, you try again. The Tao Te Ching tells us, “When we are born, we cry that we are come to this great stage of fools.” Parenthood immerses you in that folly and grace, the unending dance of chaos and love.
In sum, Parenthood is a spiritual practice that demands groundedness, fierce love, tender discipline, and humility before the mystery of life. It calls you to embody the teachings of the sages in the messy, noisy, unpredictable theater where souls grow, including your own.
Begin each day by grounding yourself with the recognition that parenting is both a call to fierce responsibility and radical surrender. Spend five minutes breathing deeply, connecting to the reality that control is an illusion, and your task is to hold space for growth rather than command outcomes. Adopt the Tao’s principle of wu wei, effortless action, not by passivity but by responsive presence. Move through your day observing your child’s needs and your own patterns of reaction with fresh eyes, resisting the urge to fix, judge, or withdraw.
When conflict arises, take a moment to reflect on Krishna’s call in the Gita to act without attachment to results. Discipline firmly but gently. Speak truth to your child with respect, knowing that your grounded presence plants seeds that may not bloom immediately but will carry deep roots. Resist soothing with spiritual clichés; instead, allow space for genuine emotion and growth.
Lastly, integrate the Buddhist practice of mindfulness by creating small rituals that anchor you and your child in the present moment, whether it’s a shared breath before an emotional conversation or a simple walk in nature. Parenting is the fire of practice, lean into it with courage and tenderness.
