The Teaching

Here's the thing about walking with God: it's not some mystical achievement reserved for saints and sages. It's available right now, in this very moment, as you read these words. Brother Lawrence figured this out while washing dishes in a monastery kitchen. The Taoists knew it while walking mountain paths. You can know it while walking to your car.

Walking with God isn't about finding some perfect spiritual state. It's about recognizing that the Divine is already here, already walking with you, already present in every breath, every step, every ordinary moment of your life. Know what I mean? We spend so much energy trying to reach God when God is right here, matching our pace.

I've been walking this path for thirty years now, and honestly? The most deep moments weren't during meditation retreats or vision quests. They were while walking my dog at dawn, feeling that presence beside me. While grocery shopping and suddenly knowing I wasn't alone. While sitting in traffic and realizing even this was sacred space.

Truth is, we're always on pilgrimage. Every step is taking us somewhere, even when we think we're just going to work or walking around the block. But here's what's wild: when you start practicing the presence of God, when you consciously invite that awareness into your walking, everything changes. The path becomes sacred. The journey becomes the destination.

This isn't about believing the right things or following the right rules. It's about attention. It's about remembering that you're not walking alone, you never have been. Every tradition knows this. The Sufis talk about walking the path of love. Buddhists speak of walking meditation. Indigenous peoples know about walking in sacred relationship with all life. Same truth, different words.

Look, I get it. Sometimes life feels anything but sacred. Sometimes you're walking through grief or fear or just bone-deep exhaustion. But here's what I've learned: God doesn't just walk with you on the mountaintops. God walks with you through the valleys too. Especially through the valleys.

When my mom was dying, I'd walk the hospital corridors at night, and I could feel that presence so strongly. Not taking away the pain, but sharing it. Walking with me through it. That's when I really understood what this card means. It's not about having all the answers or feeling peaceful all the time. It's about never being truly alone.

The practice is simple but not easy. You start by remembering. You pause and acknowledge: I am walking with God. God is walking with me. You don't have to feel anything special. You just have to remember. Then you pay attention to your steps, your breath, the world around you. You walk with awareness instead of on autopilot.

Some days it'll feel magical. You'll sense that presence so clearly it takes your breath away. Other days it'll feel like nothing more than a nice idea. That's okay. Keep walking anyway. The practice isn't about the feeling, it's about the relationship. And relationships grow through showing up, not through perfect moments.

Think about that friend who's always there for you, whether you're having the best day of your life or the worst. That's what this is like. God's not waiting for you to get your act together or achieve some spiritual milestone. God's already walking beside you, has been all along, will be tomorrow too.

Your whole life becomes a pilgrimage when you see it this way. Going to work becomes walking with God to work. Difficult conversations become walking with God through difficult conversations. Even your mistakes become part of the sacred journey, because perfect pilgrims don't exist, but beloved ones do.

How to Embody This Teaching

Start simple. Tomorrow morning, before you take your first step out of bed, pause and say quietly: 'I walk with God today.' Not as magic words, but as remembrance. As intention. Then actually pay attention to your walking throughout the day.

When you walk to the kitchen for coffee, feel your feet on the floor and remember you're not alone. When you walk to your car, notice the air on your skin and invite that presence to come along for the ride. When you're walking through the grocery store, let each step be a tiny prayer of gratitude.

Here's a practice I love: pick one regular walk you do and make it conscious pilgrimage. Maybe it's from your car to your office, or around the block with your dog, or just down the hallway to brush your teeth. For that walk, every single day, remember you're walking with God. Count your steps as prayers. Notice what you see, hear, feel, and offer it all as communion.

If you want to go deeper, try this: spend ten minutes walking somewhere beautiful, and with each step, say internally 'Thank you for walking with me.' Don't worry about who or what you're thanking. Just let gratitude be your walking companion. You'll be amazed how this simple practice shifts everything. Seriously.

When life gets overwhelming, when you're walking through difficult times, don't abandon the practice. That's when you need it most. Even if all you can manage is remembering once an hour that you're not walking alone, that's enough. That's everything, actually.

When This Card Appears

When this card appears, it's time to remember you're not walking life's path alone. Maybe you've been feeling isolated, carrying burdens by yourself, forgetting that support is always available. This card is a gentle reminder that the Divine walks beside you, not as some distant force, but as intimate presence.

Look at where you're going right now, literally and metaphorically. What path are you on? What journey are you taking? This card suggests it's time to make that journey conscious, to transform ordinary movement into sacred pilgrimage. Every step can be prayer if you let it.

If you're facing difficult decisions or walking through challenging times, this card offers deep comfort: you don't have to figure it all out alone. The wisdom you need, the strength you need, the guidance you need is walking right beside you. Trust your steps. Trust the path, even when you can't see where it leads.

This might also be calling you to pay attention to your actual walking, your physical presence in the world. Have you been rushing through life on autopilot? Missing the sacred in the ordinary? Time to slow down and notice. Time to turn everyday movement into communion with the Divine.

Are you with me? Sometimes the most deep spiritual practice is simply remembering you're accompanied. Always accompanied. This card is your invitation to walk consciously, walk gratefully, walk in relationship with the sacred presence that never leaves your side.
