The Teaching

The Tyranny of the Plan

We are a culture that is obsessed with plans. We have five-year plans, ten-year plans, retirement plans. We schedule our days, our weeks, our lives, down to the minute. We believe that if we can just control everything, if we can just stick to the plan, then we will be happy. But this is a delusion. Life is wild and unpredictable. It does not care about our plans. And the more we try to control it, the more we suffer.

Interruption as a Wake-Up Call

In many spiritual traditions, an interruption is not seen as a problem, but as a gift. It is a wake-up call from the universe, a reminder that we are not in control. It is an invitation to step out of the trance of our daily routines and to be present to what is actually happening. A traffic jam, a cancelled flight, a sudden illness – these are not obstacles to our lives; they *are* our lives. And they are all opportunities to practice surrender, to practice patience, to practice being present to what is.

The Tao of Interruption

In Taoism, the concept of *wu wei* is often misunderstood as passivity or inaction. But it is not about doing nothing. It is about acting in harmony with the Tao, with the natural flow of life. It is about being like water, which flows around obstacles without resistance. When we are in a state of wu wei, we do not see interruptions as problems. We see them as course corrections, as opportunities to learn and to grow. We trust that the river of life knows where it is going, and we are content to flow with it.

A Real-Life Example

I was once on a silent retreat for ten days. I had a plan. I was going to meditate for ten hours a day, I was going to have deep insights, I was going to achieve enlightenment. But on the third day, I got sick. I had a fever, I was weak, I could barely get out of bed. My plan was ruined. I was filled with frustration and self-pity. But as I lay in my bed, unable to do anything, I began to listen. I listened to the sound of the birds outside my window. I listened to the sound of my own breath. I listened to the silence. And in that listening, I found a peace that was deeper than any enlightenment I could have ever imagined.

How to Embody This Teaching

How to Embody This Teaching

  • The Practice of Welcoming Interruptions: The next time you are interrupted, instead of getting frustrated, see if you can welcome it. Take a deep breath and say to yourself, "This is a gift. This is an opportunity to wake up."
  • The Practice of the Sacred Pause: When you feel yourself getting caught up in the momentum of your day, take a sacred pause. Stop what you are doing, take a few deep breaths, and be present to the moment. You can do this at a red light, in a long line at the grocery store, or any time you feel yourself getting stressed or overwhelmed.
  • The Practice of Letting Go of the Plan: At the beginning of each day, set an intention to let go of your own agenda and to be open to the unfolding of life. Trust that whatever happens is exactly what is supposed to happen.

When This Card Appears

When This Card Appears

When the Interrupt card appears in a reading, it is a sign that you are being called to let go of your own plans and to surrender to a larger intelligence. It may be a sign that you are too attached to your own ideas about how things should be, and that you are being invited to a more fluid and spontaneous way of being in the world. It can also be a sign that a major life change is on the horizon, and that you are being prepared for a new and unknown future.
