The Teaching

Enthusiasm is not some fluffy, feel-good concept handed out like a participation trophy. It is the raw, fierce flame that rips through the fog of apathy and complacency, lighting up your inner scene with real, lived aliveness. Enthusiasm is the bodymind’s way of signaling that life is moving through you with meaning, not just motion.

The Tao Te Ching doesn’t glamorize enthusiasm with grand speeches; it shows it through effortless action: “When the work is done, and its aim fulfilled, all the people say, ‘We did it ourselves.’” (Chapter 17). Enthusiasm is the quiet, relentless flow that underlies engaged action, the kind where effortlessness meets a fierce commitment rooted in love of the process, not just the outcome.

From the lens of Advaita Vedanta, enthusiasm is the dance of the Self playing in and through the forms of the world. As Shankara teaches, the Atman is present in all activity, but enthusiastically participating requires the delicate balance of knowing you are not the doer while still giving your full-bodied energy to the task at hand. Enthusiasm without awareness turns into ego-driven pushing, but awareness without enthusiasm turns into lifeless drifting. The magic is in the tension.

Bhagavad Gita breaks it down further: Krishna’s instructions to Arjuna emphasize Nishkama Karma, action without attachment, yet driven by ‘joy in duty,’ which is enthusiasm rooted in devotion and surrender. "Perform your obligatory duty, because action is indeed better than inaction." (3.8) Enthusiasm here is the fuel for engaged right action, grounded in purpose beyond self-gratification.

In Buddhist teachings, especially in the Zen tradition, enthusiasm is linked to what is called “Right Effort”, the energetic urge to cultivate wholesome states and let go of unwholesome ones. This is not mania or forced positivity, but a clear-eyed willingness to show up and participate fully in reality as-is. It’s the spark that ignites practice and sustains it through dryness and doubt.

Here is a real-life example. Imagine a young teacher in a tough urban school, exhausted by bureaucracy, resistant students, and systemic neglect. Day after day, the temptation to check out is real. Yet what keeps this teacher going is an irrepressible enthusiasm not for facile positivity but for the possibility held in each student’s face, the chance that one more moment of fierce attention matters. This is not superficial cheerleading; it’s the gritty flame that permeates every lesson, every corrected paper, every challenge, informing her work as sacred action.

Enthusiasm is not necessarily explosive external excitement. It can be the deep, molten core of rousing aliveness burning quietly beneath the crust of our daily realities, a fierce tenderness toward being alive. This aliveness bridges the gap between spirit and form, the gap where many stumble into spiritual bypassing.

Spiritual bypassing would tell you enthusiasm is about feeling good all the time or denying the hard realities. The teaching on this card says no, enthusiasm is the refusal to be dulled by hardship, the choice to find your fierce inner fire, no matter the circumstances. As Paul often says, enthusiasm is not optional if you want to live genuinely; it is the closest bridge between your highest self and the mess on the ground.

So I invite you to look at your own life, where are you going through the motions without enthusiasm? How might you re-ignite that fierce flame that makes actions matter beyond mere habit? How can you make your engagement with life more an act of devotion and presence and less an exhausted obligation?

Enthusiasm is the medicine against paralysis and despair. It dissolves the stasis created by overthinking and opens a gateway to integrity that honors both shadow and light. It is the heartfelt ‘yes’ whispered by your soul in the midst of chaos. It is the fierce tenderness of presence, the refusal to accept dullness as default.

How to Embody This Teaching

How to Embody This Teaching

Start your day by tuning into what truly sparks your interest, not what you think you should do or what looks good on paper, but the thing that makes your pulse rise and your breath deepen. Enthusiasm thrives on genuine connection to what moves you on a visceral level.

Use breath and movement as allies. Before diving into tasks that feel mechanical or draining, take moments to breathe deeply, move your body, and remember why this action matters to you. This recalls the Tao’s principle of flow, “Be like water,” but with heat, not coldness. It’s the balance of softness and fierceness.

Practice “fierce presence”, a term Paul Wagner uses to mean showing up fully with tenderness and raw honesty. This means refusing spiritual bypassing like “just be positive” or “detach and watch.” Enthusiasm demands engagement; it’s the opposite of numbness.

Keep a journal to record moments in your day when you felt real enthusiasm, no matter how small. What brought it on? Notice what conditions kill it too. This awareness is key to cultivating it intentionally.

Lastly, deepen your inquiry with this question: Can you enthusiastically love what actually is, not what you wish were true? This aligns with the Gita’s call to act with devotion yet without attachment, turning enthusiasm into a practice of grounded joy rather than reactive excitement.

When This Card Appears

When This Card Appears

The Enthusiasm card cuts through your fog of fatigue or disengagement. It’s a wake-up call and a blessing. It means that your energy is realigning with your purpose, and it’s time to lean into the work or journey ahead with a fierceness that honors your whole being. This card shows up when you need a reset from dull obligation into soulful action.

It can also suggest that you are missing the fire beneath the surface, numbing your natural enthusiasm through overthinking, fear, or spiritual bypassing. This card encourages you to reclaim your primal zest for life that connects the mundane with the sacred.

In relationships or projects, Enthusiasm signals the power of engaged presence and heart-fueled commitment rather than mechanical routines or hollow obligation. Pay attention to what revives your spirit and bring that juice back into your daily living.
