When illusions unravel, freedom wears a wry smile.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I see through illusions with crystal clarity and trust my inner knowing above all else.""
Look, I've been fooled more times than I care to count. Know what I mean? We all have. And honestly? That's not the problem. The problem is when we beat ourselves up for it instead of learning from it.
Here's the thing about being tricked: it's never really about the other person. I know that sounds harsh, but stay with me. When someone pulls the wool over our eyes, they're only able to do it because something inside us wants to believe their version of reality. Maybe we want to be loved so badly we ignore the red flags. Maybe we want the shortcut so desperately we don't ask the hard questions. Maybe we're so tired of struggling we'll grab onto any lifeline, even if it's made of smoke.
Truth is, every time I've been deceived, it's been because I was deceiving myself first. Seriously. Think about that. The external trickery can only land where there's already some internal trickery happening. Some place where I'm not being completely honest with myself about what I'm seeing, feeling, or knowing.
But here's what's interesting: being tricked isn't a failure. It's data. Wild, right? Every time someone cons us, manipulates us, or leads us down the garden path, they're actually showing us exactly where our blind spots are. They're pointing directly at the places where we abandon ourselves, where we hand our power over, where we stop trusting our own inner knowing.
I remember this guy I knew years ago who could sell ice to Eskimos. Charming as hell, always had some amazing opportunity, always needed just a little help to make it happen. And I fell for it. More than once. Each time I'd think, "This time is different." Each time I'd ignore that little voice in my gut saying, "Paul, you know better."
The gift wasn't in avoiding him. The gift was in asking myself: why do I keep abandoning my intuition for this person? What am I hungry for that I think he can provide? Where am I not trusting myself?
See, tricksters are like spiritual teachers in disguise. They show up to reveal where we're still asleep, still giving our power away, still believing stories that aren't true. They're like those fish that clean the bigger fish, except they're cleaning out our delusions and self-betrayals. Not fun, but necessary.
The real trickery isn't what they do to us. It's what we do to ourselves. We trick ourselves into thinking we need someone else's approval. We trick ourselves into believing we're not enough as we are. We trick ourselves into thinking safety comes from outside us instead of from our connection to our own truth.
And you know what? Sometimes we're the trickster. Sometimes we're the one weaving stories, manipulating situations, trying to get what we want through clever maneuvering instead of honest asking. Are you with me? We all have that shadow. The part that would rather be clever than real, strategic than honest.
Here's what I've learned: the antidote to being tricked isn't becoming cynical or building walls. It's becoming more intimate with your own truth. It's learning to feel the difference between your authentic yes and your people-pleasing yes. It's knowing the difference between intuitive knowing and wishful thinking.
When you're connected to your truth, trickery becomes impossible. Not because people won't try, but because you'll see it coming from a mile away. Your body will tell you. Your energy will tell you. That little voice inside will speak up loud and clear.
Honestly, I'm grateful for every con artist, every manipulator, every sweet-talking charlatan who's crossed my path. They taught me to trust myself more than anyone else's story about what's good for me. They taught me that my inner knowing is more reliable than any external promise. They taught me that being awake is a choice I make moment by moment.
Right now, I want you to think about a time when you were tricked, deceived, or manipulated. Don't go to the biggest trauma, just pick something manageable. Got it? Good.
Now here's what we're going to do. Instead of focusing on what they did wrong, I want you to get curious about what was happening inside you at the time. What were you hungry for? What story were you telling yourself? What did you want to believe so badly that you ignored your inner warnings?
This isn't about blame, it's about reclaiming power. When we understand our part in the dance, we can change the steps. Start carrying a small notebook for the next week and write down every time you notice yourself wanting to believe something that feels too good to be true. Every time you catch yourself ignoring your gut feeling. Every time you find yourself making excuses for someone's behavior.
Practice the pause. Before you say yes to anything significant, give yourself 24 hours. Sleep on it. See how it feels in the morning when the charm has worn off and you're just left with the facts. Your truth lives in that pause.
And here's the big one: start telling the truth more. To yourself first, then to others. The more honest you are, the less appealing you become to people who thrive on deception. Truth is like garlic to energy vampires. They can't stand it.
When this card shows up, something's not what it seems. But here's the twist: the real question isn't who's trying to trick you, it's where you're tricking yourself. This card is asking you to wake up and smell the coffee.
Maybe someone in your life is spinning stories, making promises they can't keep, or trying to manipulate your emotions. Or maybe you're the one doing the tricking, trying to get what you want through clever maneuvering instead of honest communication. Either way, it's time to cut through the BS and get real.
This card often appears when we're about to repeat an old pattern, when we're tempted to believe someone who's shown us who they are through their actions. It's your inner wisdom saying, "Hold up. Look closer. Trust what you know, not what you're being told."
If you're dealing with a situation that feels too good to be true, it probably is. If someone's promises don't match their track record, pay attention to the track record. If your gut is sending up red flags but your head is making excuses, listen to your gut. This card is your permission to trust yourself more than anyone else's version of reality.
Where in my life am I ignoring red flags because I want something to be true?
What stories am I telling myself to avoid facing an uncomfortable truth?
How do I abandon my own intuition when I want someone else's approval?
