When reality bends, truth reveals itself through the cracks

The Teaching

You know what's wild? We spend most of our lives living in a hall of mirrors, and we call it reality. But here's the thing: every single thing you think you know about yourself, about others, about how life works... it's all been filtered through layers of conditioning, expectations, and stories we've inherited or created. That's distortion, and honestly? It's everywhere.

I've been doing readings for three decades now, and I can tell you this: the most deep breakthroughs happen when people finally see how distorted their view has been. Not because they're broken or wrong, but because distortion is actually the human condition. We're like fish trying to understand water while swimming in it.

Think about it. Every belief you hold about who you should be? Distortion. Every story about what success looks like, what love should feel like, what spirituality is supposed to deliver? All of it gets warped through the lens of what you've been taught, what you've experienced, what you're afraid of losing or desperate to gain. Are you with me?

But here's what's interesting: distortion isn't the enemy. It's actually pointing you toward something deeper. When you can see the bend in the mirror, you start questioning what's real. When you notice how your perspective shifts depending on your mood, your fears, your desires, you begin to wonder: what would I see if all these filters were stripped away?

Look, I'm not talking about some perfect, undistorted view. That's just another spiritual fantasy. I'm talking about recognizing distortion for what it is: a creative force. Your psyche distorts reality to protect you, to motivate you, to help you make sense of chaos. Sometimes it serves you beautifully. Sometimes it keeps you trapped in stories that stopped being true years ago.

The real teaching here isn't about eliminating distortion. It's about dancing with it consciously. When you know you're looking through a lens, you can choose which lens to use. When you recognize that your interpretation of events is just that... an interpretation... you get your power back. You stop taking your thoughts so seriously. You stop believing every story your mind tells you about what's happening.

Truth is, the most authentic people I know aren't the ones who've transcended distortion. They're the ones who've learned to work with it skillfully. They know when their fear is making mountains out of molehills. They can catch themselves when old patterns are distorting their view of new situations. They've made friends with the fact that their perception is always partial, always colored by their history and hopes.

This is where real freedom lives. Not in some perfect clarity, but in the honest acknowledgment that you're always seeing through colored glass. And once you know that? You can start choosing your colors deliberately. You can ask better questions: What story am I telling myself right now? What would this look like if I weren't afraid? What if I'm wrong about what this means? What if there's a completely different way to see this?

Seriously, this changes everything. When you stop defending your version of reality as the only truth, you open up space for magic. For surprise. For solutions you couldn't see before. For connection that goes beyond your preconceptions about who someone is or what they're capable of.

The invitation here isn't to fix your distortion. It's to get curious about it. To notice how it works, when it serves you, when it limits you. To develop what I call 'benevolent skepticism' about your own perceptions. Not cynicism, but a kind, wise questioning that keeps you humble and open.

Because here's the truth: reality is so much bigger and more mysterious than any story we can tell about it. Distortion is just your human attempt to make sense of the infinite. And when you can hold that lightly? When you can laugh at how seriously you take your own perspective? That's when you start living authentically. Not from some perfect knowing, but from a place of curious, humble engagement with the beautiful mystery of it all.

How to Embody This Teaching

Start with your stories. Right now, think of a situation that's been bothering you. Got it? Good. Now here's what I want you to do: write down your version of what's happening. Be honest. Include all your judgments, assumptions, fears. Really spell it out.

Now comes the fun part. Read what you wrote and ask yourself: 'What if I'm seeing this through a specific filter?' Maybe it's your need to be right. Maybe it's an old wound. Maybe it's your fear of disappointment. Don't try to figure out the 'real' truth. Just notice what lens you might be using.

Here's a practice I love: throughout your day, catch yourself saying or thinking 'That person is...' or 'This situation is...' Stop mid-sentence and add 'according to my current perspective.' It sounds simple, but it's powerful. You're not giving up your opinion. You're just acknowledging it's an opinion.

Try the 'What else could this mean?' game. When something triggers you, when you're certain you know what someone's behavior means, pause. Ask yourself: what are three other possible interpretations? Get creative. Get wild. The point isn't to find the 'right' answer but to loosen your grip on being right.

And here's something practical: notice your mood-dependent reality. Pay attention to how the same situation looks different when you're tired versus energized, worried versus confident. That's distortion in action. Not wrong, just... fluid. When you see how your perception shifts with your state, you stop taking any single view too seriously. You start working with your awareness instead of being trapped by it.

When This Card Appears

When Distortion appears in your reading, it's time to question everything you think you know about your current situation. Not in a paranoid way, but with loving curiosity. You're being invited to notice where your perception might be colored by old patterns, fears, or expectations that no longer serve you.

This card often shows up when you're stuck in a story that's keeping you small or confused. Maybe you're convinced someone doesn't care about you when they're actually showing love in ways you don't recognize. Maybe you're seeing a challenge as impossible when it's actually an opportunity in disguise. The distortion isn't 'bad'... it's just limiting your options.

Look for where you're being too rigid in your interpretations. Where are you defending your version of reality so strongly that you can't see alternatives? This card is asking you to soften your certainty, to get curious about what else might be true. It's often a sign that a breakthrough is available if you're willing to question your assumptions.

Sometimes Distortion appears when you're in a period of confusion or transition. Instead of fighting the unclear vision, this card suggests working with it. What if not knowing is exactly where you need to be right now? What if the distortion is protecting you from moving too fast or helping you see something you've been missing? Trust the process, even when you can't see clearly. Especially then.

Journaling Prompts

1

What story about my current situation am I most attached to, and what would happen if it wasn't completely true?

2

Where in my life am I seeing through the lens of old wounds or fears, and how might that be distorting my perception?

3

If I could see this challenge through the eyes of love instead of fear, what would look different?
