When the weight of fault becomes the chain to your freedom
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I am not my mistakes, I am the love that learns from them.""
Look, I've been doing this work for thirty years, and if there's one thing I see over and over, it's how blame and shame keep people trapped in prisons they built themselves. Know what I mean? These aren't just emotions. They're identity thieves.
Here's the thing about blame: it's always pointing somewhere else. You blame your parents, your ex, your boss, the government, the weather. Seriously. But here's what's interesting... every finger you point outward has three pointing back at you. And that's where shame lives. Right there in that painful recognition that maybe, just maybe, you played a part in your own suffering.
But honestly? Both blame and shame are missing the point entirely.
The Tao Te Ching says something beautiful: 'The sage does not attempt anything very big, and thus achieves greatness.' Think about that. When you're caught up in blame, you're attempting to rewrite the past. When you're drowning in shame, you're trying to punish yourself into worthiness. Both are impossible tasks. Both keep you small.
In my thirty years of sessions, I've watched thousands of people discover this truth: you are not your mistakes. You're not your poor choices. You're not what happened to you. You're the awareness that witnesses all of it. The observer that remains untouched by the drama.
Advaita Vedanta calls this your true Self. Not the ego-self that's constantly judging and comparing and keeping score. The Self that simply is. Pure consciousness. Pure being. Are you with me?
Truth is, blame and shame are both forms of resistance to what already happened. They're ways of arguing with reality. And guess what? Reality always wins. Always.
I remember working with a client who'd been carrying shame about a mistake she made twenty years ago. Twenty years! She was literally allowing something that lasted maybe five minutes to define two decades of her life. Wild, right?
Here's what we discovered together: shame isn't about what you did. It's about what you think what you did means about who you are. It's a story. A narrative. And stories can be rewritten.
The Tao teaches us about wu wei... effortless action. When you stop fighting with your past, when you stop trying to justify or condemn or fix what's already done, something miraculous happens. Space opens up. Breath returns. The present moment becomes available again.
Look, I'm not saying you ignore your mistakes or pretend they didn't happen. That's spiritual bypassing, and it doesn't work. I'm saying you stop making them mean something about your fundamental worth as a human being.
Your true nature... it's like the sky. Clouds come and go. Storms pass through. But the sky itself remains unchanged. Blame and shame? They're just weather patterns moving through your awareness. They're not you.
But here's what's really beautiful about releasing these burdens: it frees up so much energy. Energy you've been using to maintain these heavy stories can suddenly flow toward creativity, love, service, joy. Think about that.
In Advaita, they ask: 'Who is the one who feels ashamed?' Keep asking that question. Keep going deeper. You'll find that the one who observes the shame is never touched by it. The awareness itself is pure, untainted, whole.
And when you really get this... when you feel it in your bones... you realize that everyone else is struggling with the same illusions. Your compassion expands. Your judgments soften. You start seeing through the surface story to the beautiful, wounded, perfect being beneath.
This is liberation. Not from your humanity, but into it. Fully human, fully divine, fully here.
Here's how you start releasing these chains, and honestly, it's simpler than you think.
Begin with breath. Seriously. When blame or shame arises, pause and take three deep breaths. Feel your feet on the ground. You're here. You're alive. You survived whatever happened. That's already something.
Now practice this inquiry: ask yourself, 'Who is the one feeling this?' Keep asking. Go deeper. Don't settle for surface answers like 'I am.' Ask again: 'Who is this I?' Keep pointing awareness back toward the one who's aware. Are you with me?
When blame comes up, try this: instead of asking 'Who's fault is this?' ask 'What wants to be learned here?' Or 'How can this serve my growth?' It completely shifts the energy from victim to student.
For shame, practice this phrase: 'I am not my behavior.' Say it out loud. 'I am not what happened to me.' Feel the truth of that. You are the space in which all experiences arise and pass away.
Write a letter to yourself from the perspective of unconditional love. What would that voice say? How would it speak to your mistakes? Your pain? Your struggle? Read it daily until you internalize that voice.
Practice forgiveness work, but start small. Forgive yourself for something tiny first. Maybe for running late yesterday or forgetting to call someone back. Build that forgiveness muscle gradually.
Remember: this is a practice, not a one-time event. Be patient with yourself. Shame wants to rush you into more shame about having shame. Don't fall for it. You're exactly where you need to be.
When this card appears, you're being called to examine what you're carrying that doesn't belong to you anymore. Are you holding onto old resentments? Beating yourself up for past choices? This card is a gentle but firm invitation to put down those heavy bags.
Look, the universe is showing you that it's time for some serious release work. Maybe you've been blaming others for your current situation. Maybe you've been drowning in shame about something that happened years ago. Either way, you're being asked to step into your power as the conscious creator of your experience.
This card often appears when you're ready for a breakthrough but these old patterns are blocking your path. It's saying: 'Hey, you can't move forward while you're chained to the past.' Right?
Truth is, this card is actually good news. It means you're spiritually mature enough to do this deeper work. You're ready to stop being a victim of your own story and start being the author of it.
If you're in a situation where you feel stuck, ask yourself: 'What am I not forgiving here?' The answer might surprise you. Sometimes it's not about forgiving others. Sometimes it's about forgiving yourself for being human.
This card is also about compassion. As you release your own blame and shame, you'll naturally extend that same grace to others. It's a ripple effect that heals not just you, but everyone around you.
What story am I telling myself about my past that keeps me small?
If I released all blame and shame right now, what would become possible?
What would I do differently if I truly believed I am worthy of love exactly as I am?
