The Teaching

Spiritual bypassing is the most dangerous and insidious trap on the spiritual path. It’s the use of spiritual ideas and practices to avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks. It’s the ego in a yoga outfit. It’s the ultimate form of self-deception.

The Hallmarks of Spiritual Bypassing

Spiritual bypassing can show up in many ways. It can be the person who is always “love and light,” who refuses to acknowledge any negativity in themselves or others. It can be the person who is constantly quoting spiritual teachers and texts, but who is unable to have a real, authentic human connection. It can be the person who uses meditation to numb their feelings, or who uses the law of attraction to avoid taking responsibility for their life.

Some common examples of spiritual bypassing include:

  • “Everything happens for a reason.”
  • “It’s all an illusion.”
  • “Just be positive.”
  • “Your vibes are off.”
  • “I’m not attached.”

These phrases, while they may contain a kernel of truth, are often used to dismiss or invalidate real human emotions and experiences. They are a way of avoiding the messy, uncomfortable, and often painful work of being human.

The Dangers of Spiritual Bypassing

Spiritual bypassing is not harmless. It can lead to a host of problems, including:

  • Emotional suppression: When we bypass our emotions, they don’t go away. They get stored in the body and can lead to anxiety, depression, and physical illness.
  • Lack of empathy: When we are disconnected from our own emotions, we are unable to connect with the emotions of others. This can lead to a lack of compassion and a sense of superiority.
  • Spiritual narcissism: Spiritual bypassing can lead to an inflated sense of self, a belief that one is more enlightened or evolved than others.
  • Inability to deal with reality: When we are constantly bypassing the challenges of life, we lose our ability to cope with them. We become fragile and easily overwhelmed.

A Real-Life Example: The Yoga Teacher Who Couldn’t Handle Conflict

I once knew a yoga teacher who was the epitome of spiritual bypassing. She was always calm, always smiling, always speaking in a soft, gentle voice. She had a huge following of students who adored her. But behind the scenes, she was a mess. She was in a toxic relationship that she was unable to leave. She had a difficult relationship with her parents that she refused to address. And she was terrified of conflict. Whenever a student would challenge her or disagree with her, she would shut down. She would say, “Let’s just all be love and light,” and then she would change the subject. She was using her spiritual persona to avoid dealing with the real, messy, and often painful issues in her life.

The Antidote to Spiritual Bypassing

The antidote to spiritual bypassing is to get real. It’s to be willing to be fully human, to feel all of your emotions, and to do the real work of healing. This means:

  • Feeling your feelings: Don’t be afraid of your anger, your sadness, your fear. They are all valid and they all have something to teach you.
  • Doing your shadow work: We all have a shadow side, the parts of ourselves that we have disowned or repressed. The spiritual path is not about getting rid of the shadow, it’s about integrating it.
  • Getting grounded: Spend time in nature. Connect with your body. Do the dishes. Pay your bills. The spiritual path is not about escaping from the world, it’s about being fully in it.

The spiritual path is not a bypass. It’s a deep dive. It’s a journey into the heart of what it means to be human. It’s messy, it’s uncomfortable, and it’s the most rewarding journey you will ever take.

How to Embody This Teaching

How to Embody This Teaching

Embodying this teaching means committing to a path of radical honesty and self-awareness. Here are some practices to help you avoid the trap of spiritual bypassing:

  • Feel, Don’t Fix: The next time a difficult emotion arises, resist the urge to immediately fix it, change it, or make it go away. Instead, simply allow yourself to feel it. Notice where it shows up in your body. Breathe into it. Give it space to be.
  • Embrace the Shadow: Take some time to journal about the parts of yourself that you judge or dislike. What are the qualities you’ve disowned? How might these qualities be serving you in some way? How can you begin to integrate them in a healthy way?
  • Grounding Practices: Make a conscious effort to connect with your physical body and the earth every day. Walk barefoot on the grass. Eat a nourishing meal and really taste your food. Do some gentle stretching or yoga. These simple practices can help you stay present and embodied.

When the Spiritual Bypass card appears in a reading, it is a powerful wake-up call. It is a sign that you may be using spiritual ideas or practices to avoid dealing with your real-life issues. This card is asking you to take an honest look at yourself and to see where you might be hiding from your own humanity. It is an invitation to get real, to get grounded, and to do the deep, life-changing work of healing. This is not a judgment. It is a loving and compassionate call to come back home to yourself.

Journaling Prompts

1

In what ways have I used spirituality to avoid my feelings or difficult situations?

2

What is one 'unspiritual' feeling (like anger, jealousy, or fear) that I can allow myself to feel today?

3

What is one practical, grounded action I can take to deal with a challenge in my life, instead of just meditating or praying on it?
