The wild river in the scene of your being
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I am the loving awareness that welcomes all emotions and is defined by none."
Here's the thing about emotions that nobody really talks about: they're both completely real and completely temporary. Wild, right? I've sat with thousands of people over the years, and the same pattern shows up again and again. We either try to push our feelings away or we become completely identified with them. Both approaches cause suffering.
Look, I get it. When you're in the middle of grief, anger, or fear, it feels like that emotion IS you. The Tao Te Ching talks about emotions like weather patterns... they arise, they peak, they pass. But here's what's interesting: just like you're not the storm that passes through your town, you're not the emotional storm that passes through your consciousness. You're the sky that holds it all.
Advaita Vedanta teaches something beautiful about this. There's the witness... the part of you that observes your emotions without being swept away by them. Think about that. Right now, even as you read this, there's a part of you that can step back and notice what you're feeling. That witnessing awareness? That's your true nature. The emotions are like waves on the ocean of your being.
But here's where it gets tricky. Spiritual bypassing is real, and I've seen it happen too many times. People think being spiritual means never feeling angry or sad or scared. Honestly? That's not awakening, that's numbing. True emotional healing happens when you can feel everything fully while knowing that you are the space in which all feelings arise and dissolve.
I remember working with a woman who'd spent years meditating to get rid of her anxiety. The anxiety kept coming back stronger because she was fighting it. The moment she started welcoming her anxiety, sitting with it, even thanking it for trying to protect her... that's when real transformation began. Are you with me?
Truth is, emotions are information. They're not good or bad, they're just energy in motion. Anger might be showing you where your boundaries need strengthening. Sadness might be honoring a loss. Fear might be pointing to what matters most to you. But when we label emotions as negative and try to spiritualize them away, we miss their medicine.
The practice isn't to become emotionless. The practice is to become emotionally free. Free to feel without being controlled by the feeling. Free to respond rather than react. Free to honor the emotion without becoming its prisoner.
Here's what I've learned in 30 years of this work: the emotions you resist persist, and the emotions you embrace transform. Not because you're trying to change them, but because you're creating the space for them to move through you naturally. Seriously. It's like the difference between trying to stop a river and learning to work through it.
Know what I mean? When you stop making emotions wrong, they lose their power over you. When you stop trying to be somewhere else emotionally than where you are, you discover the peace that's always been present underneath the emotional weather.
Start with what you're feeling right now. Not what you think you should be feeling, not what you felt yesterday, but what's actually present in your body and heart in this moment. Place one hand on your chest, one on your belly. Breathe.
Now here's the key: instead of trying to change or fix the emotion, practice saying 'Hello' to it. Literally. 'Hello, sadness. Hello, anxiety. Hello, anger.' This isn't about liking the emotion, it's about stopping the war against it.
Next, ask the emotion what it needs you to know. Not what it wants you to do... what it needs you to know. Listen without judgment. Sometimes anger needs you to know your worth. Sometimes sadness needs you to know how much you've loved. Sometimes fear needs you to know what you value.
Throughout your day, practice the pause. When emotion rises, take three breaths before reacting. In that space between feeling and action, you find your power. You're not suppressing the emotion, you're choosing how to respond to it.
Before sleep, do an emotional inventory. What did you feel today? Can you thank each emotion for its message? This isn't about being grateful for suffering, it's about honoring the intelligence of your emotional system. Your feelings are trying to take care of you, even when they're uncomfortable.
When this card appears, you're being invited into a deeper relationship with your emotional life. Something you've been pushing away needs to be felt and honored. Or maybe you've been so identified with your emotions that you've forgotten you're the awareness that holds them all.
This isn't about becoming emotionally perfect or spiritually bypassing difficult feelings. It's about finding the balance between feeling fully and staying centered in your true nature. The card suggests that emotional healing is available right now, but it requires your willingness to meet what's present with compassion rather than resistance.
Look for where you might be making emotions wrong or trying to be somewhere other than where you are emotionally. The medicine is in the feeling, not in the avoiding. This card often appears when you're ready to stop running from your inner weather and start dancing with it instead.
Trust that you have the capacity to hold whatever you're feeling. You always have. The emotions are passing through you, not defining you. Right now, you're being called to remember that you are both beautifully human in your feeling and eternally free in your essence.
What emotion have I been avoiding, and what might it be trying to teach me?
How do I typically relate to difficult feelings, and what would it look like to welcome them instead?
When I imagine being the sky that holds all emotional weather, what shifts in my body and heart?
