Joy

Happiness depends on what happens; joy depends on who you are.

The Teaching

Here's the thing about joy. It's not happiness on steroids. It's not the result of getting what you want or achieving some goal. Joy is what's left when you stop pushing so hard against life. Know what I mean?

I remember this moment years ago when I was rushing to catch a train, stressed about being late, when I noticed this kid maybe four years old just standing in a puddle, completely absorbed in watching the ripples spread out from his feet. Pure fascination. Pure presence. Pure joy. And I realized I'd been running past puddles my whole life.

That's what we do, right? We think joy is somewhere else, something we need to earn or find or create. Truth is, joy is your natural state. It's what the ancient texts call ananda, this unconditional bliss that doesn't need a reason. It just is.

The Taoists got this. They talked about wu wei, this effortless action that flows when you're not forcing things. Joy lives in that same space. It's not manufactured. It's discovered. Like finding a twenty in your old jacket pocket, except it was always there.

Look, I've worked with thousands of people over thirty years, and you know what I've noticed? The ones who radiate real joy aren't necessarily the ones with perfect lives. They're the ones who've learned to be present with what is. They've stopped waiting for permission to feel good.

But here's what's interesting. We're taught that emotions need triggers, right? You're happy because something good happened. You're sad because something bad happened. Joy breaks that rule completely. Joy can show up while you're washing dishes or stuck in traffic or having the most ordinary Tuesday of your life.

Think about that. Powerful, actually.

I've seen people light up talking about their morning coffee ritual, or the way sunlight hits their kitchen counter, or how their dog greets them at the door. Simple stuff. Nothing Instagram-worthy. Just life being life, and them being present enough to catch it.

Honestly, joy is rebellion. In a world that profits from your dissatisfaction, choosing joy is radical. It's saying 'I don't need your external validation or perfect circumstances to feel alive.' Are you with me?

The practice isn't about staying joyful all the time. That's spiritual bypassing. Feel what you feel. But know that underneath all the waves of emotion, joy is there. Like the ocean floor beneath the storms. Constant. Available. Yours.

And gratitude? That's just joy looking backwards. When you're truly present, gratitude becomes this natural appreciation for what's right here. Not forced thankfulness for things you think you should appreciate, but genuine awe at the simple fact that anything exists at all.

Wild, right? You're breathing. Your heart's beating. Thoughts are thinking themselves. Consciousness is experiencing itself through your eyes. That's not normal. That's miraculous. Joy is just paying attention to the miracle that's already happening.

How to Embody This Teaching

Want to practice joy? Start stupid simple. Right now, as you're reading this, notice three things you can sense. Maybe it's the feeling of whatever you're sitting on. The sound of air moving through your nose. The weight of your phone or this book in your hands.

That's it. Just notice. Don't make it deep. Don't analyze. Just... oh, there's that. And there's that. And there's that too.

Joy lives in the noticing. In the gaps between thoughts when you're just here, experiencing life directly instead of thinking about experiencing life.

Try this throughout your day. When you're waiting in line, instead of checking your phone, check in with your senses. When you're walking, feel your feet connecting with the ground. When you're eating, actually taste your food. Seriously.

And here's something I learned from my own practice: celebrate tiny victories. Caught yourself being present for thirty seconds? Celebrate that. Noticed you were getting stressed and took a breath? Party time. Found yourself spontaneously appreciating something ordinary? Joy points.

The goal isn't permanent bliss. That's not realistic or even healthy. The goal is remembering that joy is always available, always bubbling up from the source of what you are. You don't have to dig for it. You just have to stop covering it up with your endless mental commentary about how things should be different.

When This Card Appears

When Joy shows up in your reading, it's not telling you to be happy. It's reminding you that happiness is your birthright. This card appears when you've been working too hard at life, when you've forgotten that ease and delight are natural states, not achievements.

Maybe you've been postponing joy until you get your life together, until you reach some goal, until circumstances align perfectly. Joy is saying: stop waiting. The permission you're looking for? You already have it. The worthiness you're trying to prove? Already established.

This card often comes when you need to remember simple pleasures. Not grand gestures or peak experiences, but the small delights that are available right now. Your morning ritual. A text from someone you love. The way light changes throughout the day.

Joy is also about presence. If you've been living in your head lately, caught up in stories about the past or anxiety about the future, this card is calling you home to now. Because joy only exists in present time. It can't live in your memories or your projections.

Sometimes Joy appears as gentle permission to stop being so serious about everything. To remember that life includes play, spontaneity, wonder. To trust that you don't have to figure it all out to feel good right now.
