The sacred myths we live by.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I am the conscious author of my life story, writing each chapter with intention and wisdom."
Look, here's what I've learned after sitting with thousands of people over three decades: we're all living inside stories we didn't even realize we were telling ourselves. Every single one of us. These aren't just casual thoughts floating around. They're the deep, foundational narratives that shape everything we experience. Know what I mean?
Joseph Campbell got it right when he mapped out the hero's journey. But here's the thing that most people miss: you don't have to wait for some external call to adventure. You ARE the adventure. You're the hero, the wise mentor, the challenge, and the treasure all rolled into one. Wild, right?
I've watched people transform their entire reality just by recognizing the story they were living and consciously choosing to write a different one. Seriously. This woman came to me convinced she was 'always the victim.' That was her story, her identity. But when we started looking at it together, she realized that narrative was something she inherited, not something that was actually true about who she is. The moment she saw that? Everything shifted.
Truth is, most of our stories come from way back. Childhood experiences, family patterns, cultural conditioning. We absorb these narratives like sponges when we're young, and then we spend decades unconsciously living them out. But here's what's interesting: once you become aware of the story you're telling, you gain the power to change it.
Think about the myths and fairy tales that moved you as a kid. There's wisdom buried in those old stories, archetypes that speak to something deep in our psyche. The wounded healer. The wise fool. The phoenix rising from ashes. These aren't just entertainment, they're roadmaps for transformation. They show us what's possible when we step into our own mythic power.
But honestly? The most powerful story you can tell is the one where you're not stuck in any single role. Where you get to be complex, many-sided, evolving. Where you're allowed to be the student and the teacher, the seeker and the found. Where you can mess up, learn, grow, and reinvent yourself as many times as you need to.
I've seen people rewrite stories about money, love, success, family, health, creativity. All of it. The key is understanding that these stories live in your body, not just your mind. They create neural pathways, emotional patterns, even physical responses. That's why changing them requires more than just positive thinking. You've got to feel your way into the new narrative, embody it, live it until it becomes as real as the old one was.
Here's something that always amazes me: when you start consciously authoring your story, the universe seems to conspire to support your new narrative. It's like reality itself is waiting for you to decide who you want to be. People show up, opportunities appear, resources become available. Not magic, exactly, but not coincidence either.
The thing about being your own author is that you get to choose which genre you're writing in. Comedy, adventure, romance, mystery, spiritual quest. You can even blend genres. Who says your life has to fit into one category? Maybe you're writing a mystical romantic comedy with elements of epic adventure. Why not?
And look, being the author doesn't mean you control every plot twist. Life happens. Unexpected challenges, losses, curveballs you never saw coming. But even in those moments, you still get to choose how your character responds. You get to decide what meaning to make of events, how they fit into your larger story arc, what kind of wisdom or strength your hero gains from the experience.
The most liberating thing I can tell you is this: there are no rules for your story except the ones you choose. You don't have to follow anyone else's template for success, happiness, or spiritual growth. You get to define what those words even mean for you. You're not bound by the stories your family told about who you are or what's possible. You're not limited by the cultural narratives about age, gender, background, or any other category people try to put you in.
Are you with me? You're writing your story right now, this very moment. Every choice, every thought, every word is a brushstroke in the masterpiece of your becoming. And the beautiful thing is, you can always start a new chapter. Today, if you want to.
Here's how to step into your role as author of your own story, and I mean really embody it, not just think about it intellectually.
Start by getting clear on what story you've been living. Honestly. Sit down and write out the narrative you've been telling yourself about your life, your relationships, your capabilities, your limitations. What themes keep showing up? What role have you been playing? Are you the martyr, the rebel, the perfectionist, the victim, the rescuer? Don't judge it, just notice it. This awareness is the first step to authoring something new.
Next, identify which stories actually serve you and which ones are ready to be retired. Some old narratives might have protected you once but now feel limiting. Thank them for their service, but let them know their contract is up. Then start experimenting with new possibilities. Who would you be if that limiting story wasn't true? How would you move through the world? What would become possible?
Practice telling yourself a new story daily. Not just affirmations, but rich, detailed narratives about who you're becoming. Use present tense: 'I am someone who...' Feel into this new identity. How does this version of you walk, speak, make decisions? What do they believe about themselves and life? Make it visceral, embodied.
Pay attention to the stories you tell others about yourself. When someone asks how you're doing or what's new, notice what narrative automatically comes out of your mouth. Start consciously choosing to share stories that align with who you're becoming rather than who you've been. This isn't about lying or pretending. It's about emphasizing the parts of your experience that support your evolving identity.
Finally, look for evidence that your new story is already true. The universe is constantly giving us proof of whatever we're looking for. If you're writing yourself as someone who's creative, supported, capable of growth, start collecting examples of when that shows up. Keep a 'new story journal' and document every moment, however small, when you catch yourself being this evolved version of yourself.
When this card appears in your reading, it's a clear signal that you're being called to step into your power as the conscious author of your life story. The universe is highlighting that whatever narrative you've been living, whether it serves you or not, is something you have the ability to rewrite.
This isn't about denying your past or pretending difficult experiences didn't happen. It's about recognizing that you get to choose what those experiences mean and how they fit into your larger narrative. Maybe that challenging period becomes the catalyst that led to your greatest growth. Maybe those mistakes become the wisdom you needed to guide others. You're the one who decides.
The appearance of this card often means you're at a key point where an old story is ready to be completed and a new one is waiting to begin. Trust is, you might already be feeling the tension between who you've been and who you're becoming. That discomfort is actually a sign that transformation is happening. Don't resist it.
This card is also reminding you that you're not a passive character in your life's story. You're not just waiting for things to happen to you or for someone else to change your circumstances. You have agency, creative power, the ability to make choices that shift your entire trajectory. Right now, today, you can decide to write a different kind of chapter.
If you've been feeling stuck or like your life lacks meaning, this card is especially significant. It's telling you that meaning doesn't just happen to you, you create it through the stories you tell about your experiences. Your life can become as meaningful and rich as you choose to make it through conscious authorship of your own narrative.
