The exhausting masquerade of being someone you are not.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I choose truth over performance, authenticity over approval.""
Honestly, we're all performers. Think about that. From the moment we wake up, we're slipping into roles, adjusting our energy, putting on the face we think the world wants to see. But here's the thing: pretending is exhausting. And it's killing our souls, slowly but surely.
I've been reading people for three decades, and you know what I see more than anything? The gap between who someone really is and who they're trying to be. It's heartbreaking. And liberating. Because once you see it, you can't unsee it. Know what I mean?
The Tao Te Ching talks about the uncarved block, this state of pure potential before we start shaping ourselves to fit other people's expectations. That's what we're returning to when we stop pretending. Not some perfect version of ourselves, but the raw, unfiltered truth of who we are right now. Messy bits and all.
Anandamayi Ma, this incredible saint, used to say that all our problems come from forgetting our true nature. We think we need to become someone else to be worthy of love. But that's backwards. Love doesn't want perfection. Love wants truth. And truth is messy and beautiful and vulnerable and real.
Look, I get why we pretend. The world can be harsh. People judge. We learn early that certain parts of ourselves aren't acceptable. So we bury them. We create these elaborate personas, these protective shells. But here's what's interesting: the very thing we're trying to protect ends up suffocating.
In Advaita Vedanta, there's this understanding that the self we think we are is just a collection of identities we've picked up along the way. Daughter, son, student, professional, rebel, good person, bad person. All costumes. The real you exists before and beyond all that. But you can only find it when you stop trying to be someone else.
I remember working with this client who spent years trying to be the perfect daughter, the perfect wife, the perfect mother. She was so good at it that even she believed the performance. But underneath, she was dying. When she finally let herself feel angry, messy, imperfect, it was like watching someone come back to life. Wild, right?
The courage to stop pretending isn't about becoming someone new. It's about remembering who you've always been. That little kid who laughed too loud, who asked too many questions, who felt everything so deeply it hurt. That's still you. That's always been you.
But here's the scary part: when you stop pretending, you have to trust that you're enough. Just as you are. With your weird laugh and your strange thoughts and your tender heart. You have to believe that authenticity is more valuable than approval. And honestly? Most of us weren't taught that.
Truth is, pretending is a form of violence against yourself. Every time you swallow your words, hide your feelings, or shape-shift to make others comfortable, you're saying your real self isn't worthy of existing. Seriously. Think about that.
The spiritual path isn't about becoming perfect. It's about becoming real. And real is vulnerable. Real is uncertain. Real doesn't have all the answers. But real is alive. Real can love and be loved. Real can create and connect and transform. Pretending can't do any of that.
Are you with me? When you drop the masks, you give others permission to do the same. Your authenticity becomes a gift. Not just to yourself, but to everyone around you. Because we're all tired of pretending. We're all hungry for something real.
Here's how you start living this: Begin with small moments of truth. When someone asks how you're doing, try answering honestly instead of automatically saying 'fine.' Feel what happens in your body when you speak your real truth. Notice the fear, but speak anyway.
Create what I call 'authenticity check-ins' throughout your day. Stop and ask yourself: 'Am I being real right now, or am I performing?' No judgment, just awareness. Sometimes pretending is necessary, but make it a conscious choice, not an automatic response.
Practice vulnerable conversations with people you trust. Share something you usually keep hidden. Start small if you need to. The goal isn't to trauma-dump on everyone, but to slowly expand your comfort zone with being seen.
Notice when you're shape-shifting to please others. What do you do differently around your family versus your friends? Your boss versus your partner? Where do you lose yourself trying to be what others want? This awareness is the first step toward integration.
Try this exercise: Spend one day speaking only when you have something authentic to say. Skip the small talk if it doesn't feel real. See what emerges when you're not filling space with performance. It's uncomfortable at first, but incredibly freeing.
When this card appears, you're being called to examine where you're hiding behind masks. Look, I know it's scary. But something in your life is asking for more authenticity, more truth, more of the real you. Maybe you're exhausted from trying to be perfect. Maybe you're suffocating in a role that doesn't fit anymore.
This isn't about dramatically overhauling your entire life overnight. It's about small acts of courage. Speaking up when you usually stay quiet. Showing emotion when you usually hide it. Being imperfect when you usually perform perfection. The universe is supporting you in this return to realness.
Pay attention to where you feel most like yourself and where you feel most fake. There's wisdom in that contrast. You're being guided toward spaces and relationships that can hold your full truth. Trust that the people meant to be in your life will love you more for your authenticity, not less.
If this card appears, know that pretending is no longer serving you. It might have protected you once, but now it's limiting you. The cost of keeping up the performance is becoming higher than the risk of being real. That's your soul saying it's time to come home to yourself.
Where in my life am I performing instead of being real?
What am I afraid will happen if I stop pretending?
Who in my life loves me for who I really am, and how can I be more authentic with them?
